Thought I’d lighten the mood a little and with an almost free weekend to watch whatever I want due to husband working away wondered if I could ask the most gripping bit of TV or film you’ve ever seen...

I’ve a couple to start us off, The Fall and in particular a scene between Jamie Dorman and Gillian Anderson.

Happy Valley

May I destroy you (I was still processing this for weeks after)

Normal people (just absolutely beautiful)

Give me yours.

Chernobyl was on Now TV when we watched it @lancslass17

HotSauceCommittee · 18/03/2022 18:27

Con Air.
The Equaliser (the 1980's version of the series with Edward Woodward)

cashmerecardigans · 18/03/2022 18:31

The Cracker episode where Christopher Ecclestone bleeds to death on the street. That stayed with me for a long time

OhYeahyeahyeah · 18/03/2022 18:33

@practicallyperfect55 Oh gosh, that line in It's a Sin actually hurt my heart, sounds ridiculous but I was devastated 😭

AnyFucker · 18/03/2022 18:37

Lots of the above and also “Gladiator” where he goes to his wife and child. So bittersweet.

AnyFucker · 18/03/2022 18:38

It’s A Sin made me sob. So sad, and all the more affecting because it was based in truth.

inheritancetrack · 18/03/2022 18:39

Every other scene in game of thrones! Sean bean beheaded, Jon snow murdered, the dragons slaying the slavemaster, ...tons of them!

inheritancetrack · 18/03/2022 18:39

The .red wedding! Omg!

drigon · 18/03/2022 18:40

I'd say many parts of Breaking Bad for harrowing moments. Deutschland 83 for jumps/ shocks and BBC 1 Series The Village for a downright tragic moment when they executed the 'deserter' son.

tillytoodles1 · 18/03/2022 18:43

The shower scene in the original Psycho.

ilovebagpuss · 18/03/2022 18:47

Every single minute of Handmaid's Tale.
Recently The Responder on BBC actually made me feel so stressed every episode but so good.

Krabapple · 18/03/2022 18:48

Yes to loads of these. What immediately sprang to mind though was LOD - several scenes were so tense. The one where he threw her out of the window and also when he was thrown over the banister.
The red wedding also - and Happy Valley !

trackerc · 18/03/2022 18:49

ER had such gripping scenes. Often laughs, shocks & tears all rolled into one exhausting episode. Carter & Lucy stabbing was one.
Also loved early series of 24. I'd never been eager to binge watch anything until then.
Agree with the Fall, This is England, LoD, Chernobyl, Unforgotten

LemonDrizzles · 18/03/2022 18:50

I still think of lost season 1.
Unreal.
Gross Pointe (the tv show, about Beverly Hills 90210).
Stranger things
Newsradio
Scandal
Desperate housewives
Veronica Mars

Saucery · 18/03/2022 18:52

The scene in the film Hereditary.
When Aulus tuns to Kerra in Season 1 of Britannia and shows her “how Rome really works”.
Jim Nelson’s speech in G.B.H.

Agree with Red Riding. Stunning acting.

thebellsesmereldathebells · 18/03/2022 18:53

The last half hour of Raise the Red Lantern

Most of the original adaptation of The Woman In Black, not the cruddy Daniel Radcliffe version

The court scenes in The Trials of Oscar Wilde

The bit in Djanjo Unchained where Stephen realises they are after Hildy, not the mandingo fighters

LemonDrizzles · 18/03/2022 18:57

Also...
Jessica Jones and maybe of we all re watch now that it's on Disney, they'll give us another season....

Not so much gripping as just pure sauce Grin Hannibal (TV series) when he just guts everyone. You know he's going to but you can't believe it. Or the bit when Beverley turns around in the cellar.
MissAmbrosia · 18/03/2022 19:03

ER was fabulous - so many moments!

My biggest one is the scene with Ralph Fiennes and his Jewish housekeeper in Schindlers List. He desires her and realises his power over her but knows he is supposed to think she is "dirty and inhuman" It was a piece of incredible acting showing all the emotions that he felt all jumbled together. It was so menacing and intense.

The ear cutting scene in Reservoir Dogs with jaunty music.

Feelingoktoday · 18/03/2022 19:06

@annabell22

The gang rape scene in The Accused is horrendous and therefore memorable- it must be 30 years since I saw it and yet it's the first one that came to mind.
Same here. It was absolutely shocking at the time and I couldn’t talk about it afterwards without being upset.
PutinsMicropenis · 18/03/2022 19:08

There were loads of points in The Handmaid's Tale that had me literally on the edge of my seat - I'm rubbish with specific episodes but when she is smuggling her baby out with the help of the Marthas, then sends the baby off with Emily and stays to try to save her other daughter, I could barely cope!

notnowdennis · 18/03/2022 19:11

Platoon - where they realise Elias is alive and left behind.

The untouchables in Sean Connery’s flat or in the elevator or when the mobster gets pushed off the building… “did he sound like this?” Or the baseball bat at dinner. That whole film is exquisite and awful.

The first phone call in Scream to Sidney! So creepy and so silly now.

Many game of thrones moments - every week. The bear and the maiden stands out, along with The Red Wedding - the Rains of Castamere is so creepy brilliant.

Lipsandlashes · 18/03/2022 19:11

Chernobyl is on Sky on demand

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 18/03/2022 19:14

@cashmerecardigans

The Cracker episode where Christopher Ecclestone bleeds to death on the street. That stayed with me for a long time
"Oh, Katrina"

Christopher Ecclestone is fabulous. I saw him playing Hamlet once - outstanding - and the miniseries The Messiah stayed with me for a long time.

Inside No 9's 12 Days of Christine is possibly the most affecting piece of TV I have ever watched. I don't think I will ever watch it again.
