Kevin Rothrock *@kevinrothrock* The Perekrestok supermarket chain has apparently started locking down its canned meats in the city of Izhevsk, the capital of Russia’s Udmurt Republic (northeast of Kazan).
That's got to be an April Fools joke!

I completely agree CoffeeCreams. People don't want to face the fact that wickedness exists, in either great or small forms. Habitual comfort is an extremely strong force, even when faced with terrible things. Some wickedness is global, like Putin's and like some of the greedy weathy in all countries, and some of it is tiny like the malicious neighbour. Matter of scale. But you see this a lot, someone who is bad has to be mad or sick. It just ain't so.

A confectionery factory in Bucha has said that Russians mined the factory and poisoned the biscuits.

Samuel Ramani on Twitter saying a US official is claiming that Russia is using a church NW of Kyiv as a staging post for an assault on the city.

There has been a philosophical debate since the middle ages about whether 'evil' actions (i.e. ones that harm your fellow humans) are in fact prima facie evidence of mental illness. i.e. a truly balanced mind could not contemplate such a thing.

Ground to a halt with the evolutionary theory gaining ground though. After all, if you're just a large monkey with poor impulse control, then your desire for ever bigger and better bananas is easily explained. Personally, I think that's a complete cop-out.

Ijsbear · 01/04/2022 17:10

Interesting discussion Athelstane! I don't think there's one easy answer. I do think that if every child had a good, loving childhood with healthy boundaries and the company of good friends, there'd be a lot less Saddams, Putins, Wagner-mercs and other bloody awful individuals though. But as I say, there really isnt (to my mind) a single answer.

One question about the strike by the UA today. If it's from a stationary Russian camera, it seems odd that it's made its way to the West?

DGRossetti · 01/04/2022 17:23

As a child of the children of WW2, I've only ever been able to view it as a titanic struggle against evil. Is that wrong ? Despite being as secular and non-theist as you can get.

I guess a secular, evolutionary definition of "evil" might be something like a tendency, if left unchecked, that would lead to a gradual diminishment of a species ability to propagate

Which seems to cover some nutters taking homo sapiens to a nuclear extiction event.

many of the CCTV images seem to have been “watermarked” as being distributed by “vk.com” which seem to be a Russian Social media company..which, according to wiki..” allows users to message each other publicly or privately; create groups, public pages, and events; share and tag images, audio, and video; and play browser-based games”

So possibly [speculation] somebody posted their CCTV on-line (not sure if there would be financial incentive and then once it got picked up by western media…

That particular footage is from a CCTV camera (probably a local business). Someone records it on their phone from the security station monitor, uploads it to a Russian centric Telegram group, someone on there uploads it to Youtube etc. etc.

There are loads of videos of the strike, aftermath etc. many from phone cameras.

Saltedeggplant · 01/04/2022 17:44

Its basically a clone of Facebook.

VK/В контакте is the Russian equivalent of FB, Telegram is like What'sUp/Twitter cross. Lots of western journalists on both.

@ClaudineClare

I should obviously have made it clearer that I was aware the piece may or may not be true. Really sorry I posted it now though!
Don't be. I thought it was an interesting piece. Thanks for posting - I would have missed it. There is room for human interest links here as well as posts on military strategy etc.

I read this morning that Russian soldiers are so starving they have resorted to eating abandoned pet dogs which is just horrific, surely it can only be a matter of weeks or even days before they have to pull out of central Ukraine if not everywhere.

Not sure if it’s more horrific for the Russians or the dogs…

Swayingpalmtrees · 01/04/2022 18:09

There is an urgent action being taken to round up all of the animals in Ukraine that have been left behind once this became known.
It sounds to me like the Russian soldiers have truly hit rock bottom, their president clearly abandoned them a long time ago to their fate, and hasn't even the decency to feed them.

Ijsbear · 01/04/2022 18:09

did someone ask for truly touching cat pics?

It is the little moments like this, when you are away from home, cold, tired and lost too many of your friends, that can really see a surge in personal morale. Soldiers have always had pets during wars, all the way back into antiquity. By the look on his face, you can see why.
