Can I show off my Easter cake? And would anyone like to show me theirs?

19yo DS1 came home from uni wanting to learn how to do lots of different cake-making, icing and sugarcraft, so we've had a fun few weeks, culminating in this Easter cake which we made all the flowers for together Smile

It's a six-layer chocolate cake with whipped milk chocolate ganache filling, dark chocolate ganache coating, and piped sweetened chocolate whipped cream.

Anyone else made an Easter cake they want to post a pic of?

Um this whole OP has made me cry, the cake is beautiful, the fact you and your DS learned together and made it together is just so lovely. Seriously the cake looks bloody amazing I'd do petty crime for a slice of that Grin

Jk987 · 16/04/2022 19:56

It's gorgeous! Well done 👏🏻

Gynaesaur · 16/04/2022 19:56

Shouldn't have clicked on this while trying to diet. Grin

Op that is utterly beautiful. I made a chocolate fudge cake today and let my 5 yo twins decorate it with mini eggs and sprinkles. No way am I providing a picture 😂

👏

I have made some rather lovely hot cross buns, but my chocolate bundt cake stuck to the tin and fell to bits when I tried to turn it out :-(

Planning to botch it together, cover it in ganache and mini eggs and serve it in lumps with ice cream.

Cherrysherbet · 16/04/2022 20:02

Gorgeous! Happy Easter op 🐰

My bundt cake earlier in the week stuck like shit to a blanket as well, grr. No idea why. I ended up plastering it in ganache and glace cherries in the end...it tasted better than it looked Grin

Oh I love this thread. I am useless at baking, and have managed to make some ‘healthy banana muffins’ for when the kids go back to school, but all your creations are beautiful and very yummy looking!!

RagzRebooted · 16/04/2022 20:17

It's SIL's birthday tomorrow, I'm doing a roast for 10 and have made her a cake. Victoria sponge, jam and cream filling, topped with drizzle icing made with lemon juice and the only pack of sprinkles I could find in the pantry. The icing was too runny and most ran off the top, down the sides and on to the plate... To be fair, my cakes usually look like shite but taste good, so no one will be disappointed!

I'm not posting a photo Blush

OP, your cake is spectacular.

OK, I feel better now Grin
cavalatete · 16/04/2022 20:22

Definitely not a weight loss thread this. All I now want to do is eat cake. One slice would be fine if I hadn't been munching on a secret stash of chocolate eggs for the past month! 😂

TheChild · 16/04/2022 20:24

You are too kind. Reeeally to kind 😁 although to be fair, it did taste OK.
The icing is strawberry angel delight, made with half the amount of milk and then mixed with icing sugar.
I ALWAYS think I know best and that I'll never need that much icing sugar and half will be just fine.
Probably why my cakes always turn out looking like melted candles 😂 any icing tips you can share OP? I desperately want to be that person who makes beautiful looking cakes and I've a chocolate fudge cake ready to ice and I so want it not to look like the dogs dinner!

TheChild · 16/04/2022 20:25

😂 I just want to make people feel bad by being TOO perfect is all 😇

TheChild · 16/04/2022 20:26

Argh new name change fail, never mind! Have outed myself as a rubbish Baker!

I thought it looked like strawberry, I bet it tastes divine.

Easiest way to ice a chocolate fudge cake nicely is to make a chocolate ganache, let it cool until it's a thick pouring consistency, put the cake on a wire rack over an oven tray, and pour it over the top. Lovely clean finish.

I usually just make butter icing and plaster it on with a palette knife though, then stick decorations over the crappy bits Grin

I made a simnel cake today but DD has decorated it... OK I said it had to have 11 marzipan balls but I definitely didn't say it had to honour the cat!

Can I show off my Easter cake? And would anyone like to show me theirs?
TheChild · 16/04/2022 20:36

Thank you @Greensleeves I was planning to make a chocolate ganache. If I make it tonight and leave it in the fridge overnight will it be too hard to use? Normally when make ganache I'm too impatient to wait for it to set properly and always end up with a sliding mess of a cake 😶

My cakes never taste too bad. Bit like me, look like shit but OK underneath 😂

@Greensleeves that is a fabulous looking cake. I'd never even imagine one like that never mind be able to make it! What a talent you have Smile
