Do you prefer fruit or veg?

I much prefer veg. I like nearly everything and eat lots of carrots, peas, broccoli and cauliflower especially. I also like most salad vegetables.

The only fruit I really like is bananas and occasionally avocados. I don’t particularly like apples, oranges, grapes, strawberries or any of the common fruits.

I’m thinking about it as trying to increase my fruit and veg intake and I’m not managing five a day!

Agree with the unreliability of fruit ie will the Apricot/plum be absolutely glorious or woody or sour and unpleasant?
Also popular fruit just seems so sugary to me (apples, grapes, mandarins etc) . I don't need more. sugar in my diet unless it's truly delicious
Veg all the way for me - raw, steamed in the microwave or grilled in the air fryer.

Veg definitely. I really hate fruit.

Veg 100%

I love all veg (except peas).

I don't particularly have a sweet tooth. My favourite fruits are the less sweet ones, like tomatoes, cucumber, peppers etc.

ElenaSt · 13/04/2022 19:43

Veg. I don’t eat any fruit as most give me an allergic reaction.

MajorCarolDanvers · 13/04/2022 19:43

Veg

Keithlovessmash · 13/04/2022 19:43

Veg.

I eat a shit tonne of it.

I can’t remember the last time I ate a piece of fruit. Must have been 20 years ago.

Two of my children are the same as me (the other one will gorge on fruit but only likes broccoli and peas).

bluechameleon · 13/04/2022 19:52

Fruit. I love most veg and eat loads, but given a choice I would always pick fruit - melon, mango, strawberries, grapes, nectarines...

@Rememberitwell, while I prefer veg to fruit, I know I sometimes have to eat something I don't particularly enjoy. Like beans in tomatoes sauce.
Maybe an unpopular preference, but I just don't find them appetizing.

So, for breakfast, I eat a banana and orange (they are both ok, but id prefer toast) for lunch I try to have at least four veggies on my plate and for pudding I have defrosted frozen berries with yoghurt. The yoghurt is nice, the berries are ok.

So I think I get my five in two meals. Because I'm old, I don't have much of an appetite, so I'm quite full all day.

And, does wine count? It's grapes so ....

Kezzie200 · 13/04/2022 19:57

Fruit but I think veg are better for you. The most veg I eat are tomatoes...and they area fruit! So, fruit itnis for me.

Thursa · 13/04/2022 19:58

I prefer veg. Fruit can be hit or miss. But then again not much beats a bowl of those crisp, red grapes.

britneyisfree · 13/04/2022 20:05

@Rememberitwell

I find most fruit too sharp. If I eat strawberries or raspberries I need sugar and cream on top but that defeats the object of eating healthily.
I just ate a punnet of raspberries (needed the fibre!) and put avocado oil, sunflower seeds and a pinch of salt. Divine. No sugar needed.
SecondhandTable · 13/04/2022 20:13

I do like a lot of fruit, but overall I prefer veg. I love eating hearty meals packed with loads of veg and get great enjoyment out of that. Whereas fruit...even the fruits I like, in terms of enjoyment from eating something sweet as dessert or a snack, unfortunately I'd rather have a piece of cake or a bar of chocolate! My fave fruits are also very expensive which is another issue - passion fruit for example, and raspberries and strawberries. There's also quite a lot of fruits I don't like: banana, nectarines, sharron fruit, oranges, pears, papayas, watermelon, figs, probably others too. Whereas the only veg I don't like is kale and mushrooms, I happily eat everything else.

Libertaire · 13/04/2022 20:17

I like both. Lots of both. 🐷

Norgie · 13/04/2022 20:21

Neither, nor salad 🤢

grownup2 · 13/04/2022 20:33

And am I being an old misery guts to think that parents and children in the last 20 years have been brought up to thinking you don't need to have a healthy balanced diet as long as you eat a load of sugary fruit? Sorry, off-topic.

duvetdayforeveryone · 13/04/2022 20:36

@Rememberitwell Is tomato fruit or a vegetable?

Cryingintherain99 · 13/04/2022 20:38

I love broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower.
Not so keen on carrots.
I love cherries, grapes and bananas, but can live without apples.
I would say if I were to weigh it all up, the fruit would probably win.
@Rememberitwell Is tomato fruit or a vegetable?
I was always told it was a fruit disguised as a vegetable!

Festivalpartygirl · 13/04/2022 20:44

Love veg, eat loads, fruit is ok and eat possibly one a day.

Rememberitwell · 13/04/2022 20:45

I just googled and a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable depending on context. Never knew that.

Prefer Veg and salad. Rarely buy fruit but eat the odd piece - it's often so disappointing tastewise, mushy and tasteless apples and pears, stringy, juice free oranges, tasteless peaches, nectarines and strawberries.

Why not? Can’t we discuss anything?
Dammitthisisshit · 13/04/2022 20:52

What? Fruit is glorious. Veg is just what you have to eat to stay healthy. But if you like veg eat veg. Onions, celery, leek, tomatoes in cooking are a good way to add portions, depending what type of meals you eat.
