I've bought a few types of tomatoes from 2 different shops in the last two days.

toomuchlaundry · 06/04/2022 22:40

Why did you buy 4 bottles the other day, are you part of the problem?

QueenOfHiraeth · 06/04/2022 22:42

I bought tomatoes yesterday and our local supermarket had loads of different types. I didn't buy oil this week but didn't notice any large gaps

EcoCustard · 06/04/2022 22:42

Lidl had no tomatoes, peppers or courgette today, the gaps were more noticeable today. Oil been low for a while and no eggs on my visit for three weeks in a row. My local Lidl has been crap for a year now. Noticeable gaps in other aisles, no pallets and I think they have stopped trying to pad out the gaps.

for friends...not just for our household...as they couldn't get any !

I'm surprised that the whole food supply thing isn't worrying more people to be honest. In the agricultural industry we've known about the problems for weeks - the Ukraine isn't called the bread basket of Europe for nothing - we're basically shitting ourselves and waiting for it to really happen.

underneaththeash · 06/04/2022 22:48

Shops fine here today. In fact, first time in ages I could get everything I wanted.

powershowerforanhour · 06/04/2022 22:49

Sadly the country where they make sunflower oil is getting bombed to absolute buggery. Poor bastards.

Very good point - buying four bottles sounds like panic stockpiling rather than buying what you need when you need it.
underneaththeash · 06/04/2022 22:51

@VeganVampire well if you really limit your diet, yes you may have issues if there are problems - but there aren't any yet.
You could always chose to have a normal diet and then you'll be fine.

NewBootsAndRanty · 06/04/2022 22:54

@underneaththeash
Have you thought that through properly?

ChazzaGirl · 06/04/2022 22:56

Oh fuck off with your panic buying nonsense. Seriously, I’ve tried to be a well behaved member of this online community but I’m getting really pissed off with this shite.

There’s always one isn’t there.

earsup · 06/04/2022 23:00

bought for friends also...see above !

I was obviously folIowing on regarding supply issue from Ukraine. They supply lots of ingredients for a massive amounts of products which we use and manufacture here in the UK.

DuesToTheDirt · 06/04/2022 23:07

Around 75% of sunflower oil is from Ukraine and Russia.

Anyone read The Railway Man? I haven't seen the film so I'm not sure if this part appears in the film...so he's brutally tortured by the Japanese, eventually gets home and his fiancee (who incidentally he doesn't tell about his torture) says something like, "We've had it tough here too, we couldn't get hold of eggs..."

Sh05 · 06/04/2022 23:23

I wonder ifcertain parts of the country have shortages and not others.
I've noticed sunflower oil missing from Lidl but Aldi had loads. Lots of variety of fruit and veg available as well in Lidl, Aldi Asda and our local Asian supermarket.
I was worrying about free range eggs but they've been available also

Peaness · 06/04/2022 23:25

It was on the news yesterday or the day before. They were talking to a factory manager and there's only 4 weeks supply left of sunflower oil because of the war in Ukraine.

knowinglesseveryday · 06/04/2022 23:27

Fine where I live.

Absolutely agree!
MrsAmaretto · 06/04/2022 23:31

Buy rapeseed oil instead? Grown in this country

buddy79 · 06/04/2022 23:32

Asda online had a statement about uk wide shortage of tomatoes when I shopped this evening. They had some but only the expensive ones!

SevenWaystoLeave · 06/04/2022 23:38

In Sainsbury's earlier, plenty of tomatoes, plenty of vegetable oil.

TheVillageOfUpperDenture · 06/04/2022 23:42

buy dripping or butter - that's what i am doing having seen a shortage of oils here too

VyeBrator · 06/04/2022 23:42

We have bought 4 bottles a few weeks ago

Why couldn't your friends get hold of any a few weeks ago? This is a very recent thing Confused
