Words you detest

GoodnessTruthBeauty · 16/03/2022 00:31

I had to start this thread just to publicly gnash my teeth because I have yet again seen the word "untruth" in an online newspaper. When did this gruesome word ever become acceptable? Is it because people are too terrified to say "lie" or "liar"? It's such a mealy-mouthed, cowardly, cringy demonstration of euphemism.

Just piss off with your stupid "untruths".

The swear word beginning with C
Detest it and will never say it

Babyroobs · 16/03/2022 00:56

Belly. Just horrible.

SmudgeRolls · 16/03/2022 01:03

My bad

It really frustrates me

SmudgeRolls · 16/03/2022 01:03

Unlived

So odd, just say ‘Dead’

Spaghag · 16/03/2022 01:13

Grab in the context of "grab a coffee" or "grab a sandwich". Gives me the mental image of someone literally grabbing at the coffee and/or sandwich - possibly getting scalded with hot coffee in the process.

Portion. Totally irrational I know, but I just really hate the word.

Gifting, although I only really see this on local FB pages "is anyone gifting a washing machine".

There are more but I just can't think of them at the moment.

Hebeee · 16/03/2022 01:18

Lush....as in "that's really lush". Absolutely hate it.

Passed, instead of died.

My late mum refused to say the word "guts", for some strange reason preferring to call them "juts". It wasn't a pronunciation thing - she just didn't like the word!

Wammawink · 16/03/2022 01:18

The name Sylvia sets my teeth on edge. I have no rational explanation why

LaudamusTe · 16/03/2022 04:22

dump, especially when used in a recipe.

nameisnotimportant · 16/03/2022 04:24

Babe

FTstepmum · 16/03/2022 05:15

Pork.
Moist.
Suckle.
Eggy.
Groin.
Purse.

I don't know why, but these words make me feel queasy/uneasy.

hattie43 · 16/03/2022 05:43

The C word .
I've seen it more on this forum than anywhere else.
I hate it so much I don't even read what the person has posted because I know they're not my type of person . Illiterate and uneducated if they have no vocabulary except that .

hattie43 · 16/03/2022 05:44

Gob is another word I detest

Celoo · 16/03/2022 05:54

Nowadays. Something about it just really grates on me. See also “in this day and age”.

Cracking word, and I'm neither illiterate nor uneducated!

Agree with 'gifting' ..awful. The word 'butty' would also definitely be in my top ten!

deeplyambivalent · 16/03/2022 06:31

Lush, gorgeous, nom nom, cheeky, holibob,

And that thing where people say 'fast forward' as if they're writing a bad novel.

FuckThatBullshit · 16/03/2022 06:40

Delicious

Wingingthis · 16/03/2022 06:48

“En Route”

Another vote for dump

Couch (instead of sofa) gives me the rage

Pop as in pop to the shops, pop baby in the cot etc

Whatdramain2022 · 16/03/2022 07:00

Gotten. It was mostly used in North America and in a few regions in the UK. Now it's mainstream. It's in articles, novels etc. What's wrong with using got or have got? I want to get a red pen and change it whenever I read it.

Chikapu · 16/03/2022 07:40

Journey when it's used to define things, weight loss journey, grief journey, fitness journey etc.

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 16/03/2022 07:58

You really have a way with words OP 😂 I had never thought about it before but after this little doozie I'm fully on board with you 👏 you're so right and I will think of you whenever I see or hear the word!

Riapia · 16/03/2022 08:00

Gate.
When added on to the end of another word.
EG “ Partygate”.

Watergate was the name of the building.
FFS

YorkieTheRabbit · 16/03/2022 08:30

Hollibobs Angry
Curate when not being used in a museum or gallery setting
Robust
Eclectic
Words being used as a single - trouser, shoe etc

Teastheword · 16/03/2022 08:43

"treat", especially "sweet treat". Some people are constantly having"sweet treats" and I can't see how it can be a 'treat" if you have them all the time.

Sometimes the C word is the most fitting and appropriate descriptor.

I am in no way uneducated or illiterate thank you - I'm educated to MA level.

Actually studies show that people who swear more have a higher IQ.

But I get it that many find the word very offensive.
