Why do some people drink in the evenings?

Something I’ve always been curious about really, but never bothered asking because it’s none of my business😂 But I’ve been seeing people post about it so much recently and it’s piqued my curiosity once again. I’m hoping that somebody could please explain the appeal to me?

To me wine doesn’t taste particularly nice, even the good ones. It costs a lot if you want one that’s not grim, it’s full of calories, it’s not great for health and one or two glasses won’t do much more than make you feel a bit groggy and headachey. I do drink socially and enjoy it, but if I only end up having one or two I stay sober and just feel a bit crap and my mood just gets dragged down a bit.

What is it I’m missing? Is it really just code for actually drinking a full bottle or two and having a one man party every night? Do some people actually love the taste, or get some kind of good effect from a small amount? Honestly dying to know😂

@MiladyBerserko

Unacceptable behaviour. I only drink in the mornings.
I like to start in the morning…

Sorry - I can't move on from the 9 bottles of low alcohol wine. No wonder you didn't like the taste of it ..... and who buys a case of wine to drink on one day when they aren't sure if they like wine 🤣

There must be a market for non-alcoholic wine, surely? If people like the taste but don't drink to get drunk, then that would be the answer. Much better for their health too I would have thought.

There is a market for it, of course. There are also plenty of non alcoholic wines on the market. They’re all rank. The problem is, one of the things that makes wine taste so nice and smooth and mellow is the alcohol.
LynetteScavo · 04/04/2022 23:06

I bloody love a glass of red wine with a meal. I love it so much I pour myself a glass while cooking.

After work there is nothing that washes the stress of the day away like a very hot shower and a glass of wine. For me, anyway. Some people might like sitting in a tepid bath in the evening. Not me. I get that other people do, though.

If it actually tasted anything like wine then yes, it would be the answer.

I enjoy a glass of Prosecco or two at the weekend, it feels like a treat. Unfortunately two glasses makes me drunk these days, and I always wake in the night regretting it !

Their is and they sell them at the shops. It tastes OK, but nowhere near as good. And it costs the same (since it it more complex to prepare).
OnoNotagain · 05/04/2022 07:03

I have a couple of glasses of wine 3-4 evenings a week, mostly out of boredom if I'm honest. I rarely watch TV, DH is a boring old fart with no conversation and there's only so much reading I can do. So a glass of wine does, at least, help the evening pass.

.... and I quite like it. Most red wines have a pleasing, warming sort of taste which I enjoy .....

3WildOnes · 05/04/2022 07:06

I do think this is an age thing. When I was younger and at uni we would drink to get drunk on cheap wine that tasted awful.
Now I will spend on a decent bottle of red that I really enjoy. I would now drink one bottle over three days, so a large glass in the evening. It makes me feel light headed and relaxed. I don’t ever drink to get drunk these days, not even on nights out.

I think that, although drinking a glass or two of wine doesn't generally make people drunk (unless they aren't used to it) there is, certainly for me, a slight feel good factor beyond the taste and ritual. I have absolutely no interest in drinking non alcoholic wine. I have never tasted it, so am not choosing the normal stuff on taste alone. I definitely think it gives me a nice warm fuzzy feeling, without the drunkenness!
dfendyr · 05/04/2022 10:03

@doeadeeer

9 75cl bottles of wine at 5.5 abv is equivalent to about 13/14 pints of lager at 4.5 abv. I don’t think there’s anything particularly shocking about that amount, spread over a whole day ‘til about 4am?

What on earth are you talking about?

A 750ml bottle of red, white or rosé wine (ABV 13.5%) contains 10 units.
So 9 bottles is 90 units. You would be dead.

Hmm

9 bottles - of course it does dear
dfendyr · 05/04/2022 10:03

sorry @doeadeeer - that was directed at the OP

She clarified she meant some 5% dessert wine - 9 bottles of that would make most people heave! Envy

yeah - I still think its bollocks though - someone who doesnt like wine manages to drink 9 bottles.

I like wine and drink most evenings (around 1/2 to 2/3 a bottle - trying to cut down), and would be legless after 1.5 bottles, and vomiting after 2

Sartre · 05/04/2022 10:20

I think it’s a way to wind down and relax. I drink an options hot chocolate or a peppermint tea to do the same but wine obviously works better for some people.

I would love a non-alcohol wine, but it all tastes revolting!! I think I’ve tried them all!! Non-alcoholic beer is pretty good though and I happily drink that. If someone could invent a non-alcoholic wine that actually tastes like wine they would make a fortune!!

Elphame · 06/04/2022 12:18

I would also happily drink non alcoholic wine but it tastes dreadful and it costs as much as a bottle of the real thing.

Same with the fake gins - haven't found one yet that is worth drinking and the price is ridiculous for what is little more than a bottle of cordial.

Where have you gone, OP?
Plenty of people have shared that they actually enjoy the taste of wine, so my question was answered about 8 pages ago🙂 I appreciate the people still answering as shows the scale of how many people really do enjoy the taste of course, but there’s not much else I can respond with as all the answers are pretty similar.

I’m also aware that MN is unfortunately very infested with miserable gets who like to seep their negativity into anything and anyone around them so I doubt much would be achieved by my responding to the snidey, derisive comments!

I never could stand the taste of most alcohol, especially beer and wine. It's like something gone off.

There are 2 or 3 mixed drinks I like that have tequila or rum in them.
When I go to the US to visit family, there's nothing better than sitting in rocking chairs on the porch in the evening, sipping well aged moonshine.

I don't need alcohol for stress, to unwind, or turn my brain off. I have medication for that.
