Do you feed family garlic based dishes without considering the after smell the next day?

Is this something other people consider at all? Say you have tweens or teens who are at an age where peers may notice things like garlic breath. Do you consider this at all and say not feed garlic bread night before school or if they are going to a party or something. Or do most people not give it a second thought? Just curious as it’s something I tend to avoid garlic if working next day but maybe I over worry

I’ve been told by colleagues at work that they know I had garlic the night before Blush so I always consider this, although I think a tiny bit is not going to hurt. I love garlic! I did eat it raw once and even I could smell it on me DAYS afterwards. I actually took a day off work due to this as was so embarrassed!

SilverGlitterBaubles · 03/04/2022 16:56

We have garlic in so many dishes and I have never given it a second thought. I would be more concerned about your own overthinking giving kids unnecessary anxiety over food and what people might think of how they look or smell.

Wutipg · 03/04/2022 17:05

I haven’t really mentioned to the kids so hopefully not passing on my worries. Just needed to check if they are normal. As a child we once gave a family friend a lift in our car (an adult not a child) and I remember him smelling so bad of garlic I struggled to breath it was so horrible. So that experience obviously stayed with me.

Admittedly I don’t notice it on other people these days

I think we have garlic in the majority of meals really so maybe we smell all the time? I honestly don't think it's a big deal and if you did smell of garlic it's not exactly a bad smell, is it?

WhiteCatmas · 03/04/2022 17:12

You are over thinking OP, go outside.

TabithaTittlemouse · 03/04/2022 17:12

@TheSpottedZebra

My theory is that people who are mimsy about garlic smell normally reek of fabric softener, so it all evens out.
Came to say this.

We could with garlic most days.

justasking111 · 03/04/2022 17:13

I have the eye clinic twice a year the consultant I had for a while reeked of garlic and spices not great when you're the other side of the machine. It's better with the masks these days. When OH goes out for a curry night with the lads breathing all over me in bed isn't great.

Otherwise I don't notice it

Wutipg · 03/04/2022 17:14

I also remember peers at school worrying about it. One girl used to always tell everyone that even if you brush your teeth, it literally comes out your pores 🤪

To be honest, I absolutely detest the stuff - apart from the Queen I don't know anyone like me - so certainly never eat anything with garlic (Boak!)
However, I very, very rarely notice it on people nowadays.
It's a bigger problem trying to avoid it these days! 🤮🤮🤮

Bloodybridget · 03/04/2022 17:16

We eat garlic a lot, v rarely notice a strong smell from anyone but I was on a bus a few weeks ago sitting near someone who reeked of it, perhaps they had eaten it raw.

Youvebeengonesolong · 03/04/2022 17:18

It might be something I would consider if I was an optometrist or a beauty therapist or something but not for an ordinary desk job or day at school, no I wouldn't. Frankly I would much rather have someone reek of garlic than cheap artificial scent.

scrivette · 03/04/2022 17:18

I do consider it sometimes. This morning my DS mentioned that his brothers breath smelt and they had both eaten strong garlic bread the evening before.

FIL claims we all sweat garlic, and my Dad laughed that our baby was the first toddler he'd ever met with garlic breath! DS1 really loved garlic bread when he was tiny. FIL never eat garlic and Dad used it very sparingly - even so, it didn't bother him, it just amused him.

A fair amount of garlic goes into pretty much everything we eat. I never give it a thought.

Crazyforcavies · 03/04/2022 17:22

Yes, I'm mindful of it. DH can smell it on me if I've had garlic and he hasn't, and he has a dreadful sense of smell, so it must be strong. I'm a wedding celebrant and make sure I never have garlic the day before a ceremony!

StColumbofNavron · 03/04/2022 17:23

There is garlic in every single thing we cook in this house, so I have never thought about it at all.

dollydimple123 · 03/04/2022 17:23

I ate garlic bread the night before my wedding!

GameofPhones · 03/04/2022 17:24

The only time I have smelled garlic on anyone was in France, standing next to a man in a lift. It was pretty overwhelming, but I have never experienced anything like it since. For this effect, possibly the garlic has to have been eaten raw, and for smeller and smellee to be together in a closed space.

LegMeChicken · 03/04/2022 17:26

@ClumpingBambooIsALie

I wonder if maybe we could become more tolerant of the ordinary smells of living. So what if someone smells of cooking oil or curry spices or garlic? Everyone smells of something, and as long as it's not truly stomach-turning or a sign of neglect, like bad BO or overwhelming perfume or piss/shit, then it's just one of those things.
Erm no, not everyone 'smells of' something. And I have a nose like a bloodhound, I know people's stuff by smell. Most people just smell human.
Wouldntitbenicetobeinyourshoes · 03/04/2022 17:29

You can smell garlic on people the next day.

I like garlic, I have it so strong i could probably strip paint with my breath the next day. I did once had an optician rush through my appointment the next day Blush

I’ve also had people say ‘sorry if I smell of garlic, hope it’s not too strong ha ha’ whilst the fumes are almost enough to make my eyes water! I used to not eat garlic if I had work the next day as I have to be quite close to people but now I don’t care, I’ll eat what I want.

Vapeyvapevape · 03/04/2022 17:31

I can smell when my colleague has had garlic and am mindful of eating anything really garlicky when going into the office. I find microwave meals the worse for the day after smell.

Chewbecca · 03/04/2022 17:34

This was definitely a thing when I was at school but isn’t anymore.

I don’t know why that might be, could be that the stink has been bred out of today’s garlic, could be that we eat so much of it now compared to in the 70s/80s that we have become immune to smelling it. Or something else?!

maddiemookins16mum · 03/04/2022 17:34

I’ve been using garlic for the 35 years I’ve been cooking meals - I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve smelt it on people.
Maybe I’m garlic noseblind.
Tonight we have lemon and garlic chicken (I must have stuck 6 big cloves inside the cavity) and homemade dolphin nose potatoes (again 3 minced cloves in the mix).
I haven’t given it a second thought.

ClumpingBambooIsALie · 03/04/2022 17:36

Most people just smell human.

That's something.

DisforDarkChocolate · 03/04/2022 17:39

I never think about this. I do make sure my husband eats garlic in the same meal as me though so he isn't put off my garlic breath if I feel like sex later.

I always carry mints too.
