Words you detest

I had to start this thread just to publicly gnash my teeth because I have yet again seen the word "untruth" in an online newspaper. When did this gruesome word ever become acceptable? Is it because people are too terrified to say "lie" or "liar"? It's such a mealy-mouthed, cowardly, cringy demonstration of euphemism.

Just piss off with your stupid "untruths".

@Sandsnake

‘Mama’ in the context of things like ‘breastfeeding mamas’ or ‘you got this, Mama!’

Not very fair of me as I think it’s probably supposed to be empowering but I find it so irritating!

OH YES.

Usually describes someone who thinks they're superior as they use a sling and cosleep

jowly · 16/03/2022 22:16

Brekkie
Cuppa
Sarnie

Among lots of others

spotcheck · 16/03/2022 22:17

@Wingingthis

“En Route”

Another vote for dump

Couch (instead of sofa) gives me the rage

Pop as in pop to the shops, pop baby in the cot etc

What's wrong with couch?
JustPlainKnackered · 16/03/2022 22:20

@Andante57
I can't abide 'reach out', it's so moronic. My bank sent me an email the other day asking if the other joint account holder could 'reach out' to them with some details.

Scooby5kids · 16/03/2022 22:20

"Bespoke"

When someone on your Facebook is trying to set up business trying to sell some crappy homemade "bespoke" handwritten, bullshit quotes, with buttons stuck inside ikea photo frames or similar wooden, done before a 1000 times, tat.

ufucoffee · 16/03/2022 22:21

Passed instead of died
Gifted
Milky
Phlegm

Snoozeee · 16/03/2022 22:24

Amazeballs

Who in the world uses this stupid language. Oh that's right, the stupid!

Katyppp · 16/03/2022 22:34

Confused when used incorrectly, which is becoming more prevalent.
Recent examples on mn include confusion over why people voted Tory and confusion over how people will pay their energy bills.
If you’re annoyed about something just own it, don’t pretend to be confused, please.

Davros · 16/03/2022 22:40

Mama
Vulnerable
Fib
Poorly
Reach out

cafedesreves · 16/03/2022 22:41

@Riapia

Yes and chocoholic, workaholic etc
ilovesooty · 16/03/2022 22:44

@DowntonCrabby

Gifted as a verb and invite as a noun.
Cringe as an adjective.

White lie - you're either lying or you're not.

MyLifeNow20 · 16/03/2022 22:48

I hate the word beginning with C

Also my ex MIL/FIL/EXH used to use the words 'it looks like an abortion' commenting on the food I had cooked

They also used a name 'cleaners' when referring to my DD dad, take him to the cleaners.

Never really got what they were talking about but now many years later I think it is disgusting

HRTQueen · 16/03/2022 22:49

Nope

Often used on MN. Often with a passive aggressive response

Knuckle. The term knuckled down makes me feel a bit sick

Adults babying words (usually adding a y or ie) it’s sometimes ok when talking to a young child just about

scryingeyes · 16/03/2022 23:06

folks

welliewarmer · 16/03/2022 23:06

@Hebeee

Lush....as in "that's really lush". Absolutely hate it.

Passed, instead of died.

My late mum refused to say the word "guts", for some strange reason preferring to call them "juts". It wasn't a pronunciation thing - she just didn't like the word!

I hate lush and passed too.

And dump, particularly when used by my DH referring to a good snowfall (whilst skiing).

Also hate quirky.

echt · 16/03/2022 23:18

@Marynotsocontrary

The point is that phobias are irrational fears, rather than legitimate ones, echt.
I know that. Not sure what point you're making.

If homophobia/Islamaphobia are irrational fears, why are they used as an accusation?

Marynotsocontrary · 17/03/2022 02:11

@echt
The point I'm making is that they're called phobias because they don't make sense. I'm saying phobias are not the legitimate fears you said they are. They are irrational fears and/or extreme to the point of requiring treatment.

GoodnessTruthBeauty · 17/03/2022 02:38

@scryingeyes yes about folks!!

@Calandor on that note as a Brit in the USA I have to defend gotten. It was correct English when introduced hundreds of years ago but the usage has died out in the UK but explains why we have forgotten and "ill gotten gains".

I have been here too long and gotten used to it.

Rank, referring to anything apart military.
Lush, ditto, well,apart meadows etc.
Grim, yadayadayada, apart reaper.

ZittiEBuoni · 17/03/2022 08:44

So many recipes for 'garlicky' things lately. I love garlic but I won't cook any recipe with the word 'garlicky' in the title as it makes me feel sick.

Sparkles29 · 17/03/2022 08:48

Blah blah blah
Yeah no
Re-group
Do you Know what I mean? (After simple statements...) Blush

valleyofadventure · 17/03/2022 08:58

Superb; Alan Partridge/Richard Madely territory, it’s like nails down a blackboard

Nom-nom, lush etc; revolting

Cis; gives me the RAGE, don’t get me started

Gut rot - my friends used to say this in the 80s when they had a stomach ache, used to make me shudder even then

Gifted; just don’t

cobblers123 · 17/03/2022 09:42

Telly box!

LemonsLimes · 17/03/2022 09:49

If we're allowed phrases, I don't like "letting someone go" for sacking.

cobblers123 · 17/03/2022 10:30

Gut rot - this I remember from way back but it was always used to describe a cheap alcoholic drink like cider or someone's home made beer or wine.
