Are mirrors at night a bit spooky

I have always had this fear of looking into a mirror at night, I think it's due to watching totally inappropriate horror films at a young age in the 80s Confused I am now approaching 40 and just had to use the bathroom in the night and have realised how completely daft it is to have to avoid looking at the mirror and run away quickly in the middle of the night Blush

Anyone else convinced that if you look in a mirror at night Bloody Mary or some other kind of awful ghost will appear over your shoulder BlushGrin

Yep. Or a door that you can't otherwise see.

Mirrors are quite scary tbh...

At 3:30 AM after a dinner party the night before and a few bottle of Sauvignon it is quite frightening having a mirror next to the door into the toilet.

Discodancinggiraffe · 06/04/2022 07:37

I read in a Barbie magazine when I was about 7 that you could see the devil in the reflection of a mirror at night. I never forgot this. I don't ever look at a mirror at night. Perhaps you read the same magazine?

I think it was to do with superstitions or something like that but thats the only thing I remember about it.

LittleDidSheKnow · 06/04/2022 16:50

Blimey!
Am I the only person who thinks a mirror at nighttime is still just a pane of glass with a metallic reflective coating on the back?

thecurtainsofdestiny · 06/04/2022 16:54

Only on Mumsnet have I learned that people find mirrors at night scary - it was mentioned on another thread.

I have not watched enough horror movies evidently!

Saucery · 06/04/2022 16:55

That will be the last line of the story they write about you, LittleDidSheKnow

As she turned around with a huff of dismissal at the ridiculous notion of a witch trapped in the smooth, dark glass, a wizened hand reached slowly yet inexorably towards her…….little did she know”

Vegansausageroll · 06/04/2022 16:55

Lol, not at all scary, I’ve got one diagonally opposite my bed and never seen the devil Grin.

Discodancinggiraffe · 06/04/2022 16:56

Yet

vodkaredbullgirl · 06/04/2022 17:02

I scare myself at night, especially when I have scary bed hair.

iklboo · 06/04/2022 17:02

I can't look in a mirror at night. No idea why but it gives me the heebie geebies.

CircusBaby · 06/04/2022 17:07

I never look in the bathroom mirror when I get up for the toilet during the night, or if I have to go downstairs I avoid the one in the living room too. My gran was really superstitious about mirrors and it clearly rubbed off! According to her you should never show an unbaptised baby it's reflection because mirrors are portals for demons and they can enter the soul of a child who hasn't been baptised. Same if you stare into one long enough you'll see the devil staring back.

LittleDidSheKnow · 06/04/2022 17:12

Dammit! That's going to be playing on my mind now during those middle of the night loo visits @Saucery!!!

Not mirrors for me but I can’t look out a window in the dark just in case there’s a face staring back at me. Just no.

Same. I hate windows at night time. I can't go to my fridge at night, because I can see the patio door from it. My garden is long and dark, and creeps me out at night. No thanks

I am the same. I make sure to close all my blinds before it gets dark so I can potter about and not worry if someone is watching me🤣 (i live in the country side) so the only thing really looking back is likely a cow but I won't take any chances😆
Nnique · 06/04/2022 17:20

I’ve got a glass door in my kitchen. Not fun.

Buzlightyear1 · 06/04/2022 17:21

My sister told me a horrible story about a girl stuck in the mirror who grabs u when u turn round when I was little. Then a few years ago I was in Lebanon where we get power cuts a lot. I happend to be in the bathroom when the electric went out. I had a torch so switched it on reached out for tje tap and saw my own arm in the mirror but looked to me in the dark like it was reaching out to me. I have never ever moved so fast in my life. I hate them and don't like my back to them at all.
