I just found out you can’t put a chopping board in the dishwasher unless you want it to break 😕

as my family are now laughing at me, it made me wonder what other things have people learnt in adulthood that maybe others assume should be intrinsically known?

@godmum56

Does everyone know that bombay duck is actually a fish?
Shock NO. That's surprised me. Why the F is it called DUCK then?

The bird dumps being wee and poo combined has surprised me too. Never knew that. Also, regarding 'capers...' I have never heard of them in my life!

Also, can the naysayers and 'How thick are some people on here' posters bore off? No-one needs your shitty negativity.

Oddbutnotodd · 14/03/2022 13:31

You have to multiply the cubic meter readings by roughly 11 I think. So a much bigger number. My gas cost was 2.5p per kwh; going up to 7p in April. It’s the standing charge increase as well that will make a big difference. Sorry to derail the thread.

Nb need to check my cotton reels!

MurmuratingStarling · 14/03/2022 13:32

@HRTQueen

Crocodiles can climb trees and fences. They have just kept this secret for years

fauna means animals Shock I thought it meant bushes and weeds

Why is the little piggy carry a little shopping basket covered with a red and white gingham tea cloth if he shopping. Could he be delivering dredging baked bread to friends ?

WOAH! Didn't know the croc and fauna ones !!!
Handsnotwands · 14/03/2022 13:37

Can someone explain the two finger scrolling laptop thing please? I feel like I’m missing out on something important

@CarltonPeach

Wait!!!…. There’s TWO Channel tunnels??

Oh, I thought the trains passed each other and you could wave to the other train….
Really thought that PP meant the tunnel workers dug their own graves… 😱. Til I read on and saw she meant for the machinery!! Feel sad about the machinery now…😳

From the Eurostar website: “ The Channel Tunnel is made of three separate tunnels running parallel to each other. One train tunnel running south (UK to France), one train tunnel running north (France to UK) and one service tunnel. All three tunnels were drilled below the seabed and link Folkestone in Kent to Coquelles in Pas-de-Calais.”
Soubriquet · 14/03/2022 13:48

Speaking of Miss Rabbit, we know Mummy Rabbit and Miss Rabbit are different people, but did you know that Miss Rabbit is not working multiple jobs. It is literally another Miss Rabbit, similar to what a rabbit would birth. Many rabbits. So the one working on the train, is different to the one working at the store

But she got an award for being hardworking. How did they decide who got to go to London to get the award from the Queen?
I learnt recently that pineapples try to eat you as you are eating them, which is why they can make your mouth sore or tingly. It's due to the enzyme it contains (bromelain) which is also what stops your pineapple jelly from setting.

blogs.unimelb.edu.au/sciencecommunication/2012/10/07/the-flesh-eating-pineapple/
Thats also why they make a great skin exfoliator, try rubbing over your face and washing off, tis great.

I think it means there's a 40% chance of rain.

MissConductUS · 14/03/2022 13:58

@CremeEggThief

Ooh can I share? Despite having a degree in English, a PGCE in primary teaching and working in clerical/admin jobs for a few years, I only recently learned that if you look closely at type you can tell the difference between 0 and O! I'm mid-40s and it's blown my mind!
In computer programming, the two characters are distinguished by putting a dot in the middle of the zero or a slash through it.

My DH learned this weekend that if you are scraping ice off the windshield of a car you have to be very careful with the wiper blades, as they get frozen to the glass. Fortunately, a car parts store put new ones on for him at a cost of $60. Smile

Am unsure about the Multiple Miss Rabbits. Couldn't see the definitive authorial statement but Peppa Pig World (the theme park) says -

Miss Rabbit is a very busy rabbit. She has loads of jobs at Peppa Pig Land. She wants to go to work when she is poorly but her twin sister Mummy Rabbit insists on helping her out. Because Miss Rabbit had loads of jobs to do everyone had to help. Daddy Pig helped at the ice cream kiosk, Mummy Rabbit helped at the local supermarket and Grandad dog drove the bus. Everyone found it really difficult to do all Miss Rabbit’s jobs.

Miss Rabbit is so dedicated at her jobs

Miss Rabbits (Noted the ambiguity from the absence of an apostrophe) Jobs
Firefighter (The Fire Engine, Doctor Hamster’s Tortoise, The Queen)
China Shop Owner (Mr Bull in a China Shop)
Recycling plant owner/car crusher operator (Recycling)
Air Steward (Flying on Holiday)
Cashier at the local supermarket, museum, aquarium gift shop
Shop Assistant (Mrs Rabbits Day off)
Rescue Helicopter pilot at Peppa Pig World (Mrs Rabbit’s Helicopter)
Hot Air Balloon pilot (The Balloon Ride)
Face painter (The school Fete)
Crane Operator (Recycling)
Taxi driver (Mrs Rabbits Taxi)
Bus driver (school bus trip, school camp)
Gift shop owner on the Moon (The Golden Boots)
Train driver (The Queen)

@BiscuitLover3678

I’ve had multiple items melt in my house because the sunlight came into my bedroom and reflected off my facial mirror. Absolutely melted! I always put a tea towel over the mirror now.

When I was younger if I’d forgotten shaving foam I’d use body wash instead. Ugh! Bad idea. Conditioner is basically the same as shaving foam.

Loads of internal fridge thermometers go shit after time. Get a cheap one from Amazon and check. Will make your food last so much longer and stop you getting minor sickness.

Me too! Except it's bed sheets that have burnt 😱 I now always cover it!
AnchorWHAT · 14/03/2022 14:01

All hail to my fellow kitchen explosion disaster people, yes lentils harden in a ridiculously short time, still finding bits on the unit doors! Pressure cookers really are safe as long as you cool them under a cold tap or leave to cool before attempting to open, which is where i went very very wrong 😃

Move 2 fingers on your laptop touchpad to scroll a webpage up and down

On mine as well you can tap with 3 fingers to open the search function, tap with 2 fingers to right click, and scroll with 3 fingers to show your desktop

Gwenhwyfar · 14/03/2022 14:04

@Lovesabadboy

Seems obvious because it is right there, in the name, but I didn't know, until a couple of years ago (I am 54) that bone china had actual animal bone in it! Shock
I'm learning this now.
SomethingOnce · 14/03/2022 14:05

The little piggy went to the market to buy some artisan sourdough, as we all know.

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 14/03/2022 14:13

@hopeful777

I thought capers were fish too… avoided them for so many years thinking I’d hate them. Maybe because they sound like kippers? 🧐
It’s because capers and anchovies (fish) are equally vile and salty
VeryMuchFlaggingMinty · 14/03/2022 14:15

The channel tunnel isn’t directly through the sea, you don’t see the fish on the other side

🤯

I have never travelled on it as I always thought it went through water and if anything went wrong the result would be a mass drowning.

Feel a right pillock now Blush.

ClawedButler · 14/03/2022 14:18

That Lefou from Beauty and the Beast is also the voice of Olaf.

I mean....it's fairly obvious. But no. Didn't dawn on me until after multiple viewings of both films.

That’s what I thought it meant.
RhymesWithBouquet · 14/03/2022 14:26

You can grow your own pineapples if you plant the leafy bit at the top in compost!

Also, google swingers + pineapples... Wink

You're welcome Grin

Mummy1232016 · 14/03/2022 14:30

@godmum56

I haven't just learned this but did you know that Guterman thread reels open up at one end to store needles?
Whatttt!! Did not know that!
Siepie · 14/03/2022 14:31

@thisplaceisweird

I did enjoy @thisplaceisweird being WRONG though, at least the others were polite about it grin

Yes very funny - I am happy to be WRONG but I will wait until there's an article not from the sun or daily mail!

How about from the Met Office itself?

"Chance of precipitation
For example, a 70% chance of rain represents a 7 in 10 chance that precipitation will fall at some point during that period.

Chance of precipitation represents how likely it is that rain (or other precipitation: sleet, snow, hail, drizzle etc.) will fall from the sky at a certain time."
