I bought veg oil In Sainsburys yesterday they had loads. Then again I buy what I need as I'm not greedy and panic buying

raspberrymuffin · 07/04/2022 16:24

To the grow your own posters...I have an allotment. Past experience tells me I can get about 6 months worth of potatoes out of it but everything else is just eaten as it's ready. So from July to August I don't need to buy many green veg, and then I don't need to buy potatoes (and can cut back on other carbs) in the autumn. It won't keep us going all year. There's a reason the population only really took off in this country once we moved away from medieval strip farming.

samthebordercollie · 07/04/2022 16:27

Refined olive oil for frying.
Extra virgin olive oil for dips etc.
Beef dripping for roast potatoes.
Butter.

This is how we should all cook. Vegetable oils are so bad for your health. The fact that there is a shortage of them, and potentially wheat, will be a positive thing for the health of everyone.

@Itsbackagain upland farmers, of which there are quite a few in Scotland, are some of the poorest in the country, what are you talking about! Many barely break even.

Threads like this show how little people know about how their food is produced, it’s shocking and I’m sure a reason that so much food is wasted in this country. If people knew the huge effort that it takes they might not be so lax. People saying farmers should just plant ‘more of X quickly’ is frankly ridiculous. Years of rotations are planned at a time, farming is clearly much more skilled and technical than people appreciate.

£2.99 for a bottle of vegetable oil in our corner shop last week! I nearly had a breakdown, how can oil go up more than 50% in a month.

Extra virgin olive oil is only £5.00 for a litre bottle in Waitrose so that seems a lot for veg oil!

@knittingaddict

The expensive rapeseed oil you didn't like the taste of will have been cold pressed rapeseed oil.

Vegetable oil is usually made of bog standard rapeseed oil which is pretty much tasteless, like sunflower oil Smile

Not having a go (as there as far more awful things going on right now and we need to be nice to eachother), but I prefer the oil to be tasteless, as I'd prefer the full flavour of the food I'm frying! to come through.

I couldn't get oil in Lidl when I looked but the stock in Tesco was normal. No issues with tomatoes anywhere here but Lidl frequently has gaps in the shelves anyway, never seems to have recovered since the early lockdown panic buying days

FourChimneys · 07/04/2022 18:08

Plenty of tomatoes in Lidl today. Hardly any oil, no tissues.

Possibly a few gaps but they had flour which I needed.

mocktail · 07/04/2022 18:11

@Lottie4 Oh me too! I use plain vegetable oil or olive oil, nothing fancy Smile I was just trying to describe the difference.

I thought that frying in olive oil was bad for us (carciogenic/smoke point/somehing or other)

I stopped after reading something and save olive oil for salads /dipping now but cant now remember what I read...!!

maddy68 · 07/04/2022 18:22

Tomatoes have been an issue since brexit tomato juice is like hens teeth.

maddy68 · 07/04/2022 18:23

@toomuchlaundry

How can you use a bottle of oil a week?
Us too. Olive oil in everything. Drizzled over salads , dressings , breads
knittingaddict · 07/04/2022 18:34

That's extra virgin olive oil OutlookStalking. The olive oil I use for cooking is the refined type which has a higher smoking point and is fine for the cooking that I do. I don't deep fat fry anything, so it's usually just browning and stir frying.

latriciamcneal · 07/04/2022 18:36

@VeganVampire

I'm surprised that the whole food supply thing isn't worrying more people to be honest. In the agricultural industry we've known about the problems for weeks - the Ukraine isn't called the bread basket of Europe for nothing - we're basically shitting ourselves and waiting for it to really happen.
Has it been on the news? I find most people don't believe things unless they see them explicitly stated on the news.

That's fine by me. I have expensive taste in food, but I don't want my once in a blue moon fried egg to taste of rape seed.

latriciamcneal · 07/04/2022 18:38

@earsup

bought for friends also...see above !
Why does that even matter? If there is going to be a genuine supply shortage then there will come a point you can't actually buy what you need when you need it. What then? Starve along with everyone else? No thanks.
greenlynx · 07/04/2022 18:47

I wonder if it’s Lidl’s issue. We started doing shopping at our local Lidl on the evening while DD’s at the club (used to pop in the afternoon before) and their evening choice’s very poor.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/04/2022 18:48

no sunflower oil at all in tesco at the weekend
no tomatoes in the two tescos i went to the previous weekend.

olive oil is more expensive
sunflower oil is bought for dh to make a carrot cake

MrsLargeEmbodied · 07/04/2022 18:49

i thought vegetable oil had sunflower oil in it?

maddiemookins16mum · 07/04/2022 19:02

I’ve gone back to Lard.
