Why is the USA banning abortion?

MindPalace · 08/04/2022 13:03

It is absolutely horrifying that 21-26 US states are actively considering outlawing abortion. There are no exemptions for rape or incest in many of the proposals.

I see lots of news articles on this eg this one

amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/apr/08/oklahomas-move-to-ban-abortions-is-a-prelude-of-america-without-roe-v-wade

But I can’t find one setting out the reasons why. Why on earth would they want to set back hard-won women’s rights?

And Poland as well. It’s quite scary.

Sorry if there is another recent thread on this btw.

@Endeavormorse

US women should stop having sex. That might make the fuckers sit up a bit.
If you can create a culture here women have very few choices or ability to gain wealth and power without marrying into it, then this will never happen. It's like asking the underpaid to all go on strike, many of them know their families would starve pretty quickly. This is why women and poor people dance to the tune of the rich white men in society.
Twizbe · 08/04/2022 14:19

@5YearsLeft don't forget the women who are denied an abortion also have to pay to give birth. With insurance this might be around $5k without it could be in the hundreds of thousands.

[quote MayMorris]Re the ectopic pregnancy piece…Ohio…it’s not as posters said JUST that they ban abortion for ectopic pregnancy but they insist on reimplanting😱🤔🤦‍♀️

What the hell?!

@ABitBesottedWithMyDog

The UK isn't exactly at the forefront of human rights, despite the rhetoric. Sadly, I can well imagine this happening here in the not too distant future.

Oddly enough, countries where abortion is normal and stigma-free, such as China and Russia, are ones we like to demonise as having poor human rights records.

I guess it depends whether you consider women to be human or not.

There's nothing to indicate it will ever happen here, but in the US its always been a prevalent school of thought. Admittedly don't know about Russia, but China- are you fucking kidding me? Their abortion laws have always been tied tightly to government aims, including their new direction to clamp down heavily on abortions to increase the birth rate.
Ringmaster27 · 08/04/2022 14:21

Those in favour of abortion are seemingly unable to comprehend that there is a sizable amount of people who are against it.

No, I totally understand that people are against it.
But their opinion on the matter should bear absolutely no weight on my human right to healthcare. Abortion is healthcare.
Don’t like abortions? Fine. Don’t have one.

Ansjovis · 08/04/2022 14:21

It's terrifying. I have no respect for any pro-birth perspectives but the "no exceptions" variant is actually a bit easier to understand because if you have that view you can do some mental gymnastics to make yourself believe that you care about the unborn. I have spoken to some Americans like this and they openly acknowledge that they believe the unborn's rights should trump that of the mother in all cases. If you have exceptions you're basically saying that some women deserve compassion but most deserve forced pregnancy and birth. I've yet to hear anyone in this group properly justify that position.

Ringmaster27 · 08/04/2022 14:22

@Hospedia now there’s an image forever bleached into my brain 🤢🤢

skodadoda · 08/04/2022 14:23

According to this the ectopic pregnancy clause was removed. I still think the USA is trying to put women back to the 50s.

endofthelinefinally · 08/04/2022 14:24

USA male politicians who wish to ban termination of ectopic pregnancies are probably as well educated as British male politicians who believe that men can grow a cervix.

HotDogKetchup · 08/04/2022 14:24

I can’t remember which state but when I had an ectopic pregnancy I learned that I would likely have died there - as the removal of the pregnancy (together with my ruptured tube) would have been considered an abortion. That was quite a frightening realisation.

AbleCable · 08/04/2022 14:24

In the UK, abortion was only legalised in Northern Ireland in 2020.
The DUP are actively trying to reverse this again.

This is not just an issue in the US.

Smokeahontas · 08/04/2022 14:24

Bear in mind abortion was only legalised in NI two years ago, and Brandon Lewis has recently had to step in to force the services being set up. Many women here still need to go to mainland GB to get one

Poland is easy- it's a very very Catholic country. Also very pro breastfeeding. I think over 90%

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/04/2022 14:26

It’s largely down to the more fundamentalist Christian elements, IMO. The Bible Belt is a very strong force across the pond.

Bootothegoose · 08/04/2022 14:26

America - a third world country in a Gucci belt.

It’s terrifying. Makes me so grateful to be British.

DogandMog · 08/04/2022 14:26

Abortion needs to remain legal on the statute books for women in situations of rape and abuse, and I mean that in a more broad sense, including coercive sex.

Men need to start being held morally, legally and financially responsible for the messes that unwanted pregnancies bring. Maybe they should start being forced to think in advance where and how they dip their appendages. There's DNA tests these days to arbitrate disputes.

Deeper than the abortion issue though is the casual/hook up sex culture that needs to change. Young people need to start being taught that sex is for deepening meaningful relationships and creating offspring. And that when opposite gametes are intimately close, there's ALWAYS a possibility of pregnancy, no matter what contraception is used. Both sexes using each other as living sex robots in throwaway encounters is as depressing and dehumanising as it gets.

MindPalace · 08/04/2022 14:27

If my geography is right (it may not be), a woman in Austin, Texas, (the capital) will have to travel to Wichita, Kansas (my guess as it’s near the border) for the nearest abortion clinic.

545 miles away. How is a woman supposed to do that in any case, but particularly if she is or a low income or wishes to keep her abortion a secret - that is not a day trip distance away?

I’m so angry.

Just throw this one n there too….state legislators law making to jail women not just if they have an abortion, but if a miscarriage can be deemed negligent
I think this article states 413 women, mostly indigenous women…certainly not the wives of the anti abortionists
www.insider.com/woman-jailed-for-miscarriage-shows-rise-in-prosecutions-of-pregnancy-2021-10

Wnikat · 08/04/2022 14:28

I would be anti abortion in a world where contraception is wildly available, including men (if we’re going to control people’s bodies maybe let’s develop a contraceptive that all men have to take until the state deems them ready for parenthood?), where sex education is perfectly taught, where no woman was ever raped or pressured to have sex she didn’t want, and where the state provided every parent with a liveable level of benefits. In the absence of that, in the imperfect world we live in, there is no such thing as no abortion, just no safe abortion

UhtredsLatestPaganHussy · 08/04/2022 14:29

Nah.

FTEngineerM · 08/04/2022 14:29

the casual/hook up sex culture that needs to change

Again.. telling women what to do with their bodies.

SausagePourHomme · 08/04/2022 14:29

@BuffyFanForever

It is absolutely not about hating women. Half of the babies aborted are women! It is due to the continuing scientific and medical knowledge being gained. There are many babies born at 20weeks who now survive and thrive (this is the abortion limit in this country which is shocking). Yes there are strong lobbyists in the US who are Christian but there are also many other people who support the rights of babies to not be harmed.
Sorry.this made no sense at all. Try again.

She's not supposed to be able to do it.
Twizbe · 08/04/2022 14:30

The ectopic pregnancy clauses make me so angry.

I've got a friend who's had 2 ectopic pregnancies, along with 4 other miscarriages. Every one of those pregnancies was wanted. She would have been over the moon to be able to move the ectopic pregnancies to her uterus. It's just not possible.
