Why do some people drink in the evenings?

Something I’ve always been curious about really, but never bothered asking because it’s none of my business😂 But I’ve been seeing people post about it so much recently and it’s piqued my curiosity once again. I’m hoping that somebody could please explain the appeal to me?

To me wine doesn’t taste particularly nice, even the good ones. It costs a lot if you want one that’s not grim, it’s full of calories, it’s not great for health and one or two glasses won’t do much more than make you feel a bit groggy and headachey. I do drink socially and enjoy it, but if I only end up having one or two I stay sober and just feel a bit crap and my mood just gets dragged down a bit.

What is it I’m missing? Is it really just code for actually drinking a full bottle or two and having a one man party every night? Do some people actually love the taste, or get some kind of good effect from a small amount? Honestly dying to know😂

Not necessarily an age thing, I only really started to appreciate the taste of wine in my 40's but my DD who is 25 loves red wine.

She even belongs to a wine club and enjoys a glass or two a couple of times per week. She has just been on to Italy with her best friend for two weeks and they spent one day on a tour visiting 3 wineries.

What a strange, strange question and thread.

I mean why do some people rave about cake? Why do some people eat their dinner and then snack all evening? Why do some people have red sauce on their sausage sandwich when others have brown sauce or no sauce at all???

Genuinely baffled at how many things people on mn claim to be baffled about.

I think there's a basic misunderstanding about drinking by people who like it. I enjoy a glass often. It doesn't make me tipsy if I just have one glass but it does relax me - in a similar or different way to collapsing on the couch with a cup of tea after a busy day. I also like the taste.

DH and his siblings all find late evening exercise really enjoyable and relaxing - like after 8pm. I think that's crazy and not something I"d ever feel. But I get that it works for them.

Surely it's the same with wine - one person doesn't like it, another does?

I enjoy wine and probably drink more than I should.
I do not drink if I'm stressed or if I'm working or driving the next morning.
I don't get drunk and if it's sunny on a hot day I will drink in the afternoon.
It has to be nicely wine otherwise there's no point.

Oh God I'm sorry I can't even be bothered to read this, I really dislike these faux I don't understand threads, with lots of laughing faces and thinly veiled showing off

I LOVE the taste of wine and the first glass is always the best. I don't worry about calories being a size 10 and although I buy lovely wine at a great price from Aldi it is unfortunately a luxury having to go with the rising cost of living. I miss it.

I buy good wine, and it does taste particularly nice. Yes, I know it's full calories so I don't have a pudding. It's not great for health but biscuits aren't too. One or two glasses doesn't even touch the sides (I wouldn't even feel like I've had a drink after two glasses)

This.

Nobody cares whether you are baffled
You don’t even care yourself this is just about looking down your nose at someone who does something you judge them for regardless of the spectrum of reason quantities and answers.

It’s such a loaded snide sort of thread.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 04/04/2022 18:54

I used to do it to relax. Don't drink any more but like an alcohol free drink some evenings in the same way

LynnThese4reSEXPEOPLE · 04/04/2022 19:07

They get upset when I drink at work...

CornishGem1975 · 04/04/2022 19:31

Because we're all closet alcoholics. Totally drink dependant. That's what you wanted to hear, right OP?

Yeah most people drink in the evenings as it’s the end of the day . It tends to get frown apon if we drink in the morning before work , it’s not really difficult to understand. Confused
Oblomov22 · 04/04/2022 19:55

"I’ve never met anybody who actually enjoys the taste of wine " Hmm FFS.

daysfilledwithdappledlight · 04/04/2022 19:57

I purely love the taste! A lovely glass of red or white with a meal compliments it so well, and adds to the meal. I rarely have more than a glass. It's nothing about the alcohol for me - if they did alcohol free wine that tasted as good I'd have that!
Have been to many vineyards round the world and finding what you like, and opening a chilled bottle of your favourite is a lovely addition to the evening.
I'm pregnant now and haven't missed it a bit as haven't been well enough / fancied it, but look forward to being able to enjoy a glass again in the future!

I agree. If non alcoholic wine tasted the same I'd love it and happily forego the alcohol. Even 11.5% doesn't taste right - has to be 12 or preferably 12.5% to have the proper wine taste
liveforsummer · 04/04/2022 20:08

@TargusEasting

What is it I’m missing?

Most probably a particular gene that would otherwise create even a mild addiction to the stuff?

Taste is genetic too. I attended a science festival demonstrating this. Some people sampled the taste and detected nothing whilst others tried the same thing and it was terribly bitter. There have been cancer treatments developed around this. It doesn't take an alcohol to like the taste of wine

Yep! A glass of red is a real treat and I'm looking forward to enjoying one again when DD2 is born! I used to love cooking dinner with a nice red. Felt like a nice indulgence after a long day.
Xmasbaby11 · 04/04/2022 20:50

I love red wine. The taste of it and the feeling of being relaxed. It goes well with food. As you sip it, it feels quite luxurious and I don't drink a lot. Probably 3 glasses over a weekend. I used to be able to drink a bottle of red on a night out but that would give me a headache these days (I'm 45) so I stick to 1 or 2 glasses per evening.

katepilar · 04/04/2022 20:50

Alcohol just seems to work differently for different people.

gogohm · 04/04/2022 20:52

I like wine and drink a small glass with dinner some nights, enough for a work night. Have more on weekends

navydear · 04/04/2022 22:10

Op, I really don't think the responses here are anything remotely got to do with being defensive. It's more your style of writing and how immature you are coming accross. You have managed to annoy most responders here and I don't even drink alcohol but you sound very judgey and sheltered with you views

MiladyBerserko · 04/04/2022 22:13

Unacceptable behaviour. I only drink in the mornings.
