Words you detest

I had to start this thread just to publicly gnash my teeth because I have yet again seen the word "untruth" in an online newspaper. When did this gruesome word ever become acceptable? Is it because people are too terrified to say "lie" or "liar"? It's such a mealy-mouthed, cowardly, cringy demonstration of euphemism.

Just piss off with your stupid "untruths".

OP posts:

Eateries
It’s almost always a clear sign it’s going to be a really shit restaurant or cafe

And foodies

Vulnerable because it has been misappropriated to mean needy

They feel odd in my mouth

WildRosie · 16/03/2022 17:42

Delectable
Fail, but only when it's used in completely the wrong context, i.e. instead of 'failure'.
Gift, gifted, gifting and so on. Wankers trying to turn a noun into a verb!

Calandor · 16/03/2022 17:42

Although, OP, the word untruth first appeared in the 15th Century... it's not new.

Calandor · 16/03/2022 17:43

@SmudgeRolls

Unlived

So odd, just say ‘Dead’

Unalived is used to avoid censorship monitors on certain social media sites like Instagram and TikTok which automatically flag words like dead, kill etc. They delete the comments sometimes automatically so unalived became the slang

This must be one of the most repeated threads on MN.

People seem to really hate moist. I like it.

traintraveller · 16/03/2022 17:46

I really hate the word super, its used everywhere and it seems by everyone apart from me. I also don't like pop as in pop to the shop/ pop in the oven. Oh and bliss, especially when put at the end of a sentence.

I think untruth has become common because people think it sounds more elevated than 'lie'. I like the blunt accusatory tone of lie personally.

Also, maybe it's because MPs are unable to call out 'lies' in the Commons but they can refer to 'untruths'. I think.

Cotswoldmama · 16/03/2022 18:01

I've only heard this on American TV show but when people say they did something 'on accident' instead of 'by accident' 😬😬😬

I don’t like pop (as in, just pop the baby in his cot!). I think because it implies that something can be done very quickly when it often can’t.

Can we have phrases we hate? I’ve noticed men describing good looking women as “She takes care of herself / looks after herself”. They mean that she’s over 30 (or some other arbitrary age) and is still hot - but think that praising her for self care will make them sound not-creepy.

I also hate “She’s going to break a few hearts when she’s older”. Ugh.

maddiemookins16mum · 16/03/2022 18:52

Spinster.
I’ve always hated it, mainly because there’s an assumption of what a Spinster may be like, compared to say….Batchelor.

echt · 16/03/2022 20:24

Baby, without my/our, etc.
Hate as in "I hate that..... instead of "I hate it when"
Gender when it should be sex
As above - cisgender.

While this boat has sailed: homophobia/Islamophobia, etc. Phobias are legitimate fears, e.g. spiders, and no-one judges. This illiterate yoking of political attitudes to the world of phobias is unhelpful.

Marynotsocontrary · 16/03/2022 21:33

The point is that phobias are irrational fears, rather than legitimate ones, echt.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 16/03/2022 21:40

Cohort makes me unreasonably angry. I have no idea why. I despise the word. If someone I know uses it, all I can think next time I speak to them is... they said cohort 🤨

My friend hates being called a liar, we always call her an untruther now. She's not a liar (or untruther, for that matter).

‘Mama’ in the context of things like ‘breastfeeding mamas’ or ‘you got this, Mama!’

Not very fair of me as I think it’s probably supposed to be empowering but I find it so irritating!
