The DC have listed to the story and want to watch the film. I've only seen the 1971 version. I usually like Johnny Depp but wasnt convinced by the trailer, but wonder if the dc would prefer the modern version.

GW

GW by a mile.

Rodion · 16/04/2022 02:51

Gene Wilder instead of Johnny Depp in the newer film would be my favourite.

Meggymoo777 · 16/04/2022 02:56

Gene Wilder all day, every day x

ChocoLiebniz · 16/04/2022 02:57

Gebe Wilder 100%.

Johnny Depp has always given me the creeps, though.

Gene Wilder played the role as kooky, witty and mysterious. Depp was just sinister.

Glenthebattleostrich · 16/04/2022 03:02

Gene Wilder. Even though he kidnapped my baby in a hot air balloon when I was pregnant (repeated bad dream!)

Jonny Depp is incredibly creepy and awful.

I think Johnny Depp was supposed to come across a bit weird as his father was played by Christopher Lee ( famous for being Dracula) and he was a dentist in the film and a bit of a scary one.lol

That’s what I thought anyway.

Theoldwoman · 16/04/2022 03:37

Gene Wilder definitely!

Deathraystare · 16/04/2022 14:18

Gene Wilder all day long!

oliviastwisted · 16/04/2022 14:21

One of my favourite memories with DD was when we watched Gene Wilder and half way through she nipped our to the loo and I put on Johnny Depp at the same point, she must have been 10 at the time and she never noticed Grin

CocktailNapkin · 16/04/2022 14:35

Gene Wilder for sure, though that whole movie is a psychotic trip. The boat scene alone...

I appreciate the Depp/Burton version in its own way, but Wilder's comedic timing lent a bit more dimension to the role compared to Depp's loner weirdo approach.

Florenz · 16/04/2022 14:39

The Johnny Depp one is absolutely terrible, on every level. The Gene Wilder one is one of the greatest films of all time.

100problems · 16/04/2022 14:51

Wilder

4kinell · 16/04/2022 14:52

I prefer the gene wilder one , but I'm sure I read somewhere that Roald Dahl hated it

junglejane66 · 16/04/2022 15:09

I liked Orlando Bloom in Extras when Maggie asked him about Johnny Depp, and amongst other things he said 'Willy Wonka? Johnny Wanker'.

Thats all you need to know

I am old enough to have read the book (several times, still have a battered copy) before GW movie.

To me the GW movie feels more faithful to the book in atmosphere, the weird mix of innocence & character flaws. Was there something in book about WW having a dentist father & sweets-eating trauma? I don't recall that at all. GW is a mix of kindly & weird; JD is just sinister & self-centred. The Depp movie is more brutal without being funny.

Guardian says below is why Dahl didn't like GW version: but would he have liked liberties that Depp version took much better? Both movies were too much about WW not Charlie. Depp is just as American as GW; both versions have huge diversions from original story.

Dahl had wanted the arch British peculiarity of Spike Milligan or Peter Sellers for Wonka, he was unhappy with the film’s foregrounding of Wonka over Charlie, he resented plot alterations and additions that muddied the cautionary neatness of his original tale, and he wasn’t a fan of Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley’s perky song score.

Antarcticant · 16/04/2022 15:50

Depp is just as American as GW;

Wasn't it originally set in the USA - the sequel is called The Great Glass Elevator and ends with the Bucket family setting off to the White House?

donquixotedelamancha · 16/04/2022 18:08

Wasn't it originally set in the USA

No. Charlie finds a 50p piece, though there are certainly elements (like the lack of welfare support) which are more like the US at that time.

custardbear · 16/04/2022 18:13

I love Johnny depp but gene wilder all day long ... sorry Johnny, love you in almost everything else!

GrouchyKiwi · 16/04/2022 18:22

I hate both.

Hate.

It can't have been a 50p originally because it was published in 1964 - before decimalisation.
DisforDarkChocolate · 16/04/2022 18:49

Gene Wilder.

However, I liked the rest of the modern cast. JD was creepy. GW was magical, enchanting and captivating.

InFiveMins · 16/04/2022 19:10

I cannot stand the Johnny Depp one.

Gene Wilder's version is far superior!

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 16/04/2022 19:11

Gene wilder is fantastic, johnny depp is meh.

LemonDrizzles · 16/04/2022 20:04
