My 1 year old is quite big and the size 8 ones are getting a bit snug! Can you even get a bigger size ??? Not sure what to do ?

Op what age / size are your other kids?

Archillesheel · 26/04/2022 22:53

My 3 yo was in size 8 and then we switched on to pampers size 6 nappy pants which I think that's even a bit loose for dc who is 16kg.

Out of interest, why does she not have snacks? I am just wondering if she is eating more at each meal than she needs because of the long gaps between food?

I think your portion sizes sound absolutely fine though. My son can eat two slices of bread in a sitting if he's having a growth spurt.

Hopefully not a criticism! If I could get my son to stop begging me for food every 5 minutes (and then barely touching it) I would do 3 meals a day also. But as it happens we kept up the routine from weaning and he has 3 meals and 2 snacks. He's on track on his 25th centile at 2.

I used to always offer a little mid morning and mid afternoon snack and she never ever touched it. Played with it and threw it around or ignored it so after a few months I gave up !!
I always make sure that each day her water is out and she can have a drink whenever she likes and I do ask her if she would like snacks but she shakes her head !

That comparison would only be relevant if DD wasn’t also having breakfast. But as she is having breakfast, including sometimes a third slice of bread, it isn’t. Your DD is having breakfast and 2 slices of bread for lunch. Some DC have 1 slice of toast with breakfast and a sandwich made with 1 slice of bread with lunch.

I agree. If I had a sandwich it would be with 2 slices of bread and I would find that filling!

I'm glad you have spoken to HV OP. I hope you get some answers or reassurance all is OK regardless of her size.

I guess it's no good comparing what children eat and how big they are as it's all variable. But for what it's worth my DC is a similar age and if they ate 1 whole slice of bread a day. Be it toast or a sandwich, that would be good going for them! And they are not small either. 75th centile. And in size 5 nappies. I tried 5+ which leaked.
Could the nappy issue be they are too big rather than too small?

goldsparklyChocolate · 28/04/2022 10:25

HV was really nice and helpful , she’s going to get us a dietician appt but said looking at the food diary and portion sizes (I took photos the last couple days and took dd actual bowl and plate so she can see the size!) that it’s not too much food and like I thought balances out over the day with smaller breakfast and dinner and a bigger lunch.

she did say that under 2 milk is still needed and she is a bit concerned we aren’t getting enough dairy in. One thing she said was if we could introduce milk it may seem like a backwards step but actually is a more concentrated source of nutrients and might be better as then could maybe look at ways to get more nutrition and less calories if the dietician agrees

she said not to worry now about the gp as the wait time for a paediatrician appt is months and it’s better to see the dietician first.
in the meantime I’m not to make any changes apart from trying to introduce a couple of servings of milk a day she said eg instead of porridge and full fat milk and berries try a cup of milk and some fruit or instead of fruit after dinner offer a cup of milk so going to try that.
she won’t touch cows milk the HV said if we want to try formula again it’s ok if it works and not to see it as a step back. But only to give 2 servings of 100 ml each time

I have to keep a food diary as well for a bit longer to show the dietician

Beees · 28/04/2022 10:31

Sounds like some progress but also not much practical help, hopefully the dietician appointment doesn't take too long to come through.

Did she weigh and measure her so you've now got a clear baseline?

goldsparklyChocolate · 28/04/2022 10:36

Couldn’t get height/length as dd wasn’t happy at all. Got weight and hv said dietician will take measurements anyway and not to worry

You could try a banana milkshake to see if DD will go for that.

I just blend a banana with 150ml of milk and a drop of vanilla.

If you make it thick enough the texture is more like a dessert than a glass of milk so you might get away with it.

I keep peeled bananas in the freezer and just blend one with 170ml kefir and that's very thick. I'd try half a banana with 100ml milk for a toddler.

goldsparklyChocolate · 28/04/2022 12:33

Yes I’ll try the banana milk she may like that

I'm really surprised the health visitor didn't suggest this as an option instead of giving her formula.

I'd also definitely try to measure her height at some point before the next appointment just incase she doesn't cooperate when you get to the dietician appointment.

goldsparklyChocolate · 28/04/2022 16:02

She just said to try milk and fruit and if she won’t have cows milk it’s ok to try formula if she will drink it

i don’t think I’ll have another appt I think I’m just meant to wait for the dietician appt now

OP posts:
goldsparklyChocolate · 28/04/2022 16:02

I’ll try to do it at home if she stays still long enough !

My ds (8 with additional needs) wears a size 7 or 8 pampers (depending what size is in stock) nappy pants for bed.

He’s really tall and weighs 4stone 5lb and has loads of room.

Dinoteeth · 01/05/2022 05:46

Good that the HV has referred to the dietician. Any idea how long the wait is?
I know you are saying she's said not to make changes other than adding in more diary I think I'd try to reduce some of the carbs. You don't want her to get any heavier.

Bitconfusedhmm · 06/05/2022 00:03

Hope your daughters ok @goldsparklyChocolate

Dinoteeth · 06/05/2022 00:42

How are you getting on?

Just a thought have you checked the weight on your car seat. Infants carriers have a top weight of 13kg, the bigger toddler seats are often 17kg.

goldsparklyChocolate · 27/05/2022 17:42

Just a little update we have seen the dietician twice now and done a food diary including weights so that exact portion sizes could be seen.
DD had some general bloods done which were all fine and we have been referred to see a paediatrician. The gp said they think she is fine just big and the dietician on seeing the food diary agrees as the amounts of food aren’t excessive. HV is going to weigh dd every 2-3 weeks till our appt comes through

Its great that you gathered the evidence, I've found dieticians often don't believe you or give you useless obvious advice. I was once told "a big potato has more calories than a small potato"!

I really hope they get to the bottom of it and are able to help your DD. Were you able to find better fitting nappies?

I’ve been using Huggies dry nites in age 3-5 they seem to be stretchier and stay up better for her

Can I just say @goldsparklyChocolate how reasonable, calm and polite you’ve been on this thread? Some posts from people have been verging on rude but you’ve handled them all with grace.

Our kids were all shapes and sizes and when they grew ‘out’ they normally had a period of rapid growing ‘up’! It was like they needed the extra width before they could stretch!

All of them have ended up tall and a healthy BMI but one of girls ended up with hormonal issues which we think was reflected in her size as a toddler.

Hope everything goes well with your little girl and you find the answers you’re looking for 💐

Happened on this thread and was thinking the same - you are so calm in the face of so much unnecessary shock and hand wringing.

Muminabun · 28/05/2022 13:45

Hi op I have read this thread with interest. I’d not want to worry you but my daughter is the same weight as yours and is 2.5 years old. She is seeing a paediatrician and has had genetic bloods done as she may have an overgrowth disorder. I think your HV was wrong to dissuade you from seeing a paediatrician as overgrowth can be a sign of a genetic disorder.
