Anyone want to chat about ice cream? Particularly fruit versus chocolate

I wanted some strawberry ice cream when I was in a big Sainsbury's but all they had was either a dreadful looking whipped 'viennetta' type thing or a multi pack of tubs containing one tub of strawberry.

Meanwhile every single conceivable variation on chocolate/caramel/salted caramel/chocolate cookie/double fudge etc filled almost the entire freezer.

Do people not really like strawberry ice cream any more? I do love chocolate flavours but I'd like the choice.

Also, is lemon ice cream a thing? Not sorbet, actual ice cream? I've had a craving for that lately too but I'm not sure it exists.

Sadly I think it is the Ben and Jerry's influence. There are so many tubs of chocolatey flavours, and then add in the cookie dough etc as well.

I love fruit ice-creams but now tend to save it until I'm on holiday for that reason - loads of fruit flavours in S of France and Italy... I don't think lemon icecream is a thing, but it should be. Perhaps one to make?

Lidl do a great strawberry ice cream

AHungryCaterpillar · 01/04/2022 12:27

I’m with you, I hate chocolate ice cream and all the other similar ones.

I wish they sold lemon ice cream like you get in the ice cream van, I have always wondered why they don’t sell lemon it’s the best one! But everything is chocolate/salted caramel/cookie dough

I’ve also noticed that when ben and Jerry’s make new flavours they are all still pretty much the same thing just the same usual caramel/chocolate/brownie but in a different order 😂

GlisteningGoldGrasses · 01/04/2022 12:30

Ooh yes I prefer fruit ice cream too. I once had apple ice cream in Germany that was so wonderful. I also had an amazing rich blackcurrant clotted cream ice cream once in Cornwall as a child that I still dream of. I've had lemon meringue ice cream at a gelato place which was amazing too, the lemon ice creams I've had tend to be those creamy lemon flavours like lemon cheesecake/lemon meringue/lemon curd. Really hard to find in supermarkets though

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 01/04/2022 12:30

I hear you.

I've only had lemon ice cream in Italy. M&S do orange ice cream sticks which are glorious, although chocolate coated - I would prefer if the were just the orange ice cream.

Tesco do a good cherry ripple, but they are a bit tight with the ripple.

MorrisZapp · 01/04/2022 12:30

Ooh good shout re Lidl. My local Italian parlour does a glorious strawberry too, but it's a very expensive treat and I'd like the option of chucking decent ice cream in my shopping trolley too.

Lemon ice-cream is definitely a thing but I've only found it in independent ice-cream shops to put in cones/tubs.
I prefer fruit flavours. A local place to us does amazing apple pie ice-cream and I had a lovely sharp margarita flavoured one in Mexico.

BowerOfBramble · 01/04/2022 12:32

I love orange ice cream. Why has it never caught on? Also raspberry ice cream used to be around and now isn't.

AHungryCaterpillar · 01/04/2022 12:32

Ice cream vans do all flavours so why can’t they have them in shops? My kids get apple, lemon, cherry, strawberry, bubblegum 😋

MorrisZapp · 01/04/2022 12:32

Cherry! I'd never even thought of that. A whole new craving :)

I wish you could buy soft serve ice cream at the supermarket- the type you get from an ice cream van, a Mr Whippy

ZittiEBuoni · 01/04/2022 12:35

We have 2 fancy gelato shops in our town (seaside resort) that do amazing fruit flavours - Sicilian orange and lemon springs to mind, but also lots of blackcurrant, cherry, spiced pear etc. Hurry up and warm up, weather, so I can sit on the harbour wall with one.

Ylvamoon · 01/04/2022 12:36

I don't like strawberry ice cream.... And most ice cream available in the UK is grim by my high ranking gelato standards!

But give me a scoop of just plain chocolate and scoop of lemon gelato ice cream *. Heaven!

*yes it is a thing!

Herja · 01/04/2022 12:38

I buy blackcurrant and clotted cream ice cream as a treat in the park. Had an amazing goosberry ice cream in Weynouth last year. Aldi used to do a lemon meringue ice cream that was lovely too (it reappears in summer sometimes, I am always hopeful! They used to do an amazing cherry one that I miss hugely).

I don't like chocolate ice cream. Like chocolate, but chocolate ice cream just tastes of disappointment: not nice chocolate or nice ice cream. Just a nuce name and appearance.

iklboo · 01/04/2022 12:38

I agree. I abhor chocolate ice cream. I like raspberry, strawberry, pistachio, blackcurrant etc. I'm going to Rome with my auntie in September & you better believe I'm hammering the gelato! 😄

Laiste · 01/04/2022 12:39

I only have one thing to say in relation to ice cream

CHERRY GARCIA

MarianosOnHisWay · 01/04/2022 12:40

Pistachio

Laiste · 01/04/2022 12:40

and, actually, you're right OP about 'normal' flavours missing at the mo.

I looked for a tub of neopolitan last week for me and DD (8) to sit and share while we watch a disney film. (our little treat) and i couldn't find one in our massive Tesco! :(

Justkeeppedaling · 01/04/2022 12:43

Fact - coffee ice cream is the best ice cream. Closely followed by pistachio, praline, honeycomb and then chocolate. Mint choc chip is on my list, but a bit lower down.

TibetanTerrah · 01/04/2022 12:44

Strawberry ice cream was the one always ignored when I was a kid in the tub of neopolitan Grin

I've yet to find a decent pistachio in a UK supermarket that doesn't cost a fortune and doesnt have a weird aftertaste Sad

Ben and jerrys peanut butter ice cream and their chocolate and banana one were amazing but at least one has been discontinued!

Salted caramel can fuck off Grin

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 01/04/2022 12:45

I don't like fruit or chocolate flavoured ice cream.

I like stem ginger, coffee, butterscotch, salted caramel or peanut butter flavours.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/04/2022 12:49

I now have a craving to visit a proper German Eiscafe. More flavours that you can shake a stick at, elaborate sundaes, apple strudel, spaghettieis..

Rather dangerously an ice cream shop is due to open 100m from our house.

WellTidy · 01/04/2022 12:50

The best ice cream I’ve ever had was in Lisbon - fig and almond. I am forever chasing it.

My favourite shop bought ice cream is haagen daaz strawberry cheesecake.

I’d rather have no ice cream at all than chocolate ice cream and I LOVE chocolate, from Cadburys to charbonnel et walker.

LadyLothbrook · 01/04/2022 12:53

@Laiste I concur. I'm still not over it being discontinued.
