Do you prefer fruit or veg?

I much prefer veg. I like nearly everything and eat lots of carrots, peas, broccoli and cauliflower especially. I also like most salad vegetables.

The only fruit I really like is bananas and occasionally avocados. I don’t particularly like apples, oranges, grapes, strawberries or any of the common fruits.

I’m thinking about it as trying to increase my fruit and veg intake and I’m not managing five a day!

Veg. I just don’t eat fruit (unless you count the odd Jaffa cake 🤣).
I wish I liked it more, but I do manage 3-4 portions of veg/salad a day.

Veggies definitely. But I do quite like grapes and strawberries.

Veg. I’m not a fruit fan at all unless it’s on a pavlova or in a cake.

Springandsummerarecoming · 13/04/2022 21:02

@Svara

Banana at breakfast, two veg at lunch, three at dinner is an easy 6 a day. Do you eat fruit like tomatoes, peppers and cucumber?
Do you make sure you have at least 80g of each veg? Otherwise it’s not a full portion.

80g isn't that much. Might be 60 for a tomato but in general closer to 100.

DragonOverTheMoon · 13/04/2022 21:09

Veg definitely. I do like fruit but it's not that great for you sugar wise.

Ifeellikedancing · 13/04/2022 21:15

Veg. I don't really like a lot of fruit. I like most veg, except cooked peas!

MrsMangelsPortrait · 13/04/2022 21:15

Vegetables. I find fruit too unpredictable / acidic. I have sensitive teeth and it can hurt! I love blackberries, raspberries and strawberries. I like bananas, avocados, mango and pineapples... however fruit is not my 'go to' especially in the colder months, and I have to be in the right mood to eat it.

MrsMangelsPortrait · 13/04/2022 21:16

Oh also, if I eat too much fruit I get stomach ache!

SmellyOldOwls · 13/04/2022 21:16

Veg I suppose which is weird to actually realise because I hated all veg as a child and i don't know when that changed!

I love fruit too especially pineapple and berries but it's quite expensive so I tend to keep fruit for the DCs.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/04/2022 21:17

Not keen on fruit. Love veg.
If you’re not keen on veg plain, low fat crème fraiche stirred through is a game changer. Delish.

MrsMangelsPortrait · 13/04/2022 21:18

This thread is really good to read. I always thought I was the only person in the world to prefer veg over fruit. I always assumed everyone else LOVED fruit

SmellyOldOwls · 13/04/2022 21:18

@CoconutQueen

I can't believe people are discussing this on the internet Biscuit
Ignore her, she's just a bit offended on behalf of her fruity subjects, the coconuts.
ZenNudist · 13/04/2022 21:18

Veg. Really don't like fruit. Will eat strawberry raspberry grapefruit and melon or pineapple at a push. Apples and pears are pointless. Hate bananas

Green beans, spring greens and tenderstem Broccoli are wonderful. Will eat most gree veg. Not huge on root veg.

LabraDabraDoo · 13/04/2022 21:19

I like both, and most like the fruits in disguise- peppers, aubergine, tomatoes, courgette, squash.

Well done on trying to eat more, we should all be doing the same. The evidence of the benefits of a diet with plenty of plants is clear. When I read one of those ‘what did you eat today?’ threads on here I’m always shocked by how little fresh produce, and especially fruit and veg people have eaten.

usernotfound0000 · 13/04/2022 21:20

Veg definitely, only aubergine that I can think I wouldn't eat. Fruit is a texture thing for me, don't mind it blended in a smoothie but not many I will eat in its original form.

Chewbecca · 13/04/2022 21:24

Veg.

If you’re not getting enough, can you think about how much per meal?

I.e. breakfast could have 1 piece fruit with your toast or cereal or yogurt, or you could have 2-3 veg if you have say toms, mushroom and spinach omelette. Off to a great start.

Lunch must include at least 2, if you just have a sandwich, definitely needs salad or veg plus a piece of fruit for pud. Or a veg heavier option would be salad or a homemade soup.

Them for dinner, include at least 3 portions, easier if you use a wide range so as well as your regulars, add in cabbage, leeks, spinach, squash, courgettes, roasted toms.

On a good day with the strategy, close to 10 is achievable quite easily and deliciously!

kimfox · 13/04/2022 21:30

Reading this I realise I always buy fruit for the DC but very rarely eat it myself - although I love watermelon & always eat some if serving DC. Love ripe cherries too. I will also always eat a tinned pear 😂

I do eat pretty much all veg. I don't like broad beans or runner beans & don't buy them but would eat them if served somewhere else.

Camomila · 13/04/2022 21:44

Fruit because I'm lazy and lots of vegetables need cooking/seasoning.

DramaAlpaca · 13/04/2022 21:47

Vegetables. The only fruit I like are raspberries, strawberries and blueberries. I've never met a vegetable I didn't like - apart from celery, which is OK cooked but disgusting raw.

Elphame · 13/04/2022 21:48

Definitely veg. It's rare for me to eat fruit other than the type of vegetables that are technically a fruit.

BertieBotts · 13/04/2022 21:50

Wow, so surprised that so many people prefer veg. I can't get enough of fruit. The only thing that stops me from eating it is the preparation. I would live off a diet of fruit salad if I could.

Kite22 · 13/04/2022 22:10

Veg.

Generally as it is nicer, but also because it is more forgiving.
The fruits I don't mind tend to be
Too hard
Too hard
Too hard
About a 20mins window where they are 'just right' then
Too soft / over ripe / even going mouldy.

All that said, I am surprised what a high proportion of posters are saying veg - I would have expected to be an outlier on this thread.

knowinglesseveryday · 13/04/2022 22:20

I like both, and lots of.
