I just found out you can’t put a chopping board in the dishwasher unless you want it to break 😕

as my family are now laughing at me, it made me wonder what other things have people learnt in adulthood that maybe others assume should be intrinsically known?

What about the costs?

Breastfeeding is free.

There is a lot of research out there.

LadyCordeliaFitzgerald · 14/03/2022 14:53

On the subject of raisins and grapes the French term for a bunch of grapes is grappe de raisins so both the term grape and raisin are mistranslations.

Aworldofmyown · 14/03/2022 14:53

Saltwater sandals are excellent.

I think you're on the wrong thread! Smile

@MattDillonsEyebrows

I have only just learnt that the spinny sprayers in your dishwasher come out and you should clean them.

I have been cursing my dishwashers for years, as it was rubbish and things would come out dirtier than they went in. I cleaned it with a dishwasher cleaner every month, when I topped up the salt and rinse aid but that only seemed to last a week or so, before having to rewash loads of things.

My mil told me about the sprayers. Took them out, and yep, they were gross and many of the holes were blocked. Cleaned and put back in, it's like a different dishwasher! Everything is sparkling when it comes out.

Absolute game changer!

I too recently found that the arms came off, I'd spent ages poking the holes with a cocktail stick. However, make sure they are clipped back on securely, I managed to not do so and had to run the machine again.

My DH learned this weekend that if you are scraping ice off the windshield of a car you have to be very careful with the wiper blades, as they get frozen to the glass. Fortunately, a car parts store put new ones on for him at a cost of $60.

When we lived in Germany one of the winter preps was to rub a bit of vaseline, or similar, on the rubber door seals, damage there can be far more expensive than $60! If I'm using de-icer the first place I spray is round the windscreen wipers.

Raisin comes from latin racemus meaning bunch of grapes - and the word raceme still means cluster of flowers. Grappe also means cluster.
WomanStanleyWoman · 14/03/2022 15:18

@DameHelena

That raisins are dried grapes. Funny that, as I love grapes but hate raisins

There are some really stupid comments here but this wins
Why is that so stupid?

It’s not stupid at all. Loads of people like fresh fruit but not dried.
TatianaBis · 14/03/2022 15:21

Also Grappa is an Italian drink made from grapes that goes back to the Romans.

DameHelena · 14/03/2022 15:22

WomanStanleyWoman, I know, that's why I'm asking. I don't get why thisplaceisweird calls it 'stupid'.

Ddot · 14/03/2022 15:25

Raisins and sultanas are the same, just dried differently

Here it's common to just lift the wiper arms up off the glass if you're expecting snow. This was DS's car and he neglected to do so. Ours are in the garage most of the time, so it's not commonly a problem.

I hadn't heard about the door seals, thanks for the tip.

DameHelena, I think the bumblebees are saying we're in their faces and they're telling us in no uncertain terms to fuck off.

I was agreeing, not criticising Smile

"There are some really stupid comments here but this wins"

I was initially surprised by this as well, but I suppose it seems more obvious to those of us who know grapes are raisins in French.

WomanStanleyWoman · 14/03/2022 15:36

I was about 20 before I realised there was no such place as ‘Marbaia’ in Spain. I thought ‘Marbella’ was pronounced as written and ‘Marbaia’ was a separate place.

(I know lots of people still mispronounce Marbella, but I think I went the extra mile by inventing a separate place Grin)

Gwenhwyfar · 14/03/2022 15:36

" Or who confuse capers with a type of fish, which just seems odd?"

It sounds like a fish. Even after finding out what they are, I have still not seen them in a shop.

LadyCordeliaFitzgerald · 14/03/2022 15:39

@TatianaBis that’s fascinating - I love etymology.

@MattDillonsEyebrows I didn’t realise the sprayer arms could be detached and cleaned either.

I only recently discovered that you can delay start dishwasher/washing machine which has been a game changer

hobbledyhoy · 14/03/2022 15:51

@mumsmerion
This is absolutely revelatory - how did I not know this about laptops???

FlemishHorse · 14/03/2022 15:54

In the USA, Reno, Nevada is further west than Los Angeles, California.

Deadringer · 14/03/2022 15:57

I learned the 'lefty loosey righty tighty' from Phil on Modern Family, it's been very useful.

nearlyspringyay · 14/03/2022 15:59

@Magik01

If you turn the little pull tab off an olive oil bottle and turn it around and push it half way it, it acts like a stopper that only realises the amount of oil you actually need!
This could be life changing!

Not me but my son learnt the nice glass he got for his bday wasnt plastic but glass after trying to squish it and cutting his hands blood everywhere and me saying many times its glass had to prove his point.
