@shreddednips Yes I agree it's mostly PR, try to make it look like Ukraine is making a major concession so Putin can claim some kind of 'win'. Which is ridiculous but so is 90% of diplomacy.

Papertyger · 15/03/2022 22:47

The way she talks, when do they think this should happen though?

How many countries have been invaded by Russia over the past 100/150 years > maybe they should form an alliance on that basis?

Why does Russia get to call the shots, why is it Russia ( Putin)) that is allowed to be upset by Nato aggresion> Who has ever invaded them in the past 100 Years and succeded? Maybe they should join together and form a seperate alliance to Nato specifically for countering Russian aggression.

dreamingbohemian · 15/03/2022 22:48

@Ijsbear

Key Takeaways
Russian forces are unlikely to launch offensive operations to encircle Kyiv larger than the scattered Russian attacks observed northwest of Kyiv targeting Irpin on March 14 and Guta-Mezhyhirska on March 15 within the coming week but may launch further tactical attacks.
Russian forces continued to assault Mariupol from the east and west.
Russian forces did not conduct major offensive operations toward northeastern Kyiv in the past 24 hours.
Russian forces attempting to encircle Kharkiv continue to face supply shortages, particularly regarding ammunition.
The Russian military falsely claimed to have captured the entirety of Kherson Oblast on March 15 but did not conduct any major operations toward either Zaporizhya or Mykolayiv.
Russia is unlikely to launch an unsupported amphibious operation against Odesa until Russian forces secure a ground line of communication to the city, but Russian Naval Infantry retain the capability to conduct a landing along the Black Sea coast.</div></div>

@Ijsbear can I ask where you pulled this from?

It's really quite staggering when you look at it.

Kharkiv is only about 40 km from the Russian border and they still can't encircle it, much less take it.

scaevola · 15/03/2022 22:48

@holliem91

Thanks for confirming *@scaevola*

My heart sunk seeing that!

It's quite a lesson on why not to trust Twitter.

This also did the rounds a few days ago, and was widely debunked - but look, here it is popping up again already.

TokyoSushi · 15/03/2022 22:50

Apologies for causing alarm folks, was not my intention, just curious, thanks for clarifying.

I was just posting something from the BBC
cakeorwine · 15/03/2022 23:06

I was just thinking about how the USA has been adamant that countries such as Iran can't get technology to develop nuclear weapons and will impose sanctions on them.

I should imagine that this current situation will make countries who aren't part of an alliance want to try to develop nuclear technology to keep themselves safe. And countries such as the USA won't have any right to say they shouldn't.

Papertyger · 15/03/2022 23:11

Yes, sorry The way, I was ranting at the idea, not the poster.

What a joke this all is. I have just seen a Sky interviewer making difficult remarks about Iran and Saudi - as Boris goes cap in hand to these vile places for oil.
Boris himself made that "gaff" didnt he when he was FS re Saudi.

Its late at night and I am tired - I swing with how I feel all the time but I do wonder, why are we doing business with these evil regimes? Why?

Of course to cut them off rifht now would be catasrophic for us all, maybe it would be better for us all if we didnt access petrol anymore andit was strictly rationed for trains and busses and amublances - police and we did have to try and get around a different way.

( I say that as someone who said after being a late to driving, I LOVE my car and PT is dreadful) but I think having electric bikes and stuff and the feeling that yes, I cant drive my car as much means we dont do business with evil nasty repressive regimes I could live with it??

Wrongkindofovercoat · 15/03/2022 23:14

I was going to ask a few threads back what would happen if we had an alert as I wasn't aware that we had any sirens.... I guess now we know!

I have to ask you @TokyoSushi, how old are you ? I only ask because during the 80's we were well aware of where the sirens were, I suppose if you are younger than me and didn't live through the 'two tribes' time, it must feel new and alien.

Papertyger · 15/03/2022 23:15
  • the spell check on my computer is turned off and I cannot see how to turn it on.

Cake I think we are going to see a new alliance between repressive nasty regimes that dont believe in freedom of will and choice.

Them against us.

Its strange that China has chosen to go agaisnt us when there are no strong eccomies on its side.

Papertyger · 15/03/2022 23:16

I was a child of the 80s and never aware of a siren.

We had sirens in the 80s?

Are you sure? I don't remember them.

Ah well you missed a treat, we used to wave at ours as we passed by, might take a little drive tomorrow and see if it still there. The mobile alert might not work for us along with the new security feature for online shopping , being in the 10% of the population with no decent mobile coverage.

The geopolitics and the collision of natural resources, geography, political ideologies and the elephant in the room of global co-operation that is needed for tackling climate change is something that can't be ignored.

There is a scene in Independence Day when the people of the world are united against a common threat.

Sometimes I think we need to be shown that we are one world and we need something to unite us.

Wrongkindofovercoat · 15/03/2022 23:31

They didn't actually go off because nobody actually sent a nuclear bomb our way. Still used to give it a cheery wave as we went past.

Papertyger · 15/03/2022 23:31

Just having a quick google re china army and came across this - quite a sobering list at first until :

But China’s arsenal of headline-grabbing weapons, and seemingly unstoppable military growth masks an opaque command system, endemic corruption, and questions over the quality of its recruits.

The corruption stems largely from a tradition of nepotism and favouritism, and a general lack of oversight, while recruitment is suffering because despite some incentives, the younger, well-educated Chinese that the military wants are more attracted to the booming private sector.

Papertyger · 15/03/2022 23:34

Also I noticed that Tone was commmenting today on this, but have we heard from G Bush who declared he knew Putin, and Obama?

youhadmeatjello · 15/03/2022 23:34

@Papertyger have I missed something major? Have china gone against us? Just catching up with the thread now

Flapjacker48 · 15/03/2022 23:41

The UK's cold war siren system was dismantled in 1991 ish. The only working ones left are those that were re-purposed as flood warning systems. There are still some sirens in situ which are not removed due to be being in hard to access places, but the mechanisms to sound them are long gone.

Basically Fylingdales would have about 15-20 minutes maximum to take any actions in the event of a highly unlikely incoming strike on the UK. I highly doubt the "UK phone alert" thing would be activated, if it could even be done instantaneously.

ChitChatChatter · 15/03/2022 23:54

'Going back to WW2, the USSR were our besties, just as long as they were anti-fascist.'

My enemy's enemy is my friend.

It wasn't to do with being anti-fascist, the Russians and the Germans initially had a mutual non-aggression pact at the start of WWII which allowed each of them to separately pursue their own agendas. Hitler then invaded Russia in 1941 and got within 20 miles of Moscow and was only stopped, if memory serves, by the Soviets throwing huge resources in terms of people and equipment at him.

ChitChatChatter · 15/03/2022 23:55

At which point the Soviets aligned themselves with the Allied forces.

BreadInCaptivity · 16/03/2022 00:16

@dreamingbohemian

The ISW (Institute for the Study of War) is posting regular commentary on their assessment of the invasion of Ukraine.

I believe this is the source for the post by ljsbear.
