Car's been stolen- I know where it is!

Just wondered if anyone had been through this?

My car's been nicked. I have a tracker in it and located it at an address about half an hour away. I drove round and it's there!

Tried to start it but I wouldn't recognise my electronic key.

Reported it to 101 but they have said that there is nothing the police can do- I need to get my insurer to collect it and fix whatever has been changed. Currently on hold to the insurer.

Just wondered if anyone had been through this?

Unbelievable. So they don't want to know when the car is stolen and found. Will they want to do anything about the person who took it?

How did this happen?

MsFogi · 31/03/2022 17:59

@Pluvia

Yes, tie a threatening suffragette ribbon on one of the wing mirrors. The police will be along shortly.
This! The police have lots of time to attend Pride marches, do marketing with their trans women police offices, arrest women for stickering/tying threatening ribbons/having bad thoughts but no time to actually sort crime out.
HemanOrSheRa · 31/03/2022 18:01

Ah ok. The Met. I have to say our local police force are pretty good. I had my car stolen a couple of years ago. We knew who'd stolen it because they posted on snapchat and Insta 🙄. The police tried their hardest to get them charged with this and other crimes but it was a no go. It went on for months with the police trying their very best.

irishfarmer · 31/03/2022 18:01

WTF!! The police don't want to at least try and figure out who stole it and you've done most of the hard work. Be careful near the car, you don't know what sort of people (well bad ones) have robbed it.

thedancingbear · 31/03/2022 18:05

The Met, eh? Probably too busy humiliating black children.

Same old same old.

fiftyandfat · 31/03/2022 18:08

They cant even be bothered to investigate murders properly. Remember the Steven Port murders? Nothing has changed.

RandomQuest · 31/03/2022 18:08

It was the met that recovered mine so quickly. I suspect that the call coming from the manufacturer’s stolen vehicle centre rather than me probably helped. I now know it’s a very popular model for car thieves so I imagine they’re all on first name terms. But OP I’m glad your insurer is on it and you’re getting your car back despite the police being useless. Now hold tight for your insurance to hike their premium, the fun never ends.

EmmaH2022 · 31/03/2022 18:10

The police don't want to try to find who stole your car?

I've had that when a bag was stolen....but a car! They've sunk lower than I thought.

frazzledali · 31/03/2022 18:14

@LiesDoNotBecomeUs

I've read that the police are pretty active where people tie ribbons (in suffragette colours) on lamp-posts.

(Was the car green/white/purple OP? )

fucking hell, imagine being this obsessed with your fringe views that you think this is a normal thing to write.

Oh! Good thinking.

I wonder if I can use rustoleum aerosols on the car? They have such a wide range of colours. 🤔

frazzledali · 31/03/2022 18:15

Anyway, OP, when a guy was standing outside my house yelling he was going to burn it to the ground and breaking the glass in my door (a complete random btw) the police - yes, you've guessed it, the Met, said I 'was not a priority', so you'll never get them to come round to sort out a stolen car. Brilliant that you've found it though, hope all works out well!

NdefH81 · 31/03/2022 18:16

I just can’t believe the insurance company is going to send an employee to a criminal to collect the car.

Am I missing something?

Yeah. Never short of officers to stop and search, are they?
eurochick · 31/03/2022 18:18

It's a bizarre reaction from them because it's an easy clear up - report crime, 5 mins later solve crime. Job done (by the OP in reality but they can tick the box).

Jobseeker19 · 31/03/2022 18:18

You need to to tweet them and hash tag bbc and news papers

FoggySpecs · 31/03/2022 18:21

They are too busy fawning over the Beckhams and trying to retrieve Cruz's trainers.

SantaHat · 31/03/2022 18:22

Ah the Met. Sadly not surprised. A few months ago, my brother was driving when another car smashed into him, forced him off the road and drove off. Did the police give a shit? Nope. They asked if he had dash cam footage - no (although the area was local businesses so someone must have had CCTV). They didn’t come out as he wasn’t severely injured (by luck) and instantly closed the case.

TodayWeShark · 31/03/2022 18:23

It's not a solved crime unless people are arrested and prosecuted. And they are unlikely to have left the car near where they are staying / living.

It's a shame but this is why the police don't give a flying fuck.

That’s absolutely shocking!!!!

On a side note… just in case they also didn’t note this down… make sure the car is reported as stolen!
Just in case they racked up tickets or committed any crime that will turn up in the post!

And hold for dear life to the crime ref number

ancientgran · 31/03/2022 18:25

@Nonibaloni

My bag got stolen and my cards used before I could cancel (cause my phone went too). They used it to buy petrol and order stuff online. When I told the police I could tell them when and where they bought petrol so they could find the car and they could track where the deliveries went. They said they wouldn’t know which car it was in the petrol station and deliveries would take too long! My money was returned but they got £300 free and clear! I had no idea it was so easy to be a criminal.
I had someone buy something at John Lewis with one of my cards, it must have been cloned as I had the card. John Lewis wouldn't tell me where the delivery was due to confidentiality. I argued with them that if I had paid for it I had a right to know what it was and where it went. The customer service guy was quite rude and I've never shopped at John Lewis since. If they are more concerned about a thief's confidentiality than a law abiding citizen it isn't somewhere I want to shop.
CaMePlaitPas · 31/03/2022 18:25

This happened to my Mum years ago, the car was parked in full view on the estate near where we lived so Dad stole it back. No police involvement because we'd probably still be waiting to hear back.

IncompleteSenten · 31/03/2022 18:28

@Mumoftwoinprimary

They are probably too busy raping and murdering women and strip searching black children to bother with things like stolen cars.
Sadly absolutely true.

I was listening to some know it all on breakfast tv saying if Will Smith had slapped a man in a pub he'd have been arrested and in court. I thought yes that seems likely, when someone I know was being attacked with by knife wielding thug demanding the keys to his top end car and his wife phoned the police they didn't seem to be interested in the slightest.
Thewindwhispers · 31/03/2022 18:31

OP was the car on a public road, or on private land (like a driveway)? If on public road I think the police are probably correct, but if on private land I think the police are simply wrong about what the law is and their powers (which happens very often). It might be worth calling back to see if you get a different officer / I would put in a formal complaint if they seriously won’t help with the fact that someone has stolen your property and oht it on private land. You’ve done 99% of their work for them in finding the car!! But let the insurer recover the car first.
