Why do some people drink in the evenings?

ThatOneTime · 03/04/2022 23:17

Something I’ve always been curious about really, but never bothered asking because it’s none of my business😂 But I’ve been seeing people post about it so much recently and it’s piqued my curiosity once again. I’m hoping that somebody could please explain the appeal to me?

To me wine doesn’t taste particularly nice, even the good ones. It costs a lot if you want one that’s not grim, it’s full of calories, it’s not great for health and one or two glasses won’t do much more than make you feel a bit groggy and headachey. I do drink socially and enjoy it, but if I only end up having one or two I stay sober and just feel a bit crap and my mood just gets dragged down a bit.

What is it I’m missing? Is it really just code for actually drinking a full bottle or two and having a one man party every night? Do some people actually love the taste, or get some kind of good effect from a small amount? Honestly dying to know😂

@Whitefire

Work don't like it if I drink in the morning before I go in.

Wink

🤣🤣🤣
teezletangler · 04/04/2022 04:32

I suspect this might be what the OP drank 9 bottles of. Each to their own, I suppose
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Alasia-Brachetto-dAcqui-5-5-75cl/dp/B005JYSW5C

OP this is very much an age and stage thing. I certainly wasn't relaxing at home with a glass of wine on a Friday evening when I was 25. If I wasn't out, then it was probably just a cup of tea. But as a 42 year old mother of young children who rarely goes out socially in the evenings, I definitely enjoy a glass of wine a couple of times a week. I usually have mine earlier, while I cook dinner- cook's drink!

NurseBernard · 04/04/2022 04:33

OP, do you genuinely think -

 • vast acres, across multiple countries around the world, are dedicated to growing vines for grapes
 • viticulturists spend their career making and refining their varietals, and
 • vast swathes of people across the globe drink wine …

…. because they don’t really like it.

Seriously…..?

Confused

@Nancydrawn not patronising at all, after reading all the replies to this thread I do think that it may just be an age thing more than anything (the ‘thing’ probably being that those in their early to mid twenties are more interested in just getting drunk than what they actually drink).

Is moscato the same thing as Brushetto, just a cheap sweet wine? I’ll take heed and put some proper research into it if I’m ever tempted to try wine again, thanks for the suggestions.

@Sunnytwobridges it just feels somehow rude to ask doesn’t it, as though they might take it the wrong way haha! At least now we know eh

@lemmein I’m rather amused too. If anything, I expected that a couple of people might get a bit defensive about the amount or frequency of their drinking, but this was definitely a surprise🤣

I don’t think it’s an age thing. I have loved the taste of wine since (and at) university as did the majority of my friends. I can’t say I have ever seen wine that’s 5% though, is it still allowed to be called wine?!!

I do find it surprising that you can’t understand why people like it though. I don’t particularly like orange juice, I find it too sweet and sickly. But, I can appreciate it’s very popular with people - they obviously like the taste. Do you find you struggle with acknowledging other people’s likes and dislikes or empathy in general?

ThatOneTime · 04/04/2022 05:01

@teezletangler that’s exactly it, thanks for finding the link! That’s brought back some memories.
Cooking dinner is the BEST time to get a bit of peace.

Maybe it just depends on different social groups then🙂

I think that you’re confused. I have never heard anybody before state that they like the taste of wine, so obviously I assumed that everybody disliked the taste and so probably drank it for the inebriation that it brings.
Once posters shared that they do in fact like the taste of wine, which I instantly accepted. There’s absolutely no ‘not understanding why people like it’.

A lot of the thread is some posters struggling to understand why I was previously under the impression that nobody liked the taste of wine, and me explaining how I came to this conclusion. Maybe some posters struggle to acknowledge that other people have different life experiences? But that would be rather rude to conclude from a few brief internet posts.

I don't know that brand, OP, and I tried to find it to check, but it kept directing me to bruschetta recipes!

In any case, you don't have to like the taste of alcohol, and you certainly don't have to like wine. But to me, a good wine is a real treat: one of my favorite tastes.

SpringHasSprungYay · 04/04/2022 05:48

9 75cl bottles of wine at 5.5 abv is equivalent to about 13/14 pints of lager at 4.5 abv. I don’t think there’s anything particularly shocking about that amount, spread over a whole day ‘til about 4am?

I don't know of any wine that is so low in alcohol. Mostly it's around 10-14abv. So that'll explain why you had to drink so much and probably the horrible taste - it must have been very cheap wine!

WeddingHangover · 04/04/2022 06:08

Because I’m bored or have had a very stressful day at work

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/04/2022 06:08

I only drink on Friday and Saturday nights. I'm 31 and I don't like wine. I have a cupboard full of spirits and usually make some kind of cocktail. There is plenty to choose from other than wine!

Libertybear80 · 04/04/2022 06:16

Oh op that's like asking why some people wear flowery dresses or like nightclubbing. Some evenings I sit down with my eldest ( now 22) and we have a glass of wine. It's a social act. We could drink soda water but that would feel boring and dull!

mnnewbie111 · 04/04/2022 06:32

Judgey

MrsDThomas · 04/04/2022 06:44

I love a drink in the evening. Red, white, gin, vodka.

I work hard, exercise, lead a healthy lifestyle and I rarely go out. Dont smoke and never been stupid enough to do drugs.

I haven’t been drunk for 21 years. Its fab!

Its “my” thing. Feet up and one drink.

Life is fucking miserable for many, and £6 for a bottle of wine which lasts me 3 nights, well …..

Nutellaonall · 04/04/2022 06:52

I am very much a social drinker. Never drink a
At home In The evening. DH doesn’t either. Just makes me sleepy. Would always choose chocolate or ice cream as my evening treat. Guess we all hav our vice. Sugar isn’t good either.

Because my head is constantly buzzing with 185729485 tabs open and it's the only thing that makes it shut the fuck up for an hour or two.

Same here 💕

I think people are more confused about your point that you don’t like wine, and so you can’t understand why people drink it.

I don’t like tea or coffee, but I wouldn’t ask “why do people drink it? To me it tastes horrible!”

Whattodoniw · 04/04/2022 07:00
@MoonriseKingdom I’m quite jealous, that sounds enjoyable and I bet your nights out are lovely and cheap!

@DaisyStPatience 😂😂

@Icantfly The only time I tried to get properly drunk from wine it took me 9 whole bottles! I’m surprised at the tolerance thing, I assumed that people who drank regularly would always have a higher tolerance. Good to know!
9 bottles to get you fully pissed?

Fuck me.

😳😳😳😳

lightnesspixie · 04/04/2022 07:08

Wine is an acquired taste. No one likes the taste initially. A bit like coffee which in fact is bitter. You come to associate it with nice things like a tasty meal and good conversation so after a time you also look forward to that feeling of relaxation it gives you.

PersephonePomegranate · 04/04/2022 07:11

What do you enjoy eating or drinking that you really like the taste of and makes you feel like you've had a treat?

That's all it is.

One glass doesn't make me feel groggy as long as I'm hydrated before I drink it and drink water before bed.

MrsGHarrison87 · 04/04/2022 07:14

I like the taste and a glass relaxes me. I don't drink every night. Maybe 1 out of 2 weekends I'll drink a full bottle while my husband has a couple of ciders and we'll stay up late, listen to music and talk. It's our way of having a bit of fun while we're not able to go out that much. I do get a bit drunk but I'm not out of control and I enjoy the happy relaxed feeling.

Polyanthus2 · 04/04/2022 07:17

It's for the effect it has on my brain - makes me feel in a great mood and very positive about life, the future everything. Also relaxes me.

Unfortunately it has negative effects the more you drink.

I think the effect it has on you has a genetic component. Hence the reason Scots/ Irish/ Scandinavians drink more than most.

SavBbunny · 04/04/2022 07:18

I love wine OP but it has made me ill in so many ways.
If you have no desire for it stop trying to like it!
It is as addictive as glass A drugs. Since going AF I have lost friends because it shines a light on other's drinking habits.
Personally I don't like the taste of coffee but love my cups of tea.

Sisisimone · 04/04/2022 07:19

Right so you were a poor student and thought it would be better to drink 9 x bottles of low alcohol wine at a tenner a pop rather than 1 or 2 normal strength bottles at a fiver a pop? That just doesnt make any sense. At all. Hope you weren't studying Maths! Did you actually have 9 bottles of that stuff in the house, just in case?

Look, noone really drinks in the house in their teens and twenties unless they're at a party. At that age most people are out in bars and clubs. As you get older and you have responsibilities and families you mature (hopefully) and your tastes mature as well. At 19 I'd have been as bored as fuck to sit in the house with a nice glass of Barolo but in my 40s after a long day of work and ferrying kids around its a different story. Just as enjoyable but different.
