New employee is a fake, where to go from here?

It's a large organisation and I just had to send off her paperwork, passport, things like that

She was given the job after her second interview last week.

However, she has emailed me these documents (fine), and her birth certificate says born in September 2002?

That makes her 19?

This is a problem because, for example, her CV says she was an Executive Assistant to a Director in 2018? When she would've been in school?!

I've asked HR, who haven't replied properly, I've asked them to call. But someone replied to my email of concern with 'so you don't want this new me ever of staff? Why not?'

What can actually be done about this?

I was involved in research for a TU precisely on this issue

It is a misconception that random employee drug testing is common place in certain industries. It is actually very uncommon in this country

Some of the posts on this thread are truly staggering. What sort of places do you people work? Are you hiring? Because I've been Prime Minister to the Queen of Sheba since I was six and I reckon my skills would be perfect for you. You won't be able to contact her directly because I'm in witness protection, but if you contact this random email account the person on the end will totally vouch for me.

The birth certificate and the CV cannot both be true. One of them is wrong. It doesn't matter which - it's fraud.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/04/2022 09:12

I visit industrial sites for work (no I'm not going to name them, but it's oil/gas, engineering, manufacturing, transport, utilities type sectors) and usually have to go through contractor induction.

I'd say at least a quarter of them ask you to confirm not being under the influence of alcohol or drugs while on site and cite a random drugs/alcohol testing policy that you agree to undergo testing if selected.

OP isn't much better posting details from her work about an applicant on a public forum and inviting people to comment and gossip.

I wonder if male applicants are scrutinized this hard?

This was for an EA position which is a fairly easy job anyway and you're acting like you were hiring a surgeon or airline pilot.

A male applicant, aged 19, who claimed to have a junior assistant job at a famous large firm six years ago? Yes, I do believe he would have been scrutinised too..

Honestly, there's quite enough genuine sex discrimination in the world of work to worry about; there's no need to invent any more.

If EA is such an easy job, why does it pay so much?

I suspect that it usually isn't that easy, and the best paying jobs include quite a lot of 'technical' work and also being at the beck and call of a boss who is hard to please and expects you to attend to their every whim and make the impossible happen.

Since you were six??

Pah, late starter - what on earth were you doing lounging around before then?

I am going to hazard a guess
this wasn’t in the last 10-15 years was it?

SoupDragon · 29/04/2022 09:48

There is a big difference between having a drug testing policy and drug testing.

Ever worked as an EA, have you?

It makes me laugh the number of people who ASSUME it's an easy job.

Being a proper EA is a very hard and complex job requiring skill, initiative and the sort of understanding that takes a

CrowUpNorth · 29/04/2022 10:03

Good while to learn. Not every post called an EA is actually a full EA role.

eggandchicken · 29/04/2022 10:41

I can name a few Radom drug and alcohol testing companies such as courier companies, HGV companies, Oil and Gas and Offshore Companies. public transport too.

Xenia · 29/04/2022 10:45

My son delivers food (full time PAYE) for leading company. They presumably have loads of drivers. I imagine all the other food delivery companies also have similar tests. I don't think drug testing is particularly rare in the UK.

PenelopeLively · 29/04/2022 10:59

@RantyAunty yes any job aside from surgeon is easy.

Isahlo · 29/04/2022 18:33

No word of a lie, I submitted my little sisters birth certificate by accident when I got my first after uni job. Everyone’s important docs lived in a box in my mum and dads spare room, we have the same initials and I just thought mine would be on the top like always because they’re in date order.
they weren’t
I was daft.

Vynalbob · 29/04/2022 18:34

A junior assistant isn't ridiculous at 15. People have Saturday jobs. You've marked your concern, I think more than that would come across as petty, if the refs came back okay and there's no actual proof (other than a hunch) then let it go.....
you can say I told you so later if it turns out you were right.

Look at her passport. What birth date is given? If there is a discrepancy between that date and her birth certificate MAKE HR deal with it. Phone them if you must.

You've not the OP's post. The fraudster resigned, seemingly when she realised they were on to her.

AlistairCamel · 29/04/2022 18:59

How interesting that she’s withdrawn. I wonder if she saw this thread.

i was going to say that I worked with someone in an unrelated role who basically became a freelance journalist at 13. She sold in loads of articles to music publications, didn’t tell them her age - she just did it. They then started asking her to go along to interview bands. She spent quite a while post school working doing other things until she pursued her passion. She’s now on national radio.

liorawordsmith · 29/04/2022 18:59

Just a thought ...she could be telling the truth. I mean if it's a lie it's outrageous. Usually if you tell a lie you'd make it believable. She could be really advanced for her age and may have worked in a family business or started her own. Ask questions and match them with what she said at interview.
