How often do you wash your car

Mine was brand new on 1 July and it's just occurred to me I've never washed it Grin

I don't think it looks that bad and every time I think about doing it the weather forecast is such that it seem pointless.

Is 9 months an exceptionally long time to go without washing your car?

It doesn't do a lot of miles but it is used daily and lives outdoors.

When it looks dirty. More often in the winter, because of the salt on the roads.

HalloHello · 16/03/2022 23:00

Mine gets a power wash and vacuum from VW after it's service, otherwise very rarely. I do hoover the inside every couple of weeks though, and take out all the crap every day!

Zazdar · 16/03/2022 23:07

Does just the lights, windows and number plates count?

Someone comes every Saturday to wash them

Once every couple of months at the car wash. Any time I've attempted to wash a car myself it always looks worse off with streaks and smears abound! Recently I went to a self service car wash with foaming brushes, various jet washers, the works. Maxed out the time allowed, followed all the instructions and was proud of a job well done. When the car dried off half of the body work was still filthy!

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 17/03/2022 00:28

Twice in the 3 years I've had it. It's gone to the hand car wash a few times as well but that's it.

Infinitemoon · 17/03/2022 13:28

This thread is crazy! Wash all your cars immediately! Grin

I am literally stunned that some people only wash their car every year! I hate a dirty car.

Sparklingbrook · 17/03/2022 13:34

When it looks a bit dirty especially after the gritters/salt spreaders have been out.
I take it to one called Waves at Tesco, and they do it while I'm in the shop.

deadlanguage · 17/03/2022 13:44

@Infinitemoon we don’t really use the car, maybe 1-2x a month to stop the battery dying, and it’s parked down the street so we don’t really notice if it’s dirty.

CockingASnook · 17/03/2022 13:48

Life’s too short to spend weekends washing cars. But it is a really good idea to clean salt and grit off in the winter so it doesn’t rust.

whatajuckingfoke · 17/03/2022 14:00

Never. It's not unusual for me to spot moss on my window edges Confused

DH takes the cars to the car wash very occasionally.

whatajuckingfoke · 17/03/2022 14:00

I do clean the lights and the license plate though.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/03/2022 14:07

Maybe 4 times a year?

My old car was 17 years old and had moss and lichen growing in the ridges for attaching a roof rack. It had spiders in each wing mirror too.

ThatsNotItAtAll · 17/03/2022 14:14

I wash mine less than once a year, it doesn't live in the garage because that's for motorbikes and I drive at least 25000 km per year 🤣 Its not rusty. Its quite a good dark grey which doesn't look radically different after washing compared to before.

We're not legally allowed to wash cars on our driveways or the road where I live (not UK) as drinking water comes from groundwater and washing cars is classed as contamination of the groundwater. Cars can only be washed at a carwash.

ThatsNotItAtAll · 17/03/2022 14:16

I've had my car 6 years - from new - and put 150000 on the clock. Not washing the outside doesn't seem to have done any harm.

the80sweregreat · 17/03/2022 17:25

My Dh is obsessed with having a clean car , in and out , and hates any mess in it at all.
He queued up for 30 mins today at the car wash! The sand storm yesterday brought everyone out to get them cleaned I think.
I wouldn't be as bad ( maybe get it done once a month ) , but it is nice seeing a clean sparkling car I think.
If your selling it can add a bit of value too if it's clean.

DifferentDrum · 17/03/2022 17:38

Literally never.

ReadyToMoveIt · 17/03/2022 17:43

Honestly there’s a bloke at the end of our road who washes his every weekend and every time I see him I think ‘surely you’ve got something better to do with your life’.

It’s called a hobby. I can spend 2 whole days cleaning a single car. It’s seriously satisfying!

User48751490 · 17/03/2022 18:29

@ChiefWiggumsBoy

I’ve never washed a car in my life and I’m not starting now.

I keep the windows clean, but otherwise it doesn’t make any difference to how it works so why bother? Is a vehicle to get me from A to B and that’s it.

If you can’t tell I am not a car person Grin

This with bells on.
Parky04 · 17/03/2022 18:33

Never. That's what rain is for!

I have one like this in my street too. He maybe needs to give something else a good polish🙊

The good people of the world Are washing their cars on their lunch break Hosing and scrubbing as best they can in skirts in suits

They drive their shiny Datsuns and Buicks
Back to the phone company, the record store too
Well, they're nothing like Billy and me

'Cause all I wanna do is have some fun
I got a feeling I'm not the only one
All I wanna do is have some fun
I got a feeling I'm not the only one

No you're not the only one Sheryl, me too!

the80sweregreat · 18/03/2022 15:14

Judging by the queues at the car washes around here today, lots of people like a clean car.

DetailMouse · 18/03/2022 16:26

When I was a child most men were out washing the car every weekend. Mum always said it was to avoid being in the house with the kids. Mum used to wash ours Grin In fact she still washes both their cars by hand, in her 70s and makes me feel very lazy for using a car wash.
