Get the whale thing now sorry was slow on the uptake

@Chipstick10

Because selfish arseholes greedy panic buy. I served a woman on wed who had eight bottles of sunflower oil
Hopefully she was buying some of it for her friends and family, otherwise chances are she won't use it before the sell/best date!

I think shops will have to go back to rationing, as we saw in the initial weeks of covid. It's take sorting though and poor staff get abused.

Oh I've come across wrong ... I'm finding it difficult to find the right words without treading on more toes..
So I'll just say sorry for any offence..it wasn't meant

How do you make an onion sweat? Chase it round the block.

I am a middle class lay-dee. My onions do not sweat, they glow.

Just got back from sainsburys , no shortages there of anything.

flyingdream · 08/04/2022 19:38

No tomatoes or tissues anywhere!

Blueberrycreampie · 08/04/2022 19:50

Waitrose delivery on Tuesday, tomatoes sunflower oil, bread - everything I ordered!

RampantIvy · 08/04/2022 20:02

I bought tissues today. I could buy tomatoes if I had wanted to. The sunflower oil was a bit sparse, but I don't buy it anyway. I use light olive oil for cooking with as I don't like the taste of rapeseed oil.

Viviennemary · 08/04/2022 20:04

Not surprised there is none when folk are buying 4 bottles. Hmm

Or maybe you should read the OP's updates where you would have learned that she was buying for other people as well as herself Hmm
OverByYer · 08/04/2022 22:39

So she says. Weird how all 4 ran out at the exact same time 🙄

MrsLargeEmbodied · 09/04/2022 18:15

No sunflower oil in Asda today, not much vegetable oil either, was it taken by mumsnetters

chickenpestopanini · 09/04/2022 18:27

Just back from Aldi. The woman restocking the sunflower oil was mobbed and people were buying multiple one litre bottles.

Is this for real?
flyingdream · 09/04/2022 22:23

@Viviennemary maybe you should have walked faster to get a bottle.

Newestname002 · 10/04/2022 01:36

Was In Waitrose yesterday and, whilst there were less bottles of sunflower oil on the shelves there was still a decent amount of stock and also a notice saying rationing purchases to only two bottles per person. There was plenty of other oils available too. 🌹

MrsLargeEmbodied · 10/04/2022 06:49

that is crazy that they are having to ration

MrsLargeEmbodied · 10/04/2022 06:49

it seems crazy that people would need to be told that it is rationed, that people would actually stock pile this

isthismylifenow · 10/04/2022 07:37

I'm in another country, but the price of sunflower oil is just ridiculous. And we are limited to buying 2 per person. I do have to buy it as I use it to make bread.

mocktail · 10/04/2022 07:42

Presumably you only use a small amount and could substitute a different kind of oil? However I realise this is only a short term solution as there will be a knock-on effect on other types of oils.

Cappucinoextrachocolate · 10/04/2022 08:22

With all the food shortages, spare a thought please for people with allergies. DS has 6 severe food allergies, we can't just replace foods with other brands easily. Not a problem so much about sunflower oil but I am worried about other food shortages.
Due to his allergies we tend to make our own bread. Believe it or not some flour isn't suitable for him as may contain his allergens. So it's not as easy as "replace with something else". It takes meal planning to a whole new level.

ilovebagpuss · 10/04/2022 09:00

Our local aldi was very low stocked generally yesterday no salad veg at all except about 4 cucumbers.
DH read that a lot of tom growers cant afford to heat their huge greenhouses this year so are not producing so that might hit later domestic crops.
It does annoy me that its not openely discussed on the news just another thing we have to accept as lower quality of life. French supermarkets are full of produce and choice. I did not vote Brexit but even if this is Brexit/supply related as well as other issues why is it not being addressed and tackled.
Our Sains is better stocked but still has noticeable gaps.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 10/04/2022 09:08

pretty sure if this was on the news, more widely known, panic buying would ensue

elbea · 10/04/2022 09:52

@ilovebagpuss I hear it discussed quite frequently on the news, it’s just nobody listens!

I’d expect France is better stocked as they have a different climate. For example, they grow about 8x as many tomatoes as the UK. They are pretty self sufficient in tomatoes and export a great deal to other countries. We are reliant on Spain largely for tomatoes. The protests by lorry drivers there mean we aren’t getting them. How do you expect Britain can tackle this? The strike was temporarily stopped a few days ago so we may see food supply start to return.
