Why do some people drink in the evenings?

Something I’ve always been curious about really, but never bothered asking because it’s none of my business😂 But I’ve been seeing people post about it so much recently and it’s piqued my curiosity once again. I’m hoping that somebody could please explain the appeal to me?

To me wine doesn’t taste particularly nice, even the good ones. It costs a lot if you want one that’s not grim, it’s full of calories, it’s not great for health and one or two glasses won’t do much more than make you feel a bit groggy and headachey. I do drink socially and enjoy it, but if I only end up having one or two I stay sober and just feel a bit crap and my mood just gets dragged down a bit.

What is it I’m missing? Is it really just code for actually drinking a full bottle or two and having a one man party every night? Do some people actually love the taste, or get some kind of good effect from a small amount? Honestly dying to know😂

@rubydoobydoo ah, that might explain why we preferred the taste of that one then.

That winter warmer feeling is lovely! I’ve had coffee with tia maria and also whiskey with hot lemonade and honey at Christmas, felt like the adult equivalent of hot chocolate😂

@doeadeeer

9 75cl bottles of wine at 5.5 abv is equivalent to about 13/14 pints of lager at 4.5 abv. I don’t think there’s anything particularly shocking about that amount, spread over a whole day ‘til about 4am?

What on earth are you talking about?

A 750ml bottle of red, white or rosé wine (ABV 13.5%) contains 10 units.
So 9 bottles is 90 units. You would be dead.

Hmm

I suppose it’s lucky that I wasn’t drinking a wine that was 13.5% ABV then isn’t it🤨

OP I think I know why you couldn’t get drunk after 9 bottles of wine. Because you keeled over from alcohol poisoning half way through bottle four.

I enjoy the taste of red wine, I have one or two classes on a Friday and sat night. The purpose is not to get drunk or tipsy. And I feel fine in the morning.

Ragwort · 04/04/2022 02:12

I love the taste of wine, I have a couple of glasses most evenings, I enjoy the taste of wine with a meal.

I don't drink to get 'tipsy' or to be sociable..... in fact I went out on Saturday night and deliberately stuck to soft drinks. I don't experience any 'after effects' from just two - three glasses of wine.

Surely you understand that people have different tastes? Personally I never drink tea but can appreciate that many people love drinking tea.

TooManyPJs · 04/04/2022 02:14

I don't tend to drink I the evenings (or much at all lately due the chronic illness) but when we'll a glass or two of wine makes me feel tipsy and upbeat. Not groggy.

Nancydrawn · 04/04/2022 02:26

What wine is 5.5 abc?!

Unless it's cheap moscato. OP, tell me you aren't drinking 9 bottles of cheap moscato and then wondering why you don't like the taste of wine.

backtobusy · 04/04/2022 02:28

OP if you are drinking wine with an abv of 5.5 I suspect it is going to taste dreadful.

I can't actually think of any wine with an ABV that low, or much below 9.

I'm guessing it must be some odd mix or cocktail thing?

But alcohol isn't good for you and the younger generations are drinking less so I wouldn't worry about not liking it much.

Aria999 · 04/04/2022 02:32

Love the taste. Never drink wine I don't like, I choose it carefully.

Scottishskifun · 04/04/2022 02:41

Love a glass of wine in the evening with a self sufficient young family we don't have a social life really as no family baby sitters available and companies charge a fortune.

It's mine and DH unwind time, our couple time and it's nice to relax. We don't do it every night and only have 2 glasses max.

Changechangychange · 04/04/2022 02:44
@MoonriseKingdom I’m quite jealous, that sounds enjoyable and I bet your nights out are lovely and cheap!

@DaisyStPatience 😂😂

@Icantfly The only time I tried to get properly drunk from wine it took me 9 whole bottles! I’m surprised at the tolerance thing, I assumed that people who drank regularly would always have a higher tolerance. Good to know!
I’m becoming increasingly convinced you’re a twelve year old boy who got hold of his mum’s phone Hmm

ThatOneTime · 04/04/2022 02:47

@Nancydrawn 😂😂
I have tried a good few different brands before passing judgement, dw haha.
The one I tolerated best was called Brushetto. It was really sweet and fruity, and was much less offensive than any others I’ve had. Maybe because of the lower ABV %? Another student favourite was echo falls which was 9% and I found it absolutely rank. The more expensive bottles were never any better for me either, but maybe it’s just a preference thing since some people do like it😊

@Changechangychange what an odd thing to say

Changechangychange · 04/04/2022 02:54

Where are you even finding 5.5% wine? That is weaker than most beers. Ocado classes it as “alcohol free wine”. And you found one called a novelty name like Bruschetta and wondered why it was nasty?

OP your alcohol habits are pretty bizarre, you surely must realise this isn’t how most adults consume wine? (9 bottle of novelty alcohol-free wine??)

You think that it’s bizarre for 19 year old University students to buy as much cheap alcohol from Lidl as they can on the weekends?

I think you may be confused with 0.5% ABV, as 5.5% is more than most beer which is certainly not alcohol free.

OP posts:
Changechangychange · 04/04/2022 03:15

Nope, not confused. And I thought you were 25 further up the thread?

ThatOneTime · 04/04/2022 03:24

@Walton45123 🤣🤣

@TooManyPJs Sorry to hear that you’ve been unwell. I can relate, since developing ME it’s often just not worth the energy to do much that I used to enjoy.
I’m wondering if my idea of ‘groggy’ is others idea of ‘relaxed’

@backtobusy I have tried other wines😅 that’s just the one I chose to drink most often as it was the mildest tasting. I don’t even drink anymore, I was just curious after reading quite a few posts on the ‘frivolous spending’ thread earlier🙂

Sunnytwobridges · 04/04/2022 03:29
@garlicandsapphires this is a really good explanation, this is exactly how I feel just after opening my second bottle. Maybe it’s just a case of different alcohol tolerance levels🤔
I get what you mean with the mental health. I hate evenings because I feel super productive but have to wait until morning when everywhere opens haha.

@Talipesmum I’ve never met anybody who actually enjoys the taste of wine so it’s enlightening to hear that some people do. That helps it make more sense😁
That’s strange because everyone I know loves the taste and are always going on about getting home after work so they can have wine and a bath. I don’t get it cause I hate the taste of the stuff Grin

ThatOneTime · 04/04/2022 03:35

@Sunnytwobridges do you mind me asking what kind of age they are, or if they have kids? I’m wondering if it’s an age/stage of life thing or just a coincidence that none of my friends drink at home in the evenings😂

OP posts:
Nancydrawn · 04/04/2022 03:40

Not to be patronizing, OP, but I do think it's something that develops with age -- and more expensive wine is usually better. It doesn't have to be stupid expensive, but if you're drinking it to enjoy rather than to get tipsy, a decent bottle lasts for a while.

If you like super sweet wine, I promise you there's better stuff out there than student moscato. That shit will give you a crazy headache, too!

There are some great Rieslings, or a Vouvray (Demi-sec or Moelleux), and some nice sweet rosés. In not-super-sweet-and-not-super-expensive reds, I really like an easy St Emillion.

Or you know what, OP? You can drink what you want. I'm really, really not a wine snob. If you like a moscato, get a moscato! Just don't get a super-cheap one, because it'll murder you the next day.

navydear · 04/04/2022 03:50

Op I don't drink wine in evenings as I don't like the taste, even though I've tried it many times as I feel jealous when I hear of people heading home after a long day to have a lovely glass of vino..
To be honest, I find your post extremely weird and immature. What age are you,
You've never met anyone who likes the taste of wine? You sound like you need to get out more.

Sunnytwobridges · 04/04/2022 03:53

@ThatOneTime
believe it or not they range from late 20s to 50s. If I tell them I’m having a bad day the first piece of advice is for me to get a glass of wine and have a bubble bath. I have to bite my tongue not to ask what’s with the wine stuff???? I just don’t get it 😂

Why are posters so triggered 'cos the OP doesn't like wine? Grin

I get ya OP, I'm mid-40s and have never understood the 'winding down with a glass' at the end of the day either. Social drinking? 100% but drinking at home makes me either want to go out dancing, or depressed - there's no 'relaxed in-between' for me.

Don't particularly enjoy the taste either....it's ok, but I'd prefer a cuppa tbh. Different strokes 🤷🏻‍♀️

(I could drink mojitos all day long in the sun though!)
