I solved today's Redactle (#16) in 61 guesses with an accuracy of 73.77%. Played at www.redactle.com/

I am so pleased with this that I have started this thread 😀🤗

I thought I'd have a go at this yesterday and I was hopeless - gave up in the end. But today was much better. (Obviously I know nothing about the history of the Catholic Church!)

I solved today's Redactle (#18) in 59 guesses with an accuracy of 62.71%. Played at www.redactle.com/

Those solving really quickly, do you just put random words in and follow a trend like semantle? Or actually try to get rid of the redacted parts? I was doing the latter but suspect that's what took so long?

I don’t always get it that quickly but I do a mixture of:
Using words that are often in Wikipedia entries - century, war, time, first, last, known, earliest, latest etc, to get more of an idea of what kind of entry it is
Looking at any unusual syntax and the titles, which might give an idea of what kind of entry it is - a person, a thing, an event - or trying words like science, history, to narrow it down
Once I have that idea using words which are often used in that kind of entry - so if it is a person, married, son, daughter, he, she
I will often try countries - England, Spain, France seem popular
Then seeing if I can follow a theme, if anything jumps out at me - a country, a war, a time period.

Thank you @DoorLion that is so useful! I have been doing some of this, and will try the other tips on the next game!
One thing I have found is that centuries tend to be entered as 19th and not nineteenth. And seeing which century gets most hits can be useful too.

So for Chopin, Ffrom the layout, I thought it might be a person so I used words like born and died to confirm. What sort of a person? Decided to try for a musician so tried concert which gave several hits. Followed up with album, no hits. This suggested it wasn't someone modern so had to be classical. Tried a few central European country words to get a nationality but it didn't really help much. Flailed about for a bit with more music terms, then got a big hit on piano. Put in a few more random words, mostly music related. Then, when I only got two hits on violin, I actually thought about what I already had - composer, piano, got to be Chopin (googled first name though).

With college of cardinals, the format suggested a place or a thing. Ruled out battle (thought it might have been battle of somewhere). Place words like location didn't help so that left thing. Things normally have a history so tried that and then tried periods of history which gave hits like Rome/Roman (which sent me down an entirely wrong track!) and Middle Ages and Medieval. I eventually hit on some religious words and started following those which filled in a lot of gaps. In common with a lot of people I think, I made the error on not pluralising cardinal which added a lot of time. By the time I realised and tried cardinals, I was at the point that I had half an answer and also knew that it was a group that ran the Catholic church and elected the Pope called xxx of Cardinals. At this point I googled as I felt that I knew the answer, just not what it was called.

User12398712 · 25/04/2022 09:12

I should say, I solved Chopin pretty quickly, College of Cardinals took ages!

drspouse · 25/04/2022 09:14

I have done the last 4, I found out the format doesn't give you words like it, them, their, he, she so I put those in and that helps to see if it's a person or a thing!

Now I've done it twice (only successful once) I get it - I didn't realise it was one word that you were looking for, for some reason I thought it was supposed to be the title <doh>

Now I know that, I realise I could have got today's a lot quicker. Just glad to have got it though!

It is the title, it just so happened that todays title was 1 word.

todays was easiest so far.

That's a useful tactic, thanks, apart from anything else, it will reduce the gaps and make the sentences easier to make sense of.

Oh! Thank you @WowStarsWow

How confusing Grin

It is the title of the Wiki article that you’re looking for - so a couple of days ago it was Frederic Chopin.

The current one just happens to be a single word title.

SpiceRat · 25/04/2022 10:19

I had to Google yesterday’s but today’s I got pretty quickly. Only 2nd time so I was buzzing 😂

TheChurchOfEli · 25/04/2022 10:21

Well, now I feel thick after being happy I got today’s in 36 Sad

36 is a really good score though.

WowStarsWow · 25/04/2022 10:26

Other good words I’ve found are when, which, where, what.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 25/04/2022 10:41

The size of the blanks can also help (or hinder — I was convinced on the church one for a long time it was about royalty, Charles II etc rather than Pius II etc!).

MrsElm · 25/04/2022 10:41

Some great tips being shared!

I'm really looking forward to this afternoon's puzzle. I'm going to try on my laptop this time, as the constant moving around the phone screen to see what's what is beginning to annoy me!

Capital letters can also help. Capitalisation of Holy led me to Holy See (helpful) and Holy Roman Emperor (bit red herringy). DH had some really early time periods which led him to think he was probably looking at Europe and when he got City, he leapt immediately to Vatican.

TheAbbotOfUnreason · 25/04/2022 11:26

You may also get a few pointers from the references section.

And I’ve tried words like science, history, art, religion, music, born, he, she, his, her etc.

I have just stumbled across this thread and had a go! Should have got it much sooner but didn't really get what I was doing Grin

Mxflamingnoravera · 25/04/2022 13:36

I'm living redactle, three days in and today's was a joy to solve. So satisfying when it all appears because the title has been found (stumbled upon!).

Mxflamingnoravera · 25/04/2022 13:37

Loving not living, I do have other things in my life (eg mumsnet, wordle, cemantle, Globle) no time for work any more!
