I just found out you can’t put a chopping board in the dishwasher unless you want it to break 😕

as my family are now laughing at me, it made me wonder what other things have people learnt in adulthood that maybe others assume should be intrinsically known?

Oh back to fish, in British Sign Language there are two signs for fish, one is for when it is fish swimming, the other is for fish that is bein eaten.

"They have different words for these in Spanish too - pez vs pescado.
Like Pig and Pork, Cow and Beef, Deer and Venison. Makes sense.

Might there be another for the verb 'to Fish' as well?"

the pig/porc thing dates from 1066 www.mashed.com/219581/the-real-reason-cow-meat-is-called-beef/

@Andylion

“ I did not know about Moose and Orcas. Mind blown.”

I was suspicious of this and googled. Apparently the biggest predator of moose is the wolf.

I wonder if its a one word two meanings thing? Wolves are the biggest predator in that they kill and eat the most, but orcas are the biggest predator in that they are fuckin huge

@PerseverancePays

Love it *@sashh* that you managed to squeeze in a flower, periwinkle, in your list of seafood.
The common periwinkle or winkle (Littorina littorea) is a species of small edible whelk or sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusc that has gills and an operculum, and is classified within the family Littorinidae, the periwinkles. This is a robust intertidal species with a dark and sometimes banded shell.

There is a flower with the same name though.

Re the 'Gils are bad at maths', I went to a girls' school, my maths teacher encouraged us to use our 'feminine intuition'

@Pyri

Pineapples grow on the ground

@CouldIhaveaword

I learned yesterday that hand sanitiser is excellent for removing stains and glue from walls. It also removes the paint as well as door varnish.
Also good for removing small skin tags, dab 3 times a day for about a week.
charliebear78 · 17/03/2022 14:19

Going to try the skin tag thing..will report back

@Fairislefandango

Confused How can anyone get to 30 and not know that?!
How can somebody's parent never have explained it is what I want to know...
CouldIhaveaword · 18/03/2022 08:59

@Deadringer

I learned the 'lefty loosey righty tighty' from Phil on Modern Family, it's been very useful.
It just confuses me. Only half of the object is turning right, the other half is going left.

I also struggle with scrolling and swiping. Swipe left means the finger goes left, or you want to see the image to the left. DH says scroll down, I drag down. He tuts. LTB?

And another thing...'can we bring the meeting forward?'... closer to the current time, ie backward, or forward into the future?

ResurrectionInfinity · 18/03/2022 09:57

Yes, I found that odd as well. The only way it can make sense is if you are facing the future and all future events are facing you with their backs to the future so if you bring them towards you they are going forwards.
The arrows on my walking poles make no bloody sense either. I instinctively do the right thing as long as I don’t look at them.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/03/2022 10:57

@CouldIhaveaword your action is lefty loose right tighty. So your hand turns the knob left

CouldIhaveaword · 18/03/2022 11:07

Not possible to 'turn' something left. The top goes left, the bottom goes right. That's why clockwise was invented. And the hands of a clock go right then left.

SleepingStandingUp · 18/03/2022 11:36

You're over thinking. It's a simplistic line for a simplistic action. Hold the knob in your hand. Twist anticlockwise. The fingers on top move to the left before moving downwards. It isn't a science lesson, it's a knob or a bolt etc.

Imo swipe is sideways. Scrolling down means going to the content that's further down the page than the bit you were looking at. I don't get what your dh is wanting you to do!

Not possible to 'turn' something left

@CouldIhaveaword - I'll have to remember that next time the satnav tells me to turn left and I rotate the top of my steering wheel to the left.

OK, so technically you are correct that if one part of a revolving object goes left then the other part is going right, but it's all about a well-understood point of view.

After all, from the point of view of inside the clock, the hands go anti-clockwise Grin

ResurrectionInfinity · 18/03/2022 16:43

next time the satnav tells me to turn left and I rotate the top of my steering wheel to the left.

That could work! Left as in the way you turn a steering wheel to turn left. That seems unambiguous….
I think it’s probably best if you can get it into your kinesthetic memory, but CouldIhaveaword doesn’t seem to want advice.

dementedpixie · 18/03/2022 17:13

If you scroll down you move your fingers up the screen. Moving your fingers down the screen scrolls up.

I'm open to advice, but I certainly don't need diagrams to understand the theory. I genuinely don't have an automatic response to 'turn the knob left', whereas anti for off works for me. I guess everyone's different.
ResurrectionInfinity · 18/03/2022 20:07

No, I don’t either. It’s best not to think about it.

FurbleSocks · 18/03/2022 20:33

@HRTQueen

Crocodiles can climb trees and fences. They have just kept this secret for years

fauna means animals Shock I thought it meant bushes and weeds

Why is the little piggy carry a little shopping basket covered with a red and white gingham tea cloth if he shopping. Could he be delivering dredging baked bread to friends ?

Oh Jesus that photo is terrifying! Those fences were the only thing helping me sleep at night. I can never travel again!!
WomanStanleyWoman · 18/03/2022 20:57

Not possible to 'turn' something left. The top goes left, the bottom goes right.

I think you’ll find most people aren’t that pedantic.

I think you'll find that it has nothing to do with pedantry, it's to do with an automatic response to an instruction
PyongyangKipperbang · 18/03/2022 22:10

The pedantry is strong with this thread

PyongyangKipperbang · 18/03/2022 22:13

With skin tags.....

I read years ago that tying a thread around it would cut off the blood supply so it would die and drop off. Except that my skin tag was as the top of my arm so I needed to hold one end of the thread between my teeth to tighten it. I misjudged and basically just cut it off with the thread. Hurt like a shit for a few minutes but it never grew back and barely bled at all.

LoveMyPiano · 18/03/2022 22:47

When flying to New Zealand (North Island) from LHR, when you land at (on?) Japan after 11 hours, you still have another 11 hours to go.

Especially awful if you bagged an upgrade for the first half of the trip. but not the second.
