1st online shop. How much to tip?

Isausernameavailable · 18/03/2022 06:38

Hi, just that really. I've never had a supermarket delivery before but at home with Covid so its a godsend.
How much do you tip the driver? The only similar deliveries i get are takeaways where i tip around £3, but my shop is a lot more so would i look tight?

I wish more women would wise up and stop giving blokes money all the time for no reason. They're taking the piss.
Preach!

I’ve never heard of anyone doing this!

To be honest though, I don’t tip anyone. I can’t afford to. If I go for a rare meal out, or an even rarer haircut every few years, I’m up to the wire with what I’ve spent anyway. I can’t afford to add anymore on top.

My SIL thinks this is outrageous and that I’m very rude but what can I do? Have slightly less on a rare treat so I can tip at the end? Sorry but I don’t want to do that.

SatinHeart · 18/03/2022 09:00

@FlamingoQueen

I have never tipped my delivery driver, but always have a little chat with them. I think they have so many horrible customers that they appreciate it when someone is nice to them!
Same. I always ask them how their day is going and give them the opportunity to have a bit of a moan if they like! But until a previous MN thread like this one, it hadn't occurred to me to tip them Confused
SatinHeart · 18/03/2022 09:01

I don't tip anywhere except cafes and restaurants tbh

emmathedilemma · 18/03/2022 09:01

Nothing

FavouriteFortnight · 18/03/2022 09:03

I only tip at Christmas

babywalker56 · 18/03/2022 09:03

I don't tip for anything in this country.

Same😂 I only ever tip the woman who does my pedicure as she does it great everytime. Never heard of anyone even considering to tip a delivery driver tho. Do you consider tipping Yodel/Hermes drivers too?

Lookingforanswers202 · 18/03/2022 09:08

When I first arranged a Tesco shop for my grandparents my Nan asked me how much she should tip 💗

A lot of delivery drivers are female, you know.....
MajorCarolDanvers · 18/03/2022 09:15

Been online shopping since March 2020 and it's never occurred to me to tip.

KatherineJaneway · 18/03/2022 09:16

No tip

Gonnagetgoing · 18/03/2022 09:26

You never tip them.

Thewindwhispers · 18/03/2022 09:35

I never tip delivery drivers unless it’s Christmas or snowing (roads here are bad then) in which case I give then £10. In a bad heatwave I give them frozen water bottles which are always received with joy!

My mum tips ocado £1 each delivery and has been doing so since they began.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 18/03/2022 09:36

None. I’m not paying for delivery and tipping.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 18/03/2022 09:42

I work for a supermarket (the clues in my name as to which one) and accepting tips is classed as gross misconduct and is a sackable offence. They’re not even allowed to accept a non monetary gift. The example that was given in training was that a customer had an apple tree and was giving the excess apples away, the driver would not be allowed to accept even that.

If you do get a really brilliant driver and want to do something for them then contact the store and tell their manager how good their customer service was Smile.

ChazzaGirl · 18/03/2022 09:47

I always tip and have never been told by the driver that they can’t accept it.

Why on earth do supermarkets make it a sackable offence? It’s up to the customer if they want to tip.

Accepting any sort of ”freebie” is a disciplinary matter in the large company I work for, and surely most companies. There are strict rules over it.

I'd imagine because they want a level playing field for their employees for one thing. Why should some drivers get paid more by the luck of the draw of which round they have? Any cash outside of normal wages can be step down a slipperly slope.

Just because the driver takes the money doesn't mean they're allowed to do so, which shop is it?

ChazzaGirl · 18/03/2022 10:02

@marqueses The delivery drivers have to lug heavy crates to my door in all types of weather (our deliveries are usually in the evening, and parking is dreadful round here so the driver invariably ends up parking at the foot of the hill). I will absolutely keep on tipping them as they deserve it. The only time I wouldn’t tip them is if they were unfriendly or rude (that hasn’t happened yet).

I’m not telling you which shop - I ain’t no grass 😉

Fantasea · 18/03/2022 10:07

I've also been using online grocery deliveries since March 2020 and have never tipped once. I have a condition where I can't bend to reach the crates at floor level so always need the driver to keep them stacked up which involves rearranging them after each one. Even with this extra customer service, it has never occurred to me to tip!

Comfortableatlast · 18/03/2022 10:15

Have never even thought of tipping supermarket drivers. I do always say a big thank you and wish them a lovely day.

Also, always offer a cold can of pop or a cold water, on a really hot day.

Not all supermarket or any other delivery people are men

That's a nice idea. An Asda driver told me once that their vans don't have air con in the drivers cab.

Agree with pp a lots of supermarket delivery drivers round my way are women.

Do you also tip your bin men/women every week? Your postie? The workers who mend your roads?

The job of the delivery driver is to do the things you've said, is there a reason to giving them extra money but not other workers who work in the rain or dark or carry heavy things for your benefit?
Obviously you can give your money to whoever you like, I've just never heard of tipping a shopping delivery driver for doing their job except on here and wonder why they are treated better than others with harder jobs

deadlanguage · 18/03/2022 10:58

I don’t tip. I don’t tip supermarket cashiers either and it’s basically the same thing.
