Do you feed family garlic based dishes without considering the after smell the next day?

Is this something other people consider at all? Say you have tweens or teens who are at an age where peers may notice things like garlic breath. Do you consider this at all and say not feed garlic bread night before school or if they are going to a party or something. Or do most people not give it a second thought? Just curious as it’s something I tend to avoid garlic if working next day but maybe I over worry

I can't say I've even noticed a smell the day after eating raw garlic. If you brush your teeth properly twice a day then fresh garlic shouldn't cause your breathe the smell the following day. As for cooked garlic, I wouldn't give it a second thought.
I also can't say I get close enough to anyone that isn't family or closest friends for my breathe to be smelled either. You would literally have to hovering over someone and this isn't something I make a regular habit of, even more so with Covid doing the rounds.

@Shostaklovhich

I’ve been told by colleagues at work that they know I had garlic the night before Blush so I always consider this, although I think a tiny bit is not going to hurt. I love garlic! I did eat it raw once and even I could smell it on me DAYS afterwards. I actually took a day off work due to this as was so embarrassed!
Same here, I don't eat garlic if I'm in work the following day! I can smell it on other people as well.
waterlego · 03/04/2022 18:36

I use garlic in probably about 90% of the meals I cook and have never given any consideration to whether any of us smell of it the next day. If we do, so be it. We all love garlic and I believe it’s good for you so I won’t be changing anything.

JanisMoplin · 03/04/2022 18:37

@Rummikub It's this. www.redrickshaw.com/products/natco-mango-powder-amchoor-jar-100g?variant=7096883511344&gclid=CjwKCAjwi6WSBhA-EiwA6Niok9RgTuitGbgpbiYO5ciwKSLHFNgaSwbH7eYyx76W3njsN3Qzb4NyBxoCEJsQAvD_BwE

It adds a tangy, sweet sour flavour. I usually use it in my okra stirfry, dahl and you could also use it with meat.

In re some posts, I myself do not like the smell of meat, fish or a roast dinner ( because we do not eat meat). When I was in the office, I often found the smell of tuna or ham sandwiches hard to take. I "put up" with it though because surely being part of a multicultural society means developing a tolerance for different food habits.

TheNumberfaker · 03/04/2022 18:38

Never crossed my mind at all.

TheNameOfTheRoses · 03/04/2022 18:38

We seat garlic more or less everyday.
We also use A LOT of garlic.

I have never noticed any difference in smell, nor have my teens ever made any comments around that.
If that was the case, most people around the Med would be smelly which they aren’t.

I think that stuff about the smell is more in people’s head than anything else tbh.

knittingaddict · 03/04/2022 18:40

Never considered it. I use a lot of garlic in cooking and wouldn't change that.

AuntieMarys · 03/04/2022 18:41

I cook with garlic every day. Don't give it a second thought

Suzi888 · 03/04/2022 18:41

There is second day garlic breath. Yes I would consider it and pack gum!

Rummikub · 03/04/2022 18:42

@JanisMoplin

Thank you for that
My mouth is watering at the thought

Qwill · 03/04/2022 18:43

Nearly every meal in our house starts with chopped onion and garlic. Never been an issue. Maybe we’re immune now to the garlic smell!

mumofEandE · 03/04/2022 18:46

@maddiemookins16mum

I’ve been using garlic for the 35 years I’ve been cooking meals - I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve smelt it on people. Maybe I’m garlic noseblind. Tonight we have lemon and garlic chicken (I must have stuck 6 big cloves inside the cavity) and homemade dolphin nose potatoes (again 3 minced cloves in the mix). I haven’t given it a second thought.
Dolphin nose potatoes Grin
Vapeyvapevape · 03/04/2022 18:48

Dolphin nose potatoes

That's what we call them !

Ballcactus · 03/04/2022 18:49

I’m really sensitive to all good smells but that’s hyperemesis survival not something the average person notices usually

Ballcactus · 03/04/2022 18:49

Food smells! Not good smells

Vapeyvapevape · 03/04/2022 18:50

I think ginger smells strongly, Can definitely smell it on peoples clothes.

NotAScoobyToBeSeen · 03/04/2022 18:52

Im allergic to garlic, so much so that I can react even after just smelling garlic so yeah I do notice it on some people. And no I dont just eat flavourless food Grin

Undertheoldlindentree · 03/04/2022 18:53

@TheSpottedZebra

My theory is that people who are mimsy about garlic smell normally reek of fabric softener, so it all evens out.
Best observation of the year so far! Grin
Mossstitch · 03/04/2022 18:54

I don't think a couple of cloves in cooking matters but........ OMG those vegetarian hotdogs my kids used to love when little, open their bedroom door next day and it stank! Plus kisses from little one were difficult to take but I'm a good actor 💋😂 he's grown up now and if he's been out with friends for Indian or Thai food I feel like sealing his bedroom door😜 but I'm a very plain eater. Wouldn't dream of telling them though and spoiling their enjoyment🤷

ChooChoo12 · 03/04/2022 18:55

I’d always consider upcoming events, people my family and I will be around before cooking with garlic! The people I’ve just asked (non family members) at this party all agree! There’s about 10 of us here now.
Another common response is if people cook with garlic often… they need to re look at their dishes as there are better ingredients than always using and eating ‘garlic’ Grin

Rummikub · 03/04/2022 19:00

Such as?

What’s better than garlic?

tigerbird · 03/04/2022 19:04

I can smell it on other people (and on me!) for a couple of days! - but then I’ve got a pretty sensitive sense of smell. I used to avoid it before days I knew I’d be in a lot of meetings or presenting something or doing public speaking.

Have enjoyed not having to think about avoiding garlicky or spicy things during the week during the time I’ve been working from home the last two years!

bellac11 · 03/04/2022 19:06

All my meals start with a basis of garlic. If I eat a 'ready meal' of some sort it will have garlic in it

For example, tonights tea is a stuffed mushroom with cheese and garlic and baked beans.

My breakfast every day is dhal, which has a base mixed in with it, which is made from onions, spices and garlic.

beautifullymad · 03/04/2022 19:09

@SockQueen

Never think about it. I/they would have brushed teeth twice and probably had at least one more meal since then, so it's extremely unlikely to be noticeable the following day.
Garlic isn't on the breath though. It's excreted through the pores. It's the chemical compound allicin that's excreted and can be particularly pungent.
Ratatoo · 03/04/2022 19:16

I do. If they're going to the dentist or something. I hate the smell of garlic the next day but do like the flavour.

You can't smell it on someone if you smell of it yourself, it's weird like that Grin
