Thought I’d lighten the mood a little and with an almost free weekend to watch whatever I want due to husband working away wondered if I could ask the most gripping bit of TV or film you’ve ever seen...

I’ve a couple to start us off, The Fall and in particular a scene between Jamie Dorman and Gillian Anderson.

Happy Valley

May I destroy you (I was still processing this for weeks after)

Normal people (just absolutely beautiful)

Give me yours.

A lot of the early series of West Wing.

The Line of Duty urgent exit where the armed police went rogue.

hidethetoaster · 18/03/2022 19:27

@streamee yes!

'Ayra kills the Night King'. Haunting beautiful music, tension and stunning visuals. There are videos on Youtube of people from all over the world watching this scene and reacting to it.
I’ve just gone down a YouTube rabbit warren watching these.

Brings it all back. Amazing scenes and you’re so right about the score.

Most of The Handmaids Tale, The Battle Of The Bastards from GOT, Chernobyl, end of Ozark series 3.

HermioneWeasley · 18/03/2022 19:41

Chernobyl
All seasons of The Bridge
The season finale of season 3 line of duty

westr · 18/03/2022 19:49

Most recently, dopesick. Very very good. I will try Chernobyl next.

Thelikelylass · 18/03/2022 19:50

For tension:
Anthony Hopkins holding the book as Emma Thompson tries to prise it from his hands in 'Remains of the day'
Joe Pesci quizzing Ray Liotta in "Goodfellas'
Denzel Washington in his hotel room drying out but the mini bar has one small bottle of wine on top in 'Flight'.
Stephen Graham getting drunk in the bar and buying everyone drinks, what an incredible performance in the 'The Virtues'

Itsalloutofwhack · 18/03/2022 20:01

Inspired by this thread I’ve sat down to watch the Hurt Locker or Chernobyl tonight. Is the Chernobyl you’re all talking about a film on Netflix: Chernobyl 1986? I had a feeling it was a series?

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 18/03/2022 20:03

2019 series, @Itsalloutofwhack, not on Netflix unfortunately.

ImplementingTheDennisSystem · 18/03/2022 20:17

Episode 5 of Gangs of London is one of the most suspenseful things I've ever seen and can be watched as a standalone episode.

Spudina · 18/03/2022 20:29

Series 2, episode 1 of the Handmaids Tale. Where the girls are in nooses. Pretty much all of the Handmaids Tail actually. Chilling and gripping. Also Homeland. Excellent TV.

52andblue · 18/03/2022 20:33

Recently: much of the first series of The Handmaid's Tale
Long ago: a series called After Life from 2005/6.

Films: Schindlers List can never be equalled imo.

I loved that series! I have the DVD somewhere.

BorgQueen · 18/03/2022 20:48

Most recent : All of 1883, it’s hauntingly beautiful and brutal, gives a real sense of what the Oregan trail must have been like and also how Native Americans suffered when Europeans pushed Westward.
The episode of Walking Dead where Alpha has killed quite a few main characters and their heads are on spikes.
The battle of Winterfell, such awesome cinematography.

dizzydizzydizzy · 18/03/2022 20:49

As a child, I was always mesmerised by the factory scenes in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. So magical.

I love Call the Midwife. Fantastic on so many levels - general history of the time, fashion, learning about childbirth, gripping plots and understanding the character's personalities.

Where can I watch 1883?
BillyAndTheSillies · 18/03/2022 21:15

Another hand up for Chernobyl. I don't think a series has ever stuck with me like that before or since. I think I need to rewatch it.

Pose as well. Ryan Murphy is an incredible story teller. But Paris is Burning, which a lot of the story lines come from is also a film that took me down a huge rabbit hole of researching and finding out what happened to the cast.

Taffiy · 18/03/2022 21:25

Chernobyl - Jared Harris in the Court scenes.
Game of Thrones - when the white walkers over take Hardhome and Jon snow realises his sword can kill them.
Outlander - Jamie and Claire at the stones 😭😭

This for me too.

I don't think I breathed for about five minutes from when the music changed.

I screamed my head off when Arya appeared over the Night King's shoulder and was sobbing when she finished him off. Brilliant TV.
(If you ignore Jon Snow shouting a dragon to death Smile)

amicissimma · 18/03/2022 22:40

Don't Look Now. But I don't know if it would look aged nowadays - I don't think I want to watch it again in case it does.

I listened to Endurance as an audiobook and it was so gripping I stayed up all night listening by mistake. The outcome is history but I just couldn't see how it could happen. And it's true. Also Alive, but not for the queasy.

MrsWidgerysLodger · 18/03/2022 22:51

A film that had me agog from the beginning but that I will never watch again is Requiem For A Dream.

How Ellen Burnstyn did not get an Oscar for her absolutely incredible yet harrowing portrayal of complete mental decline is beyond me.

Sux2buthen · 18/03/2022 22:53

Ooh The Fall was brilliant
Currently on The Last Kingdom, it's fantastic and not my usual thing

LeafyGreen333 · 18/03/2022 22:55

The scene in Steel Magnolias where Sally Field does the amazing, emotional, ranting speech at her daughter's funeral, where she wants to hit someone until they feel as bad as she does, and Shirley MacLaine gets pushed forward.

More recently - The Lost Daughter with Olivia Coleman, I was gripped throughout, I still think about it.

HRTQueen · 18/03/2022 22:57

HappyValley the first series every episode is so tense

The first series of Homeland especially when he is tapping his fingers

Hank sitting on the loo reading Walter’s book and the revelation that suddenly seema obvious

Omar being shot dead in The Wire was just so shocking

The last scene of The Sopranos you know something is going to happen

Prime Suspect finding the garage (first series)

Brainstorm21 · 18/03/2022 23:00

The border scene from Sicario -

The ending of Arrival.

Denis Villeneuve is a genius.
