New employee is a fake, where to go from here?

It's a large organisation and I just had to send off her paperwork, passport, things like that

She was given the job after her second interview last week.

However, she has emailed me these documents (fine), and her birth certificate says born in September 2002?

That makes her 19?

This is a problem because, for example, her CV says she was an Executive Assistant to a Director in 2018? When she would've been in school?!

I've asked HR, who haven't replied properly, I've asked them to call. But someone replied to my email of concern with 'so you don't want this new me ever of staff? Why not?'

What can actually be done about this?

I don't think it's completely unlikely. I was an Estate Agent at 15, by 16 I was assistant to the MD, then I also had a weekend job as a Events Manager. Went off to uni where I started as a factory assistant ended up getting promoted to Social Media and Coding Manager by age 20.

Although if you have no photographic ID of her, may be worth checking that. And maybe double check the references?

Ok, but were you born in 2002? Because for that generation, it would not have been possible to be working more than a few hours a week at age 15.

Just to pikc up on the GCSEs.

ds is born in december 2002 and his GCSEs are grade 1-9, not A-E.
But I cannot remember if he was the first or second year to have this.
If he was the first, then she could have been born jan-Aug 2002 and have A-E grades.

It all sounds like a carefully constructed fake.

DS born in March 02 and he also got grades 1-9 at GCSE. Also he had to be in education or apprenticeship until 19...

Sounds like an NHS new recruit. Their HR department couldn't give a toss and are absolute crap at following things up. And yes, before you all go mad clapping and banging your saucepans, I have done my time in that less than worthy organisation.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/04/2022 19:22

"As an aside, where are these companies that hire people on £40k jobs with only GCSE requirements?

I am currently looking for work and the majority of jobs over about £25k are demanding degree level qualifications."

I'm presuming it's in London, although even in Wales you could be earning over 25k in an admin job where there are pay increments like the civil service and universities if you have experience. Many of those people will be graduates, but that's incidental to the jobs they do.

Has she accidentally emailed her daughters birth certificate?
As my eldest daughter emailed her new employers with mine....haha

Gwenhwyfar · 29/04/2022 19:31

"I thought by law you had to check right to work in the UK and see some ID such as passport and driving licence. "

Plenty of people don't have a passport or driving licence.

Just a thought ...she could be telling the truth. I mean if it's a lie it's outrageous. Usually if you tell a lie you'd make it believable. She could be really advanced for her age and may have worked in a family business or started her own. Ask questions and match them with what she said at interview.

She didn't claim to have worked in a family business, she claimed to have worked in a big national business which has now conveniently gone bust.

Xenia · 29/04/2022 19:49

There is certainly quite a bit of checking employers must do eg www.gov.uk/check-job-applicant-right-to-work

Booboobagins · 29/04/2022 19:52

Hi OP, a few things strike me

  1. HR is not tge hurting manager, you are(?) so your decision as to what time do not theirs
  2. You have not started her yet and most certainly discrepancies in CVs can be a reason to withdraw an offer
  3. Do yiu think she git her age wrong by a decade? Poor obvs but she's clearly nit 18.

I would tell her there are discrepancies in her CV so you are holding up the offer progressing to give her time to provide appropriate evidence of ID, age, qualifications and a formal reference from an ex-employer.

The ball is then in her court - see what happens.

I would def not start her with these big issues..

BTW lying on a CV is fraud. Police won't do anything and company probably won't, but she will have access to co credit cards etc in her role(?) and its too big a risk to take to proceed.

Tell HR tgats what you want to do and get their advise on hiw best to handle it.

She sounds fake to me btw....

I used to work in payroll/HR we had to check documentation of new joiners. Check GOV.UK, HMRC. There are links to check ID, right to work etc

Booboobagins · 29/04/2022 19:55

*hiring not hurting!

Apologies for other typos - dyslexia....

TheHatinaCat · 29/04/2022 19:57

Clearly some people have not realised that this 'girl' has withdrawn her application.

medforus · 29/04/2022 19:58

Common but not frequently excessive issue.

Soulsal · 29/04/2022 19:59

Write to her and say there seems to be a discrepancy and can she clarify.

🤔If you go on "see all" you can just read the OP's posts. Would have saved you writing this

" two companies that have gone under" ok 1, but 2? Seems fishy.

Mikey87 · 29/04/2022 20:06

You've done your part, she could well be legitimate, let hr do theirs. I would love if she was legitimate and she was able to see what you have posted here. She managed to pass 2 interviews surely she is qualified for the position?

If you are so worried confront her about your concerns.

Rewis · 29/04/2022 20:07

On one thread there isa debate is 12yo can be home alone for a few hours in the evening. And then on this one its totally normal for 13yo to be executive assistants at a Microsoft level company. Very baffling forum 😅

Is it possible at the age of 13 she was a junior assistant at say a salon on a Saturday?

winterchills · 29/04/2022 20:22

Sounds very dodgy!

PegasusReturns · 29/04/2022 20:41

Interesting she withdrew I guess you’ll never know now.

Laughing at the idea that EA is an easy job - Ive found it harder to recruit a good EA than professionally qualified staff. A good one is worth their weight in gold!

No, the job she says she had when she would have been 13 was as an executive assistant at a household name, large company, since defunct.

Hmm1234 · 29/04/2022 20:59

Contact her by phone and ask. It may be an honest mistake.
