Do you feed family garlic based dishes without considering the after smell the next day?

Is this something other people consider at all? Say you have tweens or teens who are at an age where peers may notice things like garlic breath. Do you consider this at all and say not feed garlic bread night before school or if they are going to a party or something. Or do most people not give it a second thought? Just curious as it’s something I tend to avoid garlic if working next day but maybe I over worry

I never (well, very rarely) smell it anyone now and vaguely remember reading on here that it had been cultivated to no longer smell as much. It wouldn't cross my mind to avoid it though.

Grumpasaurusrex · 03/04/2022 19:21

I eat garlic constantly and feed as much as often to my family as possible because it's extraordinarily healthy. I just brush my teeth?

Climbingthelaundrymountain · 03/04/2022 19:23

No I haven't ever considered it. Dcs have never commented either. And their breath never smells.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/04/2022 19:26

I'd rather the smell of garlic than someone with coffee breath! I had a manager who stank of the stuff and it was vile. I used to feel sick every time he spoke to me.

latriciamcneal · 03/04/2022 19:26

Yeah. Garlic is delicious and really good for you so we eat it in abundance, every day, and we only hang around with other people who do the same.

Cstring · 03/04/2022 19:28

Yes I do consider thus, as I work quite closely to others, and the day 2 smell can be quite unpleasant when I smell it in others. I’d never dream of mentioning it to anyone though.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 03/04/2022 19:28

@OkPedro

Not bizzare at all! My children reek of garlic after they've spent the weekend with their Dad. They brush their teeth and use mouth wash before bed but when I wake my son the next morning for school his room stinks! It's like smelly socks..awful
It might be me, I have never felt that resemblance between the fragrance of smelly socks and garlic 🤔 some types of cheese, yes but garlic? No

Also flabbergasted at people's rude colleagues commenting "you had garlic yesterday" or "I thought you were an alcoholic until I realised I could smell your mouthwash". I mean how close do your colleagues get to you ? Grin unless you were snogging or something, each to their own

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 03/04/2022 19:28

See I think it depends on the person if it’s noticeable - I can smell garlic on my skin after I’ve eaten it.

I like garlic and I still eat it. But yes I can definitely smell it on my skin so brushing my teeth won’t help.

BertieBotts · 03/04/2022 19:31

I feel like this is a concern from the 1970s when everyone ate meat and two veg and garlic was something incredibly exotic :o

No, I have never thought about it, never noticed anyone smelling of garlic, don't even think garlic is an unpleasant smell. Have always been bemused by the idea that it is.

BertieBotts · 03/04/2022 19:32

It definitely does give your sweat a smell, same as some curry spices. But unless you're sniffing someone's armpit you probably wouldn't notice.

Titsywoo · 03/04/2022 19:34

I can always smell it on others the next day - people do realise that it doesn't smell like actual garlic though right? More of a distinctive musty smell.

bellac11 · 03/04/2022 19:39

Our diet does influence how we smell as humans.

I thought I read somewhere that people in China and Japan think that the British smell very suphuric because of our love of dairy.

Right? I am in London and the majority of people I work with and hang out with are smelly garlic or ginger eaters.:) Not by design, just by multiculturism!

I wonder if people refrain from eating smelly French cheeses for the same reason.

Greyhare · 03/04/2022 19:53

@HellToTheNope

We eat loads of garlic almost every day and have never smelled of it.
You do but you just don't smell it like smokers can't smell that they smell of smoke.
RoyKentsChestHair · 03/04/2022 20:00

I spent 9 years being paranoid about garlic breath while I was with XDP. We didn’t live together so I’d only eat it if I wasn’t seeing him the next day. I know it didn’t cross his mind as he’d often turn up having had Thai food or curry etc the night before and I could smell it on his breath. Not totally unpleasant but definitely noticeable. He always said how nice I smelled Grin. If we were having eg kebabs with garlic mayo we’d both make sure to have the same thing.

I wouldn’t worry about it in a non intimate setting like regular work or school, but if the DCs had a hot date or something I’d be conscious of not giving them kievs or garlic bread etc the night before.

TheNameOfTheRoses · 03/04/2022 20:03

@Greyhare I don’t think so.

The reason why I don’t think people can smell it is because

  • if this was the case, you could smell it in every single person in Italy, south of France etc etc.. and you don’t
  • no one has ever made a comment on it. Not to me and not to any of my dcs. If it was that obvious, I’m pretty sure that they would have been told, with them Being teenagers etc….
  • many people use garlic in their cooking traditionally. Unless you are also saying that every single asian person, for example, you’ve met smells etc… then it doesn’t hold.
TheNameOfTheRoses · 03/04/2022 20:05

Hmm… this is not something I’ve ever thought about with Dc1.
They’ve never been told that their breath/skin was smelly by their gf…….

Greyhare · 03/04/2022 20:14

But if they all eat garlic then they won't smell it either, I don't eat garlic* as it does not agree with me, and I can usually smell it on people, one of my nieces absolutely reeks of it as she eats bucket loads of garlic bread.
  • I don't reek of fabric conditioner either as I find most way too pungent, I'm a Ecover Appleblosom and Almond girl, which barely has a fragrance.
Wutipg · 03/04/2022 20:17

Very interesting to read these replies. I am obviously not the only one but in the minority. My dh thinks I am utterly ridiculous so I guess most of you agree with him. I do love lots of other spices though. Cumin and paprika I love in particular. I find garlic a bit overwhelming to be honest. And it drives me mad when it is put in packets of ham etc as I just feel it’s not necessary flavouring have in everything

SniffMyQuiffyHair · 03/04/2022 20:24

I can smell it on people the day after, makes me feel ill
The only way you won't smell it is if you have eaten it yourself

SpringHasSprungYay · 03/04/2022 20:26

@TheSpottedZebra

My theory is that people who are mimsy about garlic smell normally reek of fabric softener, so it all evens out.
🤣🤣🤣
NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/04/2022 20:43

@Rummikub

Such as?

What’s better than garlic?

Chilli and garlic, not forgetting the salt.

Can't be doing with this complete lack of seasoning or aromatics.

Rummikub · 03/04/2022 20:54

Oh I see

I thought you meant an ingredient instead of garlic

Of course I use a whole range of spices.
Much more than just chilli and garlic and ginger..

bellac11 · 03/04/2022 20:55

Garlic is a veggie, not a spice by the way

We eat it as a veggie too, roast it in the oven

Rummikub · 03/04/2022 20:56

Roasted garlic bulb is delicious
