1st online shop. How much to tip?

Hi, just that really. I've never had a supermarket delivery before but at home with Covid so its a godsend.
How much do you tip the driver? The only similar deliveries i get are takeaways where i tip around £3, but my shop is a lot more so would i look tight?

I would not tip a supermarket driver just as I would not nip in the store and tip the person who went round collecting the products for my order.

ChazzaGirl · 18/03/2022 11:09

@marqueses I don’t see a difference in tipping the supermarket delivery person and tipping the takeaway delivery person - both are bringing me food, for which I am thankful!

Just being curious, do people tip hairdressers, taxi drivers and waiting staff?

ChazzaGirl · 18/03/2022 11:13

Ignore last part of my previous comment - I’ve just seen that quite a few people on here do.

Ohmygodyesthatsit · 18/03/2022 11:20

I used to work in a spa tips were regular and appreciated, I now have my own home based business no one tips me anymore. So tipping is clearly based on perception of earnings. I have also worked retail low pay etc never ever get tipped but other low pay workers do makes no sense to me. I never tip I have always earned the same as the people i would tip so no.

Supermarket delivery people are salaried employees of major companies getting a decent (not over-generous) wage for the hours worked and full standard benefits. I don't begrudge them a penny of their recompense for doing an important job, but don't feel the need to pay them extra.

Takeaway delivery drivers are normally unsalaried gig economy workers with often marginal incomes, driving mopeds in the cold and dark and dealing with drunks. I'll definitely tip them a couple of quid.

@Summerfun54321

It’s the U.K. not America. We don’t need to tip in this country as we have a living minimum wage. Americans tip because service staff get paid next to nothing.
*@Sumerfun54321* We are British, and live in the UK. My husband gave up his well paid, secure job to be my carer. He became a part time delivery driver (this was before the pandemic), and although he had to follow all sorts of rules and regulations, it was considered to be a self-employment type of job, so no minimum wage, no job security, no sick or holiday pay, and he had to do his own tax returns etc.

Much of the time he was actually earning about £4 less than the minimum wage, he got very few tips, but when he did get even a couple of pounds he was very happy. I am not saying that anyone should tip a supermarket delivery driver, as I don't know if they are employed by the company, or considered self-employed, as my husband was. If someone finds out that someone who does manual labour for them is self-employed, and if they can afford to tip them, then it would be a kind and I'm sure a much appreciated thing to do.

@Isausernameavailable Thank you for your kind consideration whether or not you find it appropriate to tip your delivery driver.

I never have

FavouriteFortnight · 18/03/2022 14:13

I think tipping is largely driven by norms in different sectors and cultures, nothing to do with perceived worth or the income of the person being tipped.

AnnesBrokenSlate · 18/03/2022 14:17

I always give takeaway delivery drivers a tip but I've never tipped a supermarket delivery driver. Hmm

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 18/03/2022 14:18

I always tip my supermarket delivery person. I only have a delivery every couple of months and it's for all the heavy stuff. I live in a top floor tenement appreciate them lugging it up the stairs (no lift).

MoiraQ · 18/03/2022 14:21

Mate is a Tesco dotcom driver and he says they aren't allowed to accept tips.

Kinneddar · 18/03/2022 14:24

@GeodesicDome

I wish more women would wise up and stop giving blokes money all the time for no reason. They're taking the piss.
Odd comment. Why assume the delivery person is male. I had a delivery half an hour ago delivered by Lucy. Its amazing the jobs women can do these days 🙄
Insanegotnobrain · 18/03/2022 14:28

All supermarket delivery drivers I know gladly accept tips which range from £2 to £10 on/off all year

It’s against company policy for at least a couple of supermarkets. A couple of quid is a stupid amount to lose a job over!

Kittykatmacbill · 18/03/2022 14:35

Never tip!

Moonface123 · 18/03/2022 15:02

Yet it was the dot.com drivers that made sure everyone got to eat throughout covid, they didn't get furloughed for months on end like hairdressers and restaurants.

2bazookas · 18/03/2022 15:07

I never tip the smkt delivery staff . They provide excellent service, for which I thank them, and make it as pleasant and convenient as possible for them.

I pay for delivery; the smkt pays the delivery staff.

Everyone who worked in the food supply chain mades sure we all had food, did you pop into the store to tip all the army of order pickers and warehouse workers?

What's the link between whether someone was on furlough and getting a tip now

Most hairdressers got completely and absolutely shafted because most aren't employed.

Delivery drivers just carried on doing their job. That doesn't mean they should get tips.
