Words you detest

GoodnessTruthBeauty · 16/03/2022 00:31

I had to start this thread just to publicly gnash my teeth because I have yet again seen the word "untruth" in an online newspaper. When did this gruesome word ever become acceptable? Is it because people are too terrified to say "lie" or "liar"? It's such a mealy-mouthed, cowardly, cringy demonstration of euphemism.

Just piss off with your stupid "untruths".

I cannot abide the word 'tasty' and I have no explanation as to why not.

It makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

RuralDwelling · 16/03/2022 08:59

I don't like the word 'grub' and I detest the word 'bitch' - it really upsets me. I would much rather be called a c*nt!

AndAsIfByMagic · 16/03/2022 09:07

Fur babies (cringe for the person using it)

Snacks

Hubby

cobblers123 · 16/03/2022 09:08

Cool - every bloody thing these days is "cool"

Awesome - over used and isn't, in pretty much every case, used to describe something that really is "awesome".

Gifted - whatever happened to plain old given

Curated - Aaaghhh!

emmathedilemma · 16/03/2022 09:10

Fabby
using "done" instead of "did"

DowntonCrabby · 16/03/2022 09:13

Gifted as a verb and invite as a noun.

Bogiesaremyonlyfriend · 16/03/2022 09:17

Nearby. I hate seeing it written down, dont know why but it really grates on me!!

LG93 · 16/03/2022 09:17

Plate, in the context of 'plating up' or saving a plate, keeping a plate to one side etc. No idea why

Andante57 · 16/03/2022 09:18

I cringed during the Olympics every time ‘medalled’ was used.

Not sure how long it’s been used as a verb.

Agree with loads of posts - I can’t stand ‘gotten’ either.

SalsaLove · 16/03/2022 09:20

I know that Americans get grief for “gotten” but Brits infuriate me with using “sat” instead of “sitting”.

Frenziedandfurious · 16/03/2022 09:22

Gotten
Horrid
Pop as in "pop to the shops"
Curate apart from museums
Colourway... What's wrong with colour?
The phrase "buckle up"
Equidistant
Quorate

BlaBlaSmthSmth · 16/03/2022 09:24

Actually come to think of it I agree with PP, I also dislike the word bitch more than cunt.
It might be the fact that I've heard it so many times on pre watershed TV where normally they wouldn't use swear words. It bothers me that this misogynistic insult is deemed appropriate when other swear words aren't.

I know men can be called 'bitch' too but the impression I get is that it's used against men as a way to downgrade them to the level of a lowly woman eg "don't be a little bitch" etc

Frenziedandfurious · 16/03/2022 09:24

Sorry also hate the word "triggering". Now it's massively overused and often weaponised if you dare to say the "wrong" thing.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 16/03/2022 09:32

I don't know why but I really hate the word "fuming".

I really don't like the use of the singular when it should be a plural ie "a red lip".

Clarice99 · 16/03/2022 09:33

I loathe 'can I get' as in 'can I get a cup of tea'.

The word 'hun' makes me cringe.

'Should/Could/Would of' - Should HAVE. Could HAVE. Would HAVE. Angry

BadgeronaMoped · 16/03/2022 09:35

Some of these are so funny (I hate lots of words/phrases/misspellings). Mine at the moment is "setting", "the hospital setting", "the education setting", "the childcare setting".
The hospital, the school, the nursery, you mean.

cobblers123 · 16/03/2022 09:36

De-cluttering
Fur-baby - Sounds really soppy, I have a cat, he is just that, a cat
Bitch - yes, I hate it too
C-word - I don't know any woman who uses this word in my circle of friends, family etc.
Hubby - my all time most loathsome word for husband. Another soppy, stupid word.

floridamanatee · 16/03/2022 10:42

@Spaghag I can't stand the word portion either. People asking for. 'Portion of chips' makes me embarrassed.

IcakethereforeIam · 16/03/2022 11:00

Dislike all those euphemisms for 'died'. I understand why people used them and wouldn't call them on it though.

Dislike 'verbing' nouns, but I probably use a lot that have weathered into the language.

I like the word butty, but not so keen on sandwich. Perhaps it's a regional thing, I keep hearing saahndwich. Pahss me a sahndwich, no I'll grab a butty, or a sarnie.

PivotPivotPivottt · 16/03/2022 11:01

Stinky 🤢
Super
Poorly

midsomermurderess · 16/03/2022 11:05

I agree about 'poorly'. It sounds so infantile.

HesterShaw1 · 16/03/2022 11:08

When someone uses "leccie/lecky" for electricity, it makes me want to kill them.

CailleachGranda · 16/03/2022 11:14

Hubby
Hun
Yummy
Yum
Tummy
Poorly
Jobsworth

And should of/could of

Parpophone · 16/03/2022 11:18

Boob.

Fine (just about) if you are a 12 year old boy making a calculator display "rude" words.

Doubly revolting if used as a verb.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 16/03/2022 11:18

When planning something, "going forward".

So unnecessary. It's not as if we can go back in time!
