Car's been stolen- I know where it is!

Just wondered if anyone had been through this?

My car's been nicked. I have a tracker in it and located it at an address about half an hour away. I drove round and it's there!

Tried to start it but I wouldn't recognise my electronic key.

Reported it to 101 but they have said that there is nothing the police can do- I need to get my insurer to collect it and fix whatever has been changed. Currently on hold to the insurer.

Just wondered if anyone had been through this?

Op change your user name to #MissMarple

SalomeNotThatOne · 31/03/2022 18:36

It’s on the public road. Unlikely to be the criminal’s address apparently.

Have had a call back from the Met to say they’re closing the case. Shout out to the boys in blue!

Sorry to derail the thread but…. Do Apple air tags work at distances then? I thought they only worked if you were nearby?

Footballsundays6777 · 31/03/2022 18:46

That’s horrendous!! How was it stolen? Burg?

Cstring · 31/03/2022 18:46

Definitely take it to social media… ask them why they aren’t even the least bit arsed about the THEFT of a car.

Cstring · 31/03/2022 18:47

Sorry about the caps - I’m annoyed for you.

SalomeNotThatOne · 31/03/2022 18:48

They work with Bluetooth, but as long as they are within Bluetooth range of any iPhone they will appear on your FindMyIphone, even if they are miles away. Works v well here in London where there are lots of people and lots of phones.

It doesn’t have to be your phone nearby, they use iPhones in general.

How does it work? Your AirTag sends out a secure Bluetooth signal that can be detected by nearby devices in the Find My network. These devices send the location of your AirTag to iCloud — then you can go to the Find My app and see it on a map. The whole process is anonymous and encrypted to protect your privacy.

I know someone who had their work van smashed up, the police wouldn’t even come out and told the guy the same thing, can’t do anything about it, just call your insurance company, I thought that they were there to deal with crime, apparently not.

Wow! Aren't they efficient?
(Am also wondering about the airtag radius...)

ThingsThatMakeYouGoHmmmmmmmmm · 31/03/2022 18:54

I do hope all the ' call 101 and get it logged ' idiots are reading this.

OldTinHat · 31/03/2022 18:58

Yes, happened to me. Phoned the police to report it stolen and they told me where it was and to go and collect it. Went to get it, it had no wheels! It had been stolen for the alloys.

Apparently it had been dumped outside a holiday resort during the night, security reported it to the police and at that time it still had wheels.

The police had no interest. I had to contact my insurers to get it recovered and the wheels replaced.

Infuriating, isn't it OP? Especially when you see these 999 police shows when they go chasing after a stolen car.

Frazzled2207 · 31/03/2022 18:58

Wow lucky you tracked it down and hopefully insurers can sort something out

I’m going to look at an apple airtag cos clearly was very useful here

NdefH81 · 31/03/2022 19:01

An insurer is sending an employee to collect a car that has been stolen not having any idea whether the criminal is around; the car parked outside house; indeed nothing

Seriously?

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 31/03/2022 19:02

@Pluvia

Yes, tie a threatening suffragette ribbon on one of the wing mirrors. The police will be along shortly.

mrsmolks · 31/03/2022 19:03

I would tow it away

Shade17 · 31/03/2022 19:04

If they are it will still show as you the owner on the DVLA website

The DVLA don’t know (or care) who owns a particular car.

NdefH81 · 31/03/2022 19:05

@mrsmolks

I would tow it away
Do you understand the logistics involved in that? Grin

What does this mean?
Babdoc · 31/03/2022 19:13

It means the police are much keener on arresting women for wrong think and “hate crimes” than chasing actual thieves and crooks. The suffragette ribbons represent gender critical feminists, who don’t want men in women’s sports, changing rooms, refuges or prisons.

Lavenderlid · 31/03/2022 19:15

It means the police have recently become known for having plenty of time to investigate thought crimes and "correct the thinking" of women who think other women sometimes need single sex spaces. Basically.

I don't think they'll be sending an actual employee around - rather a recovery company!
CapMarvel · 31/03/2022 19:18

I'm sorry, what? Your car has been nicked, you've found it and the police are claiming there is nothing they can do?

What the actual fuck.

Oh, it's the met. Well, that partially explains it, too busy eating donuts at number 10.

RishiRich · 31/03/2022 19:29

That's rubbish of the Met. O hope the insurer can sort it out!

carefullycourageous · 31/03/2022 19:31

@thedancingbear

The Met, eh? Probably too busy humiliating black children.

Same old same old.

Quite.

I am so sick of the Met Angry
