Do you think the queen is really poorly?

As in dying 😔. I know she is very old and fragile at 95 but I do wonder if she is trying to keep going until the Royal jubilee.

Unless HM has an aggressive untreatable form of cancer (hope not), I'd say yes, she is fed up and has had enough of the pomp, ceremony, and bullshit that goes with being HM and has decided to withdraw.

I reckon that without the onerous duties, she will be ok and could live on for a lot longer than many are speculating.

Have to say though, the thought of Charles as King is not very enticing or interesting. He is a bit of a bore. The monarchy post HM will not be anything like her reign, and public interest will just dwindle or turn into derision, and of course the Press will no longer hold back as I think they have done up to now out of respect for HM.

I hope she has a great time in retirement, and doesn't get too confused counting her millions. What good is it to her now anyway?

I was furious enough that they closed Wisley gardens when Phillip died and caused the most almighty traffic jam. I think cancelling events that people have been looking forward too for years would actually cause riots.

🫣 Let’s hope nothing untoward happens then…

WildRosie · 10/05/2022 10:51

State Opening of Parliament on tv now. I like all the tradition and ceremony and the fact that the BBC's political guests with Huw Edwards aren't bitching and squabbling. I wonder if they are briefed beforehand that this programme isn't the time for that.

This is an interesting article. What actually happens when the Queen dies. Bit of an eye opener actually. (I have posted it before on MN, apologies if you've already seen it) It's quite a lengthy read, and a lot of scrolling down.

And sorry if this offends anyone, but I'd rather post something like this than speculate on the Queen's health and when she might go.

Here

I think it is sad that she won't be seen using a wheel chair, which might be a very good solution to her mobility issues. I think in a way it is disrespectful to disabled people.

Peregrina · 10/05/2022 15:04

I agree about the wheelchair Astrabees. I also think the Queen should have abdicated at 90. Yes, we know she promised to serve her whole life, but she can no longer discharge her duties as she would wish. As for the abdication of her uncle - abdicating under something of a cloud as a relatively young man, is not the same as abdicating when your health is no longer what it was.

Many elderly people won’t use a wheelchair though.

I’ve had family members refuse. My father wouldn’t use one until his arthritis and dementia induced shuffling made it so dangerous that I said I couldn’t take him out anymore without one.

He saw it as giving up and found it embarrassing. I don’t think it shows any disrespect to disabled people, it’s just very hard to accept that it’s needed after a whole life time of being independent.

Doubly so when the worlds eyes are on you.

Peregrina · 10/05/2022 15:12

I too have seen family members refuse because they don't want to admit that they need one. But a good argument would be that 'If it's OK for the Queen, it's OK for you to.'

Squillerman · 10/05/2022 15:26

Yes, I don’t think she has been the same since Phillip’s death. Happens to many elderly people when their spouse dies. Also been a rough couple of years for her with Harry and Andrew, the stress won’t help.

Peregrina · 10/05/2022 15:27

I note that the protocol for when the Queen dies was written before the pandemic. I am not sure that the economy could withstand any more shut downs.

We have also just seen the recent Commonwealth tours by various Royals which have been seen as an inappropriate throwback to an Imperial past.

So true on both counts.

I think it's a pride thing, not wanting to be seen as frail and struggling.
Lots of old people are loathed to be seen with any sort of 'aids', zimmer frames, wheelchair and hearing aid all seem to have much more stigma or something attached to them than walking sticks, or taking someone's arm and glasses do.

Yes, my thoughts exactly. Can this country stand billions lost, businesses shut etc ... after the hit we've taken from the pandemic.

I think/hope it doesn't go as far as the article suggests... more or less two weeks until the funeral of standing still

WeirdPeanutSoup · 10/05/2022 22:06

Well, it'll be quite interesting to see bank notes, coins, stamps, military and police uniforms, insignia etc all be changed to have Charles' face instead of the Queen. Will be quite weird.

PineMartenPeanutbutter · 10/05/2022 22:56

That will be the perfect opportunity for society to go cashless. With all the ramifications that has.

Peregrina · 10/05/2022 22:59

If you are like me and were around long before decimalisation coins with different monarchs on them were still commonplace. Pennies with Queen Victoria's head on used to turn up quite regularly - very much worn though. We still, of course, have a lot of post boxes around installed under previous monarchs.

Whataplanker · 11/05/2022 06:09

I think she's probably terrified of falling in public. Can you imagine the fallout? And if you saw Charles and Camilla arriving yesterday and doing the walk in up stairs and in a parade, she just couldn't do it, even in a wheelchair.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/05/2022 06:19

i dont think people would be furious if gardens were closed when she dies.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/05/2022 06:21

yes, george 6th coins were very common

Interesting read.

I think I’ve said previously on this thread that I will be genuinely upset when the queen is no longer with us.

do find it strange though that in my lifetime there could be three monarchs, even 4.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/05/2022 07:17

the queens speech was a Long speech
i really dont blame a 96 year old for not wanting to read it

Why do people keep saying this? It won't happen at all, only for any new ones. Coins with the King's head on were still being used in the 80s & 90s.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/05/2022 07:22

post boxes surely will change?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 11/05/2022 07:23

new money will be printed but the old money will still be in circulation

Yes. It's all in that article I linked. Here

Police uniforms, bank notes, military and police insignias, coins, notes, passports.
It will take a very long time.

Peregrina · 11/05/2022 08:39

post boxes surely will change?

Only new ones. You can still see VR ones around.
