Mumsnet buzzwords you can’t stand *light hearted*

Wavypurple · 19/03/2022 14:35

There are a few for me that set my teeth on edge.

‘Pop’ - my number one. My mortal enemy of MN words. Just ‘pop’ a plaster on it. I might ‘pop’ some money into a savings account. Why don’t you ‘pop’ to the GP for your Diet Coke addiction. No idea why it sets me off in such a way.

‘Flourish’ - enough said

There must be more of you out there. Are there any words you can’t stand that are MN buzzwords?

Again just to stress this is light hearted and I do not hold personal grudges against users that use these words 🤣

OP posts:

I vaguely remember a post where there was a row with another family. Can't remember the details but the poster referred to the man as the df.

Why! What was dear or darling about him, if they were having a row? Just call him dickhead, or should I say 'think dickhead'

bevelino · 20/03/2022 10:32

@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER

‘Judgy’, and especially ‘judgy pants’, FFS.
@GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER, what about ‘ you need to put on your big girl pants’.
Cocomarine · 20/03/2022 10:33

I may get torn a new one for this (sorry to the PP who hates that one!) but…

“Trigger warning” / “triggered” / “triggering”

I am fed up to the back teeth of people using this or saying this.

If you’re the sort of person who gets triggered by things, don’t open threads that are either clearly about those things, or not clear what they’re about.

There’s another thread running about mentioning abortion at work, and somebody has relied, “it could be triggering”. Yes, well - so could most things.

I wish “triggering” on here would autocorrect to “resilience”.

RachelGreeneGreep · 20/03/2022 10:35

@TheYearOfSmallThings

Any kind of pop-psychology, especially ‘narc’

Oh god yes. Whenever the OP describes their mother/sister/ex as a 'narc' I think there's a good chance the OP is the problem.

Oh yes.

And sometimes there's a 'diagnosis' (usually dementia) within a post or two on a thread. Makes me wonder why people bother studying to qualify in various specialist areas when a diagnosis can be made just like that...

ladybuggoldfinch · 20/03/2022 10:36

@Clevs me too! I can not bring myself to to it!

RachelGreeneGreep · 20/03/2022 10:37

'You sound like hard work' when some poster has outlined something that would probably annoy/ upset most people.

And equally puzzling 'you sound lovely'...

Bytrgrewd · 20/03/2022 10:52

@Appleseesaw

Outwith Beverage
But outwith is a Scottish word and to me makes more sense than without in the same context. There was a green hill far away without a city wall There was a green hill far away outwith a city wall.
70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/03/2022 10:55

On the Christmas Threads ( y'know the ones very clearly marked "Christmas" ) sometime manage to be in Trending .

You get the oh so funny reply "Nothing , it's March "
"I refuse to think about it till Dec 17th"

Well don't come whingeing when you find you have no delivery slot , no turkey in the size you want and no MustHave Present in stock .

And of course "Is this A THING" ? when the subject of Christmas Pyjamas / Christmas Eve Hamper /Christmas Bedding crops up.

I don't like chickens . I don't go onto The Chicken Run threads to gripe about the clucky beady eyed little beasts though .
Xmas Grin

Cocomarine · 20/03/2022 10:55

@Bytrgrewd I agree that outwith is just a word, though I don’t think the Scots lay any particular claim to it!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 20/03/2022 10:57

There was a green hill far away without a city wall
There was a green hill far away outwith a city wall

Is the outwith a city wall outside of the walled city rather than the city not being walled ?
Should've paid more attention in Sunday school .

Hill is outside a city which is walled. I used to wonder why they needed to state that a green hill didn’t have a city wall because why would a hill have a city wall 🤣
Foxyloxy1plus1 · 20/03/2022 11:44

I don’t understand why people are so often ‘fuming’. Even less so when they’re ‘fumming’ Lives must be spent in a state of high tension.

InFiveMins · 20/03/2022 12:13

"Yes OP, YABU. HTH!"

Not exactly buzzwords but along the same theme are responses along the lines of "what did she say when you confronted her about this, OP?" - always see this when a poster is having a dispute with their partner or a neighbour.

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 20/03/2022 12:35

Havent yet RTFT so maybe it's been mentioned before, but the utterly course and crass "fanny gallops" Envy🤢

I just presume the writer of that is an uncouth vulgarian who never changes their sheets or wipes their bum.

Newyearnewme2022 · 20/03/2022 13:19

Overnight fucking oats
Food of the gods
Narc
Plastic tat and landfill

AmyDudley · 20/03/2022 13:27

Crotch Goblin - always just sounds like a teenager trying to be deliberately provocative and thinking they are very daring and shocking.

And of course 'hobby'. 'My D has a 'hobby' -lets call it 'cycling' ' why the mystery ? What are all these hobbies that are so outing that they cannot be named. That mere mention of them will immediately identify the poster. That as soon as anyone knows her DH plays golf she will have to leave MN for fear of terrible repercussions.

Tidlo · 20/03/2022 13:32

Neurodivergent. Apparently pretty much everyone is and it's used as an excuse for shitty behaviour

BlueThursday · 20/03/2022 13:37

Spends as in “that left £10 for spends”

So bizarre

juliainthedeepwater · 20/03/2022 13:40

“Willy waving” makes me want to scream into a pillow

Andylion · 20/03/2022 15:15

I almost feel bad for saying this, but when I hate it when posters call an OP “Lovely”, as in “Oh Lovely, I am so sorry you are going through this”.

I have taken to using the word “pop” far too often in real life.
I never “bung” or “chuck”. They sound like words associated with a hangover.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 20/03/2022 16:30

Just remembered another one. When someone is venting about something mildly infuriating their mother has done, and it is clearly just someone needing to offload a petty frustration about the wrong flavour of yoghurt or similar, there is always, ALWAYS at least one poster who says 'My mum died 17 years ago. There's not a day goes by that I don't miss her. You don't know how lucky you are.'

MotherofAutism · 20/03/2022 21:27

@GrazingSheep

Big girl pants
Not a word though is it? It's 3!
EthelTheAardvark · 20/03/2022 21:32

Me too. Also "My love". No matter how nice you're trying to be, it's ridiculous to claim you love someone who you wouldn't recognise if you passed them in the street.
EthelTheAardvark · 20/03/2022 21:33

Remembered another one - "What have I just read?" I always want to ask people who say this whether they normally have problems with understanding basic English.
