I dont know @elbea I think all of the new import/export faffage has caused a lot of delays and also made it less appealing for businesses to transport to the UK.
I think Brexit in this instance has a lot to answer for wether you are for or against it has caused many issues.
Yes I am sure staffing issues due to Covid and other world pressures are in the mix.

elbea · 10/04/2022 12:17

@ilovebagpuss instead of guessing it’s primarily Brexit to blame (spoiler - it isn’t), you could take five minutes to read around the subject. It’s primarily down to fuel prices and sunflower oil and the coming grain shortages are completely due to the war in the Ukraine. Spain exports £4 billion worth of food to the UK each year, they aren’t going to stop because of extra paperwork.

There are labour shortages in the UK farming industry as a result of EU citizens leaving but that has no impact on sunflower oil or salad vegetables coming from Spain.

@Ifailed

We are nowhere self-sufficient in many basic foodstuffs in the UK, so the government's response is to encourage farmers to 're-wild' and grow less food.
Yes it's scary

All that seems to happen is they build more houses on farmland

You've not seen the lorry queues at Dover then?

ilovebagpuss · 11/04/2022 19:13

@elbea Rude! Just discussing ideas and opinions and yes I have read around the subject thanks.
Could you not just give your opinion and interesting point of view without being unpleasant?
The war in Ukraine is not causing the current car park situation with food spoiling in lorries in Dover/Kent. No problems Calais side i see.

elbea · 11/04/2022 22:33

@flashbac I have, but they the main cause is P&O being out of operation so there isn’t as many crossings coinciding with the Easter Holidays and an IT issue. The French aren’t having an IT issue so there aren’t queues. The technical problem means they are processing by hand which takes 15 minutes per lorry.

elbea · 11/04/2022 23:29

@ilovebagpuss it’s not opinion though, it’s internationally recognised by world leaders that there is a world wide crisis in food shortages coming. This thread is full of people explaining why it isn’t brexit but you’ve decided it is the faff of paperwork.

If Brexit was the problem, Egypt wouldn’t be facing huge crisis in food shortages right now. Australia wouldn’t be reporting shortages based on increased fuel prices. America wouldn’t be warning it’s farmers to diversify to try and plug the shortage gaps. Sri Lankan’s wouldn’t be protesting 14% increases in their food prices. The likelihood is that we will generally be okay in this country and largely shielded. People living in countries like Lebanon and Ethiopia aren’t going to be.

The IT issue is because of Brexit. We wouldn't need such a stupid complicated customs system if we didn't have brexit.

cakeorwine · 12/04/2022 07:52

Lots of issues.

Not helped by imposing custom checks and food checks on a border which is a sea crossing - whereas the rest of Europe is in a union with land crossings and no checks on imports and exports between countries.

Who'd have thought that imposing checks could cause delays?

I went to Lidl, Asda and Aldi then got my oil finally at Aldi.

I went to Lidl 1, Asda, Aldi and then Lidl 2 to finally get my tomatoes and foil. 2 quid for 9 tomatoes when I usually get the 6 for 67p. Tissues were nowhere.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 14/04/2022 07:45

tesco has a different brand of sunflower oil, twice the price
