Op if everyone else has a normal healthy BMI then that worries me even more that's something is wrong and it's not just over eating.

Is she walking, crawling?

Yes really active runs about all the time . She crawled and walked at average ages no issues with milestones.
She actually seems quite energetic. We go to the park each morning she doesn’t seem to be struggling due to weight she runs about and isn’t out for breath or sweaty or anything that would worry me

Honestly Op I'd accept every single investigation into whatever is wrong.

Running around means she should loose weight, it's not that uncommon for babies to drop weight as they start becoming more active.

Something really just doesn't sound right.

Any chance your scales are miscalibrated if digital?

OverCCCs · 10/06/2022 15:28

Or, and this is probably very unlikely, but could anyone in your household be sneaking her food without your knowledge? Not to be cruel, but just because they want to give the baby a treat?

I absolutely agree but I’m taking the advice from the gp and hospital now rather than HV as gp/paediatrician seem to be focusing on dd and supporting us whereas the HV (and apparently dietician) are just focusing on the food diary and wondering if it’s accurate.

I thought they would all be working together but I now seem to be in the middle of the very logical gp and hospital and the accusatory HV

No def not as I’m with her all the time. She’s been weighed at 2 different places as well as home so scales are all working as they should

The hv has measured height and weight, which are pretty much at the opposite ends of the centiles, so it’s nothing to do with the op’s scales

OverCCCs · 10/06/2022 17:22

I meant food scales. Maybe portions are accidentally larger than the scale shows so
LO is getting extra calories every day that over time have added up. Just throwing out one idea.

Honestly, I'd go for the admission so that they can see , with their own eyes, what the situation is.
If they agree with you then more testing needs to be done to find out why.

The gp and paediatrician don’t think it’s necessary and although the HV wants it to happen I don’t think it can on just her say ? She literally only wants to check what dd eats but she doesn’t work at the hospital.

Without it being recommended by gp or paediatrician I dont think I can just turn up.

Health visitors can complete most referrals. My son was referred to paediatrics, audiology, speech and language and occupational therapy by the HV all off the back of his 2 year check. A proactive HV when you have a child under 5 can be worth their weight in gold

I was trying to get hold of my usual HV today as she was actually lovely I’ve no idea why we suddenly have this new (aggressive) one but I want to stick with the original !

Ours is more of a hub type set up now, where you see one of a team (unless you specify a preference I assume). They seem to get a bad press on here but health visitors are qualified midwives or nurses who have then done additional training (12m full time) to qualify so most will come with their own area of expertise from their previous career, if not the ideal bedside manner!

Any further forward op?

goldsparklyChocolate · 20/06/2022 17:43

We have seen the paediatrician (added as an extra to the clinic as gp insisted it was urgent). Had some more tests done and everything is fine/normal.

We have been told to just carry on what we are doing and will remain under the obesity team for now, just so that we can have regular appts with the dietician and to be weighed etc.

The general opinion is that dd had probably put on weight too quickly when she was on anti reflux milk as was drinking extra to soothe her reflux but because of covid etc she wasn’t seen or weighed so nobody can pinpoint the rapid gain although looking at photos it’s does seem to make sense.
Paediatrician isn’t worried and said because there’s such a big gap we can’t see how quick centiles were jumped so we just need to keep an eye now and he thinks it will level off and drop.

The new HV had put a safeguarding referral in as she ‘suspected over feeding and disguised compliance’ but we had a call off a social worker who then spoke to the gp and paediatrician and there were no issues

we basically just have to carry on and keep getting dd weighed then review in 3 months

ThatPosterIsSoRight · 20/06/2022 18:22

That’s good news about the paediatrician’s conclusion.

But awful about the safeguarding referral. I understand they have to be overly cautious in reporting things, but that’s horrible for you personally.

Stath · 20/06/2022 21:37

That’s reassuring @goldsparklyChocolate although I don’t like the sound of what the SW said but hopefully they’ll listen to actual qualified medical professionals.

I was always told that weight management for young children was not to ‘lose’ weight but to keep it static so as the child grows they become more proportional in their centiles.

Please keep us updated but only if you feel like it!

Good news that it's not hormonal or anything medical.
Just need to work on her diet. And she is small enough not to know or notice.

Happy days. My friend went through similar, her baby loved her bottles and she ended up seeing paeds and so on. Eventually after lot of stress it did work itself out and she's a normal sized 6 year old now.

Yes we are going to be under the care of the obesity team a while I think. I feel like it will probably level off like he suggested. It’s hard to get an accurate picture as we have birth weight and 8 w weight then nothing for so long then recently and obviously there’s been a huge jump somewhere but with regular weighing now I’m just hoping it’s stays static / reduces

i think she was eating ok and certainly not too much and I’m so conscious she needs her vitamins etc so I’m trying to focus on activity which isn’t too hard as she loves to run about but also just making some subtle changes (eg I never give her dried fruit ,make porridge with half milk half water, I changed the oil I use for cooking foods for all of us. It’s very small changes but hopefully enough to make a difference)

Yip and follow their guidance. I'm glad you are getting somewhere. And really glad for your DDs sake you started the thread.

WhatNoRaisins · 22/06/2022 07:04

I'm glad you've got a plan now. I was told you should bottle feed on demand, this makes me question that advice to be honest.

o0maisie · 18/03/2025 12:42

My 6 month after old is in size 7 😅 help!! His perfectly normal and fine he just has super chunky legs. What do I do for nappies?

Deodora95 · 24/03/2025 21:15

Hi; sorry to jump on the post but I somehow ended up here and was wondering how things are now? If her weight did level out in the end?
