Should Will loose his Oscar?

SpringHasSprungYay · 29/03/2022 20:30

Should we forgive him because it's out of character?

Has his mental heslth taken a turn for the worse because of Jada's infidelity & narcissism?

Is it really never ok to mention a black woman's hair?

Can words really be the same as violence?

So many issues to unpick here!

@dazzlingdeborahrose And Polanski actually won his Academy Award 25 years after he broke bail and fled the USA. He still has charges pending in that country.

KELLOGSspeck · 30/03/2022 01:25

@Fernandina

Chris Rock was a disgrace. If he'd said anything as offensive about a family member of mine, on live television and being watched by millions, I suspect I'd have done the same.
Exactly this. Its all well and good people saying other wise but Chris took advantage in front of a huge audience! So very very different to someone being offensive to you in day to day life.

Will snapped plus let's not forget the whole August thing.... Will simply had enough.

I notice how nobody seems to think Chris should of been removed only Will Confused

Vanillalatteplease · 30/03/2022 01:31

Who gives a shit. They are all spoilt over paid pretenders who are completely disconnected from the real world. They all know how the game works & they chose to play it willingly. I personally think the whole thing was staged. I bet more people are talkng about the Oscar's this year than ever before. Job done

Appalonia · 30/03/2022 01:36

The thing that has shocked me is that WS has always had this nice guy persona, especially in interviews. So to see him say, very aggressively, ' keep my wife's name out of your fing mouth' was even more shocking than the slap cos it felt like the mask had slipped and we were seeing who he really was. I think there HAS to be more to it than just that flippant comment from CR, but what? I don't know...

Marynotsocontrary · 30/03/2022 01:37

That's because there's a big difference between someone making a very bad 'joke' (even one that hurts) and someone physically belting someone.

Chris Rock says he didn't know about the alopecia, don't know whether he's being truthful or not...

DeeCeeCherry · 30/03/2022 01:42

But Will is a role model. For young black men in particular

No he is not, OP. Its not even a conversation.

Don't imply that because WS is a Black man, his actions will/should somehow impact other Black men. It smacks of the old racist stereotyping 'oh look 1 Black man did this so all Black men do that'. WS isnt responsible for other Black men, and vice versa.

What WS did was due to his character, not his race. Don't conflate the two.

& we need to stop hanging 'role model' labels on actors, its ridiculous and we dont get to hold them to anything simply because they have fame and money.

You could've easily made your point without the 'yeah but other Black men' angle

Fair point. However it wasn't really about being just a hurtful comment. Come on in front of a huge audience? On TV.

CR reaction.... was most bland and I can see how people think it was staged.

Habitatty282 · 30/03/2022 07:06

I think he should lose it. The Academy has changed its behaviour policies since the Me too movement and he's clearly in breach of them.

Habitatty282 · 30/03/2022 07:11

DeeCeeCherry WS being a black man is part of the conversation. There's been great changes to make the awards more inclusive, he does represent his culture. His film was directed by 2 black men, for the 1st time in history. Amazing changes are happening but we're not talking about that are we, we're talking about a violent physical assault that reinforces stereotypes. He's let a lot of people down.

Usingit · 30/03/2022 07:15

He should have been removed and a member of his entourage pick up his Oscar in his absence with just a small speech saying thank you on his behalf

Mentioning their hair is fine. Publicly mocking the fact that they have no hair, due to a traumatic medical condition that they have previously stated the stress of has seriously affected their mental health? Of course that’s not bloody well ok. Would it be ok to joke about her baldness if she was undergoing chemo?

He didn't do that though did he. He didn't even know she has alopecia. She had her hair buzzed short, no bald patches, she has often worn short edgier styles. He compared her to GI Jane, a fiece beautiful woman. Demi Moore was iconic in that role. It was an incredibly tame joke.

Agree.

Universe1969 · 30/03/2022 07:38

Loose or lose?

PaddlingLikeADuck · 30/03/2022 07:44

Comedians make jokes about health conditions all the time and it’s usually light hearted jokes to get laughs out of people - which it usually does.

However, to single someone out in a large audience and personally make them the butt of the joke and embarrass them is really not okay.

LondonWolf · 30/03/2022 07:46

I do wish people would stop pretending that CR's tepid joke was somehow on a par with being violently struck across the face in front of a audience of his peers and an international viewership of millions.

As an aside I wonder how many people have seen GI Jane, it's a fantastic movie, not an action filled kill fest.

Habitatty282 · 30/03/2022 07:51

PaddlingLikeADuck oh come on! Have you not watched any of these award shows before? It's what they do! They makes jokes about members of the audience. The celebrities know what they're there for. It wasn't even an embarrassing joke! Will Smith thought it was funny until he saw his wife's eye roll.

I can understand her feeling hurt if this is a sensitivity of hers, i can understand WS feeling enraged but there is absolutely no excuse for the physical violence displayed that night and we're on dangerous ground if we try and justify it.

southeastdweller · 30/03/2022 07:53

Yes and he won't. It would be terrible P.R for the Academy. The investigation by the Academy begins today, I expect they'll suspend his membership for a while.

His culture? What being American? Stop the shit about culture, someone brought up by Americans in America’s culture is American regardless of colour. The culture comment is such racist claptrap.

He doesn’t represent black men either. If he represents black men Roman Polanski represents white men, so all white men break the law and find ways of hiding from the consequences.

Covetthee · 30/03/2022 07:55

Interesting to see an old video of will smith has now resurfaced of him making jokes about someone suffering from alopecia…

It was a while ago but he knew the person had alopecia and mocked the person, Chris rock didnt and agree that his joke was tame compared to what is usually said at these shows.

Looking forward to see who will slap ricky gervais next time he hosts.. because apparently that’s acceptable now.

MaryAndHerNet · 30/03/2022 07:57

Chris rock was joking about Javier Bardem and his wife right before he made the joke about GI Jane. He was kinda roasting couples from the clips that I saw.

Lampzade · 30/03/2022 07:58

Answer to you question is No

whiteroseredrose · 30/03/2022 08:00

@dazzlingdeborahrose

Well, Roman Polanski has still got his oscar.....
Two wrongs don't make a right

Absolutely this. And this is why I don’t believe it was staged.

Oh god, Roman Polanski. The personification of everything wrong with Hollywood.
southeastdweller · 30/03/2022 08:13

What would WS have to gain by staging it? He's been hugely successful for decades and had been the favourite for months to win the Oscar.
