Just catching up!
I live near Donna Nook, an RAF bombing range. Business as usual here. Bomb practice Wednesdays and Thursdays. We've had the odd American plane over but did read in our local rag they were scheduled to be there.
Next door neighbour in the army, still on short notice but not expected to be sent anywhere anytime soon.

As for the alerts, the Sunday it all kicked off in Ukraine our local paper ran a piece on the new alert system. Online comments lit up with how irresponsible it was to report this now and the system was not new. Our local paper loves to put the willies up everyone though.

We had sirens locally. I don't remember where but I knew they existed. I was born in 1972 and remember the nuclear leaflets coming through the door and as a teenager being absolutely terrified. I certainly don't feel as frightened now.

Flapjacker48 · 16/03/2022 05:21

@Rowgtfc72 The nuclear leaflet "protect and survive" was never issued to the public in that way. It was available to buy from 1980 (not many sold) and as some journalists saw it it was mentioned and small bits shown in newspapers. If anyone does have an original copy with out a price tag on then it is worth a few quid as they were only issued in small quantities to council emergany planning officers and the county police office responsible for "war duties"

Only exception was a similar book issues to all households on the isle of Mann

Fluke today, I got no greens.

I solved Semantle #46 in 15 guesses. My first guess had a similarity of 4.72. My first word in the top 1000 was at guess #15. My penultimate guess had a similarity of 16.65. semantle.novalis.o

@Tuba437 thanks for the positive news update.

whytcvv · 16/03/2022 06:34

Is there any realistic chance of a stalemate and what would that look like?

Russia won't want to lose and are struggling to win, so could they just kind of phase the war out?

I could be mistaken but is that what happened in Georgia?

bluewanda · 16/03/2022 06:40

Woke up this morning feeling so much anger. Putin is pure evil.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/03/2022 06:50

anyone catch newsnight in Helsinki?
Finland is at risk but one suggestion is that while they join nato, with sweden, they get protection while going through the negotiations - sounds like a very reasonable request.
doesnt seem that ukraine will ever be able to join nato? unless i am misunderstanding
Putin is such a bully

Natsku · 16/03/2022 07:01

I didn't stay up late enough to watch newsnight (two hours ahead here), it'll be on iplayer right? I know an ex-NATO secretary general suggested now is the best time for Finland and Sweden to join NATO, while Russia is occupied elsewhere, and he expects the application would be approved more or less overnight.

It seems less and less likely that Ukraine will join NATO, unless Russia goes in a much more moderate direction after Putin. Fingers crossed it does, and soon.

OMGTTC · 16/03/2022 07:03

Thank you all for this thread, it’s so informative and slightly less panic-inducing than scrolling through the news apps. Trying to take hope from peace talks, although I totally agree with PPs who’ve said how wrong it is that Ukraine have to concede anything to Putin, vile man.

TokyoSushi · 16/03/2022 07:04

Morning folks, born in the 80's so not really aware of any sirens or anything to go with Russia at the time, although I would have been fascinated.

Hoping for more positive news on the peace talks today.

MagicFox · 16/03/2022 07:05

Let's all pray

MagicFox · 16/03/2022 07:06

For the success of the peace talks, I meant! That sounds horrible on its own

Yes they need to join asap, cow towing to Putin's wishes hasn't worked, though at the moment, his military is so weak, its unlikely he could do much up there but what he could do is conjure up border disputes etc and that alone stops a NATO application.

No Russia is getting the pressure. They are running out of time, ammunitions and money. The campaign is dragging. they cannot afford a stalemate.

Something has to happen.

Bother. We used to have a copy, but I have no idea where it went to. I vaguely remember stuff about taking doors off hinges, propping them up against a wall and sheltering behind it.

He is right about the timing, but as a former senior NATO representative, he is not a neural party. Sweden and Finland have known fir years they would be able to join, and it is up to them tomdecide what international treaties they want to be party to.

Be careful what you wish for.

What sort of 'something' do you think is likeliest, from an invader who may or may not be feeling time and cashflow issues, but who has a large arsenal of non-conventional weapons?

dibly · 16/03/2022 07:41

Also born in 1972 and remember delivering nuclear disarmament Liberal leaflets around 1979. My biggest fear was the 4 minute warning with my dad working a 20 minute drive away.

MarshaBradyo · 16/03/2022 07:42

Really good interview with China spokesperson (although not sure of title) on Times radio

He talked about why their position as it was, general morning noise made it difficult but the main aim seemed to be avoiding nuclear escalation which I appreciated.

Will see if there’s a re-listen service

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 16/03/2022 07:45

I don't wish for anything. What a strange thing to say.

It's the way I see the situation. I may be wrong, your opinion may vary.

Sweden sees NATO membership as a surrender of sovereignty. Sweden wants to decide for itself whether or not it gets drawn into military conflict rather than handing that decision over to someone else. The Ukraine situtation has meant an increase in conversation about NATO membership but it's still not something Sweden wants to do.
cloudberry · 16/03/2022 08:00

Marking place

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/03/2022 08:01

ukraine is not going to join nato any time soon
ukraine may have to completely back down surely

I remember going to my friends house in the next village and cycling like mad in between because I was more than 4 minutes away from both houses.

Yeah true, he's not a neutral party so much take his words with a pinch of salt. This is the first time there's been a real impetus to join, and the timing is right but the need for broad consensus first means I think its unlikely to happen anytime soon. Though hopefully I'm wrong.

Just watched the Newsnight and is it that hard for them to ask someone how to pronounce their name before speaking it? Urgh, hurts my ears to hear such mispronunciations!
