Thought I’d lighten the mood a little and with an almost free weekend to watch whatever I want due to husband working away wondered if I could ask the most gripping bit of TV or film you’ve ever seen...

I’ve a couple to start us off, The Fall and in particular a scene between Jamie Dorman and Gillian Anderson.

Happy Valley

May I destroy you (I was still processing this for weeks after)

Normal people (just absolutely beautiful)

Give me yours.

@LondonWolf

The Red Wedding - GOT. I honestly didn't know what to do with myself afterwards.
Aria got revenge though Wink
SFisnotsimple · 19/03/2022 14:32

Oh yyy @ The Night Manager - although not the same tension second time around! I rewatched with DD last year

Awesome telly!

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 19/03/2022 14:53

Another vote for Chernobyl. The scene where the firefighter is in the Moscow hospital, just before he dies 😭 I had to pause it for a good 10 minutes while I just sobbed 😭😭

The Fall was very good, same for Happy Valley. Didn’t watch all of GOT but the Red Wedding had me literally watching with my mouth open!

Recently have watched Der Pass, again, very good. Some great scenes.

There must be loads more but I can’t remember any of them!

DanceForMeColin · 19/03/2022 15:09

@RoyKent that moment in Mad Men is my absolute favourite (and I adored the whole show), so much was conveyed between them in that look - sublime.

JerkintheMerkin · 19/03/2022 18:43

Das Boot the sky TV series. The amount of tension and claustrophobia going on in that sub I nearly lost my mind. God knows what it must have been like in real life.

CelebratingMyOwnSelf · 19/03/2022 22:04

Hacksaw ridge

LinManuelMirandaIsAGenius · 19/03/2022 22:32

@Lansonmaid I’ve never quite forgiven DH for not warning me what was going to happen in Gallipoli. He thought it was obvious, so didn’t need to. I didn’t see it coming. I sobbed for hours. Utterly heartbreaking…

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 19/03/2022 22:37

I love the episode grave danger in csi, when Nick gets buried alive, I don’t know why but I just found it gripping.

Also squid games, I just couldn’t stop watching. I was gripped...

Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 19/03/2022 22:38

@Tlollj

There’s a scene in the untouchables where a pram carrying a baby bounces down the stairs of a railway station. Mesmerising.
I forgot about this.... one of my fave movies aswell..
Rupertgrintismyguiltypleasure · 19/03/2022 22:39

Trigger point had me on edge too..

RedRobin100 · 19/03/2022 22:43

Yes - Chernobyl - that geiger-counter(sp?) noise..
Talk about gripping/terrifying..

Furries · 20/03/2022 03:16

GOT - the Red Wedding and The Long Night episodes. Also the episode revealing Hodor’s story.

Chernobyl - the whole thing.

American History X - the kerb scene particularly. But generally, the whole film.

On a lighter note - as a kid, I was obsessed with dogs. Lassie and The Littlest Hobo got to me every single episode!

stickybear · 20/03/2022 03:31

The opening interrogation scene in Inglorious Basterds, with Christoph Waltz's character in the farmhouse

StooriMidori · 20/03/2022 09:05

Game of Thrones had so many. Hold the door was just..... no words. I'm still not over that one. And the scene in Battle of the Bastards where Jon is standing gripping his sword as the Bolton army just thunders towards him. That whole episode was just amazing.

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 20/03/2022 09:37

Ah, that wasn't original though... it was ripped off an homage to an identical scene in the film Battleship Potemkin from 1925!

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 20/03/2022 10:17

@LeafyGreen333

The scene in Steel Magnolias where Sally Field does the amazing, emotional, ranting speech at her daughter's funeral, where she wants to hit someone until they feel as bad as she does, and Shirley MacLaine gets pushed forward.

More recently - The Lost Daughter with Olivia Coleman, I was gripped throughout, I still think about it.

Steel Magnolias - absolutely my favourite film, I never fail to laugh and sob
MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 20/03/2022 10:22

We went to see Schindler’s List in a packed cinema when it came out. I don’t remember anybody eating/drinking/going to the loo, just silence and when it finished there was spontaneous applause. Still gives me chills thinking about it.

American History X blew me away. Incredible film

misskatamari · 20/03/2022 13:02

My favourite for gripping tv shows are Spartacus (really gory but it's amazing!), Dark (German subtitled sort of mystery, slight horror. So clever and awesome) and the Twelve Monkeys series (time travel, and so so clever and well done).

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 20/03/2022 13:10

Oh, Dark is on my list @misskatamari I've heard its like a darker, more adult version of Stranger Things!

YouHaveYourFathersBreasts · 20/03/2022 13:18

The red wedding GoT. I haven’t read the books so wasn’t expecting it at all, any of it. Had always rooted for the Stark family and expected them to somehow find a way out of it. Battle of the bastards had a similar effect too. Me and my partner yelling “zigzag ya dickhead!” At Rickon.

It’s a sin. All of it. Amazing series and it stayed with me for ages. Those poor lads. Colin’s ending in particular was a shock- it didn’t occur to me he would contract HIV.

Clawdy · 20/03/2022 14:22

The scene near the end of "Dr Zhivago " when Yuri sees Lara through the bus window and desperately tries to get to her. However many times I see it, I'm still longing for her to just see his face!

foxlover47 · 20/03/2022 14:45

The ending in the latest outing of Top Boy on Netflix 😱

GoodnessTruthBeauty · 20/03/2022 14:50

Haven't RTT but halfway through "Parasite" when suddenly we find out that the light, bright, modern and spacious wealthy home has a long, creepy, claustrophobic, concrete stairwell under the house and someone is down there was extremely gripping an unexpected.

RusholmeRuffian · 20/03/2022 15:37

The Long Term Parking episode of The Sopranos where Adriana is killed

Bravoecholima · 20/03/2022 15:41

Parasite-Especially the second half-watched with my jaw on the floor!
