Thought I’d lighten the mood a little and with an almost free weekend to watch whatever I want due to husband working away wondered if I could ask the most gripping bit of TV or film you’ve ever seen...

I’ve a couple to start us off, The Fall and in particular a scene between Jamie Dorman and Gillian Anderson.

Happy Valley

May I destroy you (I was still processing this for weeks after)

Normal people (just absolutely beautiful)

Give me yours.

My favourite TV series ever is Lost. I also love Outlander, although the recent series hasn’t been as good as the first ones but I’d definitely recommend watching it.

CatNamedEaster · 18/03/2022 15:00

God yes that scene in The Accused. It actually came to mind a few days ago.

Mine is a scene at the end of River with Nicola Walker. I won't give anything away but there is a dance. I wept buckets and I still think of it often as it's so poignant and relevant to events/regrets/"if only" moments in my life.

MrsBerthaRochester · 18/03/2022 15:07

I came on to say Chernobyl but see it has been mentioned. My teenage son cant stop talking about how good it was. Im going to rewatch asap.

jowly · 18/03/2022 15:13

The beginning of Saving Private Ryan, where they're coming on to the beach. I had to turn it off. That's not entertainment to me. Awful.

DearlyBeloathed · 18/03/2022 15:13

The shootout between the DEA and Jack's gang in Breaking Bad. Just brilliant.

practicallyperfect55 · 18/03/2022 15:14

Spoiler alert...

The end of Its a Sin when his mum just causally told Gill 'he died yesterday'. Although you knew it was coming it still felt like such a shock.

Other memorable TV moments I remember were the endings of The Missing and Broadchurch just for the sheer suspense building up to them.

LondonWolf · 18/03/2022 15:16

The Red Wedding - GOT. I honestly didn't know what to do with myself afterwards.

parboil · 18/03/2022 15:18

The first scene of The Hurt Locker. I picked up my glass to take a drink as the film opened, and it was still halfway to my mouth 20 minutes later.

iklboo · 18/03/2022 15:18

Another vote for Chernobyl. I couldn't believe the manager who was trying to pass the buck was also the dad in Friday Night Dinner, Paul Ritter. Brilliant actor and sadly missed.

sleaf · 18/03/2022 15:19

A few years ago there was a really good BBC Drama "The Driver", but I don't think it's available anywhere to watch now, but perhaps on YouTube.

hidethetoaster · 18/03/2022 15:21

"Kneel"

Fatgalslim · 18/03/2022 15:29

@Lipsandlashes

I thought the Chernobyl series on Sky was completely anxiety inducing. The first episode and then the final episode where you saw exactly what happened to cause the reactor to explode. Spectacular TV
Couldn't agree more
MotherofPearl · 18/03/2022 15:31

The Bridge. All series. Just so gripping.

Fatgalslim · 18/03/2022 15:32

The Red Riding Triology - Andrew Garfield was exceptional in this, binge watched it in one night, couldn't turn it off

Candlecassie · 18/03/2022 15:32

The last 20 minutes of season 3 of Line of Duty when Dot texts urgent exit required.

Or the episode when Stephen Graham has his throat slashed in season 5.

CatrinVennastin · 18/03/2022 15:41

The bit in Mare of Eastown when Kate Winslet’s character is hiding from the killer and she slips down some stairs in a race to get to her gun.

I screamed out loud it was so tense!

DennisSkinnersMolotov · 18/03/2022 15:53

The dinner table scene in This is England 90.

Jobhelpplease · 18/03/2022 15:57

@Fatgalslim OMG I forgot about this, such an amazing and gritty series.

@DennisSkinnersMolotov so well acted!!

@VaulterTech

Agree on series 1 of happy valley.

Would also say the ‘urgent exit required’ scenes from line of duty, and really most of line of duty!

That scene is the one I came here to mention! Incredible bit of TV.

I really like the original three Bourne films, all of which are stuffed with tense moments, and my favourite bit of all is the extended scenes shot in Waterloo station in the third film.

It wasn't meant to be entertainment. I thought it was exceptional filmmaking.
notawittyname1954 · 18/03/2022 16:00

Its a sin. too many scenes to mention just one. Heartbreaking and funny.

ItsREDfive · 18/03/2022 16:05

The last 15 minutes of the 2nd mandalorian series when Luke sky walker made a return, it had me squeeling!

thedarkling · 18/03/2022 16:08

@FlippyFloppyFlappy

The Mountain and The Viper (I audibly gasped) Veronica Guerin, where the man attacks her, it upset me for ages.
Agree with this, GOT at its absolute best. I'd read the books but I was still absolutely on the edge of my seat, heart pounding!
GlitchStitch · 18/03/2022 16:08

Completely agree with the poster who said the season 1 finale of Prison Break.

Also the hospital shooter episodes of Greys Anatomy. And for the sheer shock value discovering John Doe is George the first time I ever saw that episode, I watched it as it aired live so had no spoilers and didn't see it coming at all.

The first time watching the Shawshank Redemption and seeing the escape.

I really wish I could enjoy some things for the first time again!

Lovinglife45 · 18/03/2022 16:12

Line of Duty where Dot texts for help. I think I re-watched this scene at least 5 times.

The Usual Suspects where Kaizer Sosay (Kevin Spacey) is shown walking away while the police officer realises he was the villain all along.
