New employee is a fake, where to go from here?

It's a large organisation and I just had to send off her paperwork, passport, things like that

She was given the job after her second interview last week.

However, she has emailed me these documents (fine), and her birth certificate says born in September 2002?

That makes her 19?

This is a problem because, for example, her CV says she was an Executive Assistant to a Director in 2018? When she would've been in school?!

I've asked HR, who haven't replied properly, I've asked them to call. But someone replied to my email of concern with 'so you don't want this new me ever of staff? Why not?'

What can actually be done about this?

That's bollocks. The age shows that she has lied - if your HR can't recognise CV fraud when they see it, they're not very bright.

I have been advised to not ask her anything else until I speak to someone more senior as it could be again seen as discrimination and I don't have the option to withdraw the offer yet

I have asked to speak to someone more senior. They're in later this afternoon but unsure when. They're going to call. If they don't then I will call again.

Is your HR department run by monkeys? There's a very high possibility that this woman is fraudulent.

You're her prospective line manager. Surely it's not to late to do something about this! I would go back to HR with specific examples of the inconsistencies. You have a right to question this. A CV cannot contain lies.

Have you told them that her work history on her CV shows that she was an executive assistant at the age of 13?

Honestly, no wonder I encounter so many terrible people at interview. I often wonder how they got their previous jobs. Now I’m starting to see.

People embellish their CVs ALL THE TIME in order to secure an interview. It sounds like that’s what has happened, and at interview it was decided she was suitable for the job. So the problem is…?

This isn't a slight embellishment. It sounds like the whole CV is faked.

Fraud. It's a criminal offence.

Inventing a job history, writing a false reference from a self-created email address... It's sociopathic behaviour really.

Whatever is going on, she sounds like good talent. She’s either exceptional for 29 or great for a 20-something.

What is it you are afraid of if she has the job?

Do you have a legal department? They can advise HR that they are talking out of their fundament. You’d be rejecting her if she was 19 or 39 or 59, because She is lying to you.

So is the person you spoke to in HR quote junior and the senior person they refer to is also on HR? I would be emphasising to them you have concerns about the ID as they will know that there are possible criminal offences and the company would be in trouble. That would get them moving, although I would put it in writing so it doesn't all come back on you later.

I think her ‘gift of the gab’ just took you by surprise/blinded you.

Actually most scammers have the gift of the gab. That’s how they are scammers.

There could be serious implications if you hire a fraudster (I posted this link already but I recommend reading it) Employment fraud especially if she has access to sensitive information, it could really damage the reputation of the business.

HR have really failed here by not noticing the date discrepancy but I’m not surprised going on experience. I think your business need to bring in mandatory counter-fraud training.

You need to conduct further checks no matter how amazing she was at interview. If she’s faked a reference that’s an offence under the Fraud Act 2006 and I don’t mean to scare you but aiding a fraudster (even unwittingly) can come with a penalty.
