1st online shop. How much to tip?

Isausernameavailable · 18/03/2022 06:38

Hi, just that really. I've never had a supermarket delivery before but at home with Covid so its a godsend.
How much do you tip the driver? The only similar deliveries i get are takeaways where i tip around £3, but my shop is a lot more so would i look tight?

OP 😂

Don't you get charged a delivery fee in your supermarket shop? If it's with Uber eats or similar you can add a tip through the app.

But as far as tipping the supermarket delivery driver, this is the first I've ever read of this!

Are you elderly?

UsernameA1B2 · 18/03/2022 07:25

In the 15 years of using supermarket deliveries I have never given a tip.

Skyeheather · 18/03/2022 07:30

You pay for your delivery and the driver gets a salary. You don't need to tip them, MIL gets a delivery every week, it would cost a fortune if she tipped them every week.

Do you tip the post person daily for bringing your mail?!

GeodesicDome · 18/03/2022 07:30

I wish more women would wise up and stop giving blokes money all the time for no reason. They're taking the piss.

OnTheBoardwalk · 18/03/2022 07:31

I tip once a year for my big Christmas shop but that’s my choice. You can tell from the response from the driver it’s not usually done

As others have said a cold water on a hot day is offered

On big shop and hot days I do get a lot of extra carrier bags credited to my account

2022sucksalready · 18/03/2022 07:31

I give a big tip at Christmas, but nothing on my weekly deliveries.

Erictheavocado · 18/03/2022 07:31

One of my dcs works at a Tesco depot and says that drivers are clearly told they are NOT to accept tips from customers. Not sure how it works for other supermarkets though.

How do you know the op/those replying are woman, how do you know the delivery driver is male?
Boboparadise · 18/03/2022 07:39

I always tip the grocery delivery £2

rattlemehearties · 18/03/2022 07:42

I've never heard of this! It's definitely not the norm OP.

Even at Christmas I wouldn't for supermarket delivery as it's never the same driver.

Summerfun54321 · 18/03/2022 07:42

It’s the U.K. not America. We don’t need to tip in this country as we have a living minimum wage. Americans tip because service staff get paid next to nothing.

SundayTeatime · 18/03/2022 07:43

You don’t need to tip.

MMAMPWGHAP · 18/03/2022 07:47

Over 18 years of supermarket deliveries. Not tipped ever. I make that about £2000 saved.

Zonder · 18/03/2022 07:50

Never heard of anyone tipping any delivery drivers. Not even at Christmas. We have a different driver every week.

Isausernameavailable · 18/03/2022 07:50

Ok, thanks for most of the responses, (and to the ill-mannered like @blockbustervideo and others, I was only asking, no need for the sneering)
Guess I won't tip then.

In defence of the OP how could she know in advance that the driver will be a man? You're looking for issue that don't exist or do you assume that a women can't drive a van and heft crates?
Ragruggers · 18/03/2022 07:54

We never have the same delivery driver but all lovely they are just doing their job why would you tip?

Sirzy · 18/03/2022 07:57

Phew I thought for a minute I had been making a massive faux pax the last two years by not tipping!

I wish people would stop making assumptions on what jobs someone can do based on their gender!
VladsPants · 18/03/2022 08:00

I never tip anyone. Handing over a few pounds to a grown adult who is already being paid? Cringe.

FlamingoQueen · 18/03/2022 08:06

I have never tipped my delivery driver, but always have a little chat with them. I think they have so many horrible customers that they appreciate it when someone is nice to them!

Rubyupbeat · 18/03/2022 08:08

I used to tip around a fiver, but then a similar post to yours appeared on mumsnet which replies basically said it was against the rules and the driver could lose their job, so I Stopped after that.

SixteenTwelve · 18/03/2022 08:16

Nothing. It has never occurred to me to tip my sainsburys delivery driver. Tipping is about receiving a good quality service and rewarding it imo, how well or badly can someone dump a crate of groceries at your door step?

OldTinHat · 18/03/2022 08:25

Nothing. They don't expect it and aren't allowed to accept tips.
