Willy wonka - Gene Wilder or Johnny Depp??

The DC have listed to the story and want to watch the film. I've only seen the 1971 version. I usually like Johnny Depp but wasnt convinced by the trailer, but wonder if the dc would prefer the modern version.

Wasn't it originally set in the USA - the sequel is called The Great Glass Elevator and ends with the Bucket family setting off to the White House?

It can't have been a 50p originally because it was published in 1964 - before decimalisation.

Presumably the text was updated? I'm quite sure it was 50p when I read it.

I'm pretty sure the setting is intentionally vague so as to make kids believe it is happening in the country where they live. The other kids are stereotypically American (x2), British and German. In the movie Charlie has an American accent but his teacher and a lot of other people in his town have British accents. And the movie is visibly filmed in Germany giving it the whole Brothers Grimm fairly tale quality. And the factory is in Charlie's hometown.

I bet in the book they changed the 50p to a quarter in the US editions. But they wouldn't have had to change much else that I remember.

I think both were good.
Not sure I’d let an unaccompanied child in with either though.

Gene Wilder. No contest, as far as I'm concerned.

Gene wilder though the boat ride with the chicken was a but odd. Can see why Roald Dahl wasn't keen but compared to the awkwardness and oddness of the Johnny Dept version. ..a whole lot better!
