Why do some people drink in the evenings?

Something I’ve always been curious about really, but never bothered asking because it’s none of my business😂 But I’ve been seeing people post about it so much recently and it’s piqued my curiosity once again. I’m hoping that somebody could please explain the appeal to me?

To me wine doesn’t taste particularly nice, even the good ones. It costs a lot if you want one that’s not grim, it’s full of calories, it’s not great for health and one or two glasses won’t do much more than make you feel a bit groggy and headachey. I do drink socially and enjoy it, but if I only end up having one or two I stay sober and just feel a bit crap and my mood just gets dragged down a bit.

What is it I’m missing? Is it really just code for actually drinking a full bottle or two and having a one man party every night? Do some people actually love the taste, or get some kind of good effect from a small amount? Honestly dying to know😂

Stress. I rarely drink now - maybe a glass of wine every month - but when I had a stressful job I needed a glass every night to help me relax.

Sisisimone · 04/04/2022 00:07

it’s enlightening to hear that some people do. That helps it make more sense
Do you mean to say that it's never occurred to you that the millions of people who buy wine around the world actually like the taste if it? You actually feel enlightened to discover this? Yeah, OK then 🤣🤣

ThatOneTime · 04/04/2022 00:07

@Sisisimone

I’ve never met anybody who actually enjoys the taste of wine I dont believe you. Unless you're about 12 years old or something.
Cheer up, no need to be so unpleasant.

I'm a little surprised you haven't met anybody who likes the taste of wine OP.
I like the taste and so does everyone else I know who drinks wine.
Otherwise why would we bother?

Sisisimone · 04/04/2022 00:14

Not being unpleasant ThatOneTime. Just find it very difficult to believe that any adult has never in their life met anyone that enjoys the taste of wine. Unless you have a very very small social circle

ThatOneTime · 04/04/2022 00:16

@MoonriseKingdom I’m quite jealous, that sounds enjoyable and I bet your nights out are lovely and cheap!

@DaisyStPatience 😂😂

@Icantfly The only time I tried to get properly drunk from wine it took me 9 whole bottles! I’m surprised at the tolerance thing, I assumed that people who drank regularly would always have a higher tolerance. Good to know!

I love a glass or two in the evening but am currently breastfeeding so don't. I don't particularly like red, but fine with white and will happily drink a bottle of rose. If my husband drinks (red) then he always has a whole bottle, sometimes two.

Yeah course it did 🙄Grin

Strokethefurrywall · 04/04/2022 00:28

Haha 9 whole bottles? Right-o...

ThatOneTime · 04/04/2022 00:31

@backtobusy that’s what had me so confused🙂 Honestly everybody that I know just tolerates the taste in order to get day drunk because it’s cheap when you’re on a student budget. I’m 25 so only finished Uni 2 years ago and most of my friends are still out drinking cocktails at bars on weekends rather than drinking at home, and none of my family have ever drunk at home either so it could be that.

Let me guess, the wine was called Eisberg Grin
Enjoy your half term OP

ThatOneTime · 04/04/2022 00:40

@Strokethefurrywall by that I mean absolutely falling down bladdered, obviously😂

Was it 9 of these?

Why do some people drink in the evenings?
Nancydrawn · 04/04/2022 00:59

I love the taste of wine, particularly (although not exclusively) good wine.

The point of drinking isn't to get wasted. There are cheaper, safer ways to do that. The point is to enjoy yourself.

thecatsinthecradle · 04/04/2022 00:59

"Alcohol tolerance is very varied, a woman I work with drinks a cocktail, 2 bottles of wine and a brandy every night and she doesn’t feel drunk, before I met her I would’ve assumed anyone would be falling down drunk after all that!"

Christ how is she still alive??!!

I'm on a bit of an accidental sobriety journey and I'm loving it.
In my 20's I drank mostly socially but I bought a house at 24 and married fairly young at 27 so home drinking was definitely common for me.

In my 30's, my DH and I drank a lot. Many weeks we drank Wednesday through to Sunday without a second thought.
A bottle of wine each per night and more in a Friday / Saturday. I loved it. I loved relaxing with wine and a Chinese, or with crisps and chocolate, watching a movie or a comedy show.

I was in my third pregnancy at 38 and obviously stopped drinking again. When the baby was born, weeks went by and I didn't think about it.

I turned 40 at the end of last year so picked up the pace a bit around the celebrations then again at Christmas... but it was no more than a bottle of wine once a week.

I found myself missing the mental clarity which sobriety gave me so I haven't drank for a number of weeks now. I feel so much better for it. More present with the kids, more patient, motivated etc. I find myself asking why anyone would put poison in their body to make themselves feel like shit. The anxiety, fear, palpitations just aren't worth it.

thecatsinthecradle · 04/04/2022 01:02

Hang on... 9 bottles... you're having a laugh OP

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 04/04/2022 01:08

Why do some people have coffee,
Why do some have tea,
Why do some have chocolate etc?
Because they like it.
9 bottles??? 🤯

9 75cl bottles of wine at 5.5 abv is equivalent to about 13/14 pints of lager at 4.5 abv. I don’t think there’s anything particularly shocking about that amount, spread over a whole day ‘til about 4am?

I have a drink in the morning after a night shift, helps me sleep.

HellToTheNope · 04/04/2022 01:22
Confused
rubydoobydoo · 04/04/2022 01:29

Most wines have at least double that alcohol percentage.

I'm not keen on wine but I do like a glass of whiskey or rum in the winter - warms me up and relaxes me at the same time!

rocksonrocks · 04/04/2022 01:36

Christ, someone best tell the millions of acres of vineyards across the globe that no one actually enjoys the taste of wine.

I drink roughly one bottle a week, sometimes that’s one glass over a few evening and sometimes it’s three glasses on a Friday night. Never do I drink beyond the point of feeling “relaxed” because I don’t drink it to get tipsy or drunk.

Good wine is delicious and a luxury to drink which is why people who actually appreciate it are able to do so at leisure in their own homes.

You should read This Naked Mind.

rocksonrocks · 04/04/2022 01:38

Oh and as far as it being unhealthy…look at the French/Italians/Mediterranean populations who drink wine for breakfast and live well into their 90s.

Read up on the benefits of red wine in particular, some even suggest it’s good for you Wink

What on earth are you talking about?

A 750ml bottle of red, white or rosé wine (ABV 13.5%) contains 10 units.
So 9 bottles is 90 units. You would be dead.
