My 1 year old is quite big and the size 8 ones are getting a bit snug! Can you even get a bigger size ??? Not sure what to do ?

i was looking at pull ups but are they as absorbent ?

You're doing the right thing by speaking to the health visitor, in my experience if they have any concerns they can also make the necessary referrals so you may not even have the hassle of trying to get a unicorn poop GP appointment.

I guess its a good thing that she's larger overall rather than just having a large distended abdomen. Hopefully just a case of her being overweight for her height rather than anything untoward!

My DC was v heavy and v chunky up until about 13 months, then he walked and didn't put any weight on at all for 9 months, he just stretched and got taller and taller.

@goldsparklyChocolate I think you have held yourself so well and responded politely when people on here are coming across a little rude in some cases.

The fact you have listened to others and plan to contact the HV tomorrow to me shows you're very genuine and want the best for your dc.

I think everyone could join in and share a comment about the weight/ size of your dc compared to their own but I don't see this being helpful any more.

Op I hope your little one is all well and just a chunk!
I know 2 babys (not related) who were huge, none mobile at 10 months and at 5 years you wouldn't know as they are the same size as their friends. Not saying this is the case but wanted to share something from the opposite angle.

Thankyou for the kind replies and helpful advice

Her diet sounds very good and doesn't sound like huge portions for an active child. Very similar to my DD at that age, although I gave her less fruit (for the sake of her teeth as much as anything else - family of rubbish teeth).

I was constantly harangued by others about my DD being UNDERweight and wondering if I didn't feed her enough. Staff at nursery (and now school) have commented that DD eats really well compared to other children - she must just have a quick metabolism.

OP has clearly taken on board that it would be useful to get a professional opinion. I think the Health Visitor is a good place to start. They referred us to a dietician directly - it doesn't always have to go via the GP in the first instance.

Have to say though, I'd put money on your scales being incorrect OP! The weight they're reading for your DD is more than my DD at 5 years old.

Thismummyrunstheshow · 24/04/2022 22:59

Hi OP. I've tried to read all the comments but couldn't see, what nappies are you using ATM?
Over the years with both kids I often found nappy brands were very much trial and error until I found the right one but I do remember some coming up a lot smaller than others.
Pampers were always very generous in terms of size IMO but DC2 has been using Tescos and they have been just as good for us.
If you haven't tried already, shop around and try a few different brands.

I do feel like pull ups/nappy pants are not right for your DC yet, she's still so young and those nappies may not cut it for her with absorbency let alone poo explosions ☺️

Thismummyrunstheshow · 24/04/2022 23:01

If still no good, could you look into cloth nappies. So much range and a world of info now, they've really moved on from the olden day towel rags and pins.

Rinatinabina · 24/04/2022 23:03

DD is about that weight and i think 100cm at 2 and half. She’s in pampers 6’s and they are fine (got quite a chubby bottom as well). She uses toddler pull ups and they have a bit more room in them at the sides than the nappies.

Rinatinabina · 24/04/2022 23:06

If you have a dumbell or a bag of flour stick them on your scales to make sure they are working properly.

Dinoteeth · 25/04/2022 14:16

Op did you get in touch with HV?

I'm another who thinks 2 slices of bread for a baby is a lot. That's like an adult portion you'd get in a sandwich shop.

goldsparklyChocolate · 26/04/2022 14:23

Yes- have an appt later in the week for height and weight to be done and to discuss what she eats (I’m doing a food diary) and will go from there

OP posts:
goldsparklyChocolate · 26/04/2022 14:24

In regards to the sandwich though if you look at the whole days intake of food it’s not excessive at all , and she doesn’t have snacks or milk

kitcat15 · 26/04/2022 19:55

Your HV will likely direct you to First Steps Nutrition website....lots of information including portion sizes for most foods your baby will eat.

Dinoteeth · 26/04/2022 21:04

Remember to keep note of the portion sizes too.

Snacks or not two slices of bread is a lot for a baby. Its an adult portion as sold by lots of places.

But some babies have toast for breakfast and again some kind of bread or similar for lunch - looking at the overall daily intake she is not eating too much

I agree op, the amount of food you say she eats isn't a lot really, although an adult sandwich is debatable.

Im interested in what the HV thinks as there really is something amiss and it could be something underlying. She weighs more than my almost 4yo

goldsparklyChocolate · 26/04/2022 21:34

I’ve been looking back at photos and trying to see when the weight went on so fast as she was a tiny baby newborn

OP posts:
goldsparklyChocolate · 26/04/2022 21:45

We started weaning at 6.5 months, I do remember she still loved her formula and did always have more than was recommended on the box-by a lot sometimes but that was stopped at about 12.5 months so even if her weight was due to that (I think if I remember correctly the recommendation on box was 3x 8oz bottles in 24 hours ?? But she was having 4 bottles a day right up till 12 m then just a bedtime bottle till just over 12.5 m

it was thicker milk due to being anti reflux but she hasn’t had any for months now

OP posts:
Beees · 26/04/2022 21:52

I'm glad you have made an appointment, hopefully they can offer some advice.

Have you checked your scales and tried measuring her yourself so you have a rough idea of her measurements.

goldsparklyChocolate · 26/04/2022 22:11

Yes hopefully once we’ve seen the hv we can work out what’s going on as I really don’t think she eats too much.
im starting to think maybe she was over fed a bit when she was still having formula. I didn’t get her weighed for quite a few months due to covid and didn’t even really think about weight as was so busy and preoccupied and she was eating and having her milk etc but looking back at photos she did get bigger quick initially at 3 m when we changed her to anti reflux milk and she was able to keep it down and then after 6.5 months with starting weaning but she still had a lot of milk as well but then I wasn’t getting her weighed regularly at that point

OP posts:
AReallyUsefulEngine · 26/04/2022 22:12

That comparison would only be relevant if DD wasn’t also having breakfast. But as she is having breakfast, including sometimes a third slice of bread, it isn’t. Your DD is having breakfast and 2 slices of bread for lunch. Some DC have 1 slice of toast with breakfast and a sandwich made with 1 slice of bread with lunch.

goldsparklyChocolate · 26/04/2022 22:15

I really don’t think she’s eating too much. My older dc ate more as they had snacks And also drank cows milk whereas dd doesn’t.
i think I’ll just see what the hv says . I’ve written down everything a db exact portion sizes too so I can show her when I go and I’ll see what she advises as something isn’t working out but I really don’t think she’s eating too much or an amount that would explain her size

OP posts:
RubaiyatOfAnyone · 26/04/2022 22:21

In case it helps for comparison, OP, my dd2 is 2yrs 5mths old and weighs 2 stone 6, which puts her on the 95th centile and in 3-4 year old clothing (and size 5 pullups at night).

i (and the HVs) am not concerned because she always has been this big, from the day i had a csection at 38 weeks because she was already 9lbs 8. As long as she follows her line on the charts, she’s fine, she is just randomly in the top 5% size-wise. If she’d suddenly changed centile group, I’d probably want to get her checked out.

The thing is I don’t think I can pinpoint the time she jumped centipede as due to covid she hasn’t been weighed much at all . She wasn’t big at birth but is now really big but as she wasnt regularly weighed I’ve been looking back at photos to see when she got noticeably bigger. 3 m and around 7/8 m seem to be times of weight gain from photos and she def drank a lot of milk as loved it so much !

she will wear 2-3 or 3-4 clothes but the sleeves And legs are too long

Out of interest, why does she not have snacks? I am just wondering if she is eating more at each meal than she needs because of the long gaps between food?

I think your portion sizes sound absolutely fine though. My son can eat two slices of bread in a sitting if he's having a growth spurt.

Hopefully not a criticism! If I could get my son to stop begging me for food every 5 minutes (and then barely touching it) I would do 3 meals a day also. But as it happens we kept up the routine from weaning and he has 3 meals and 2 snacks. He's on track on his 25th centile at 2.
